  • First Solo Camping Trip (and first EVER RUclips video!)
    To try out all of my brand new gear and prep myself for the 100+ mile PCT section hike I am doing in August 2016, I decided to do a solo hike and camping trip.
    Needless to say, the early June weather in Oregon didn't play along, and I wasn't equipped with some gear items that could have been useful. I have also not backpacked in about 12 years, nor have I ever solo camped.
    Also, please keep in mind that this is my first ever RUclips video!

    Hey here is a tip ! Never get into a sleeping bag cold, it is made to keep you warm not make you warm.
    Do some jumping jacks, pushups, or go for a jog before and your body will warm up the bag and then it will keep you warm.
    I am from Canadian Rockies no such thing as warm nights here.

      buddy mo You can also put warm/hot water (not boiling water😬) into a Nalgene bottle and throw it inside your sleeping bag before sleep!

    • @HikeOregon
      @HikeOregon  7 лет назад +1

      Definitely a great idea! I didn't have a Nalgene bottle with me on this trip unfortunately :(.

    • @walatalalaw
      @walatalalaw 6 лет назад +1

      It also works with plastic bottles or basically any watertight container. I used this tip to sleep in freezing temps in Norway and in central Asia. If you use a plastic bottle you can fill it with boiling water, but be careful not to use it for drinking afterwards because the heat will make the plastic leak chemicals into the water. Also don't burn yourself! And if you sleep with the bottle between your legs it heats the blood in your femoral arteries and distributes the warmth throughout your body very efficiently!
      Splitting wood with a knife is a great way to get dry wood for a fire in any conditions.
      Also, make a big pile of leaves or pine needles and set your tent over it for extra insulation at night!

    • @theslowwalker
      @theslowwalker 6 лет назад

      If you freezer bag cook you can use your sleeping bag as a cozy. Also, certain foods require your body to burn more energy than others to digest, so eating these is almost like doing verylight exercises while you sleep.

    another piece of gear that doesnt weigh much is a small wood fire box, super useful and handy to have along with the more common propane stoves out there just as a back up, they fold down to nothing and dont take any special fuels except whats around you

  • @kwacked1
    @kwacked1 6 лет назад +2

    The best news was you had a short hike back to your car on your first solo overnighter, and made a wise decision. The following tips are for everyone who may be new to this
    When setting up camp, right away try finding as much “dry” wood as possible, more than what you might use if conditions really are dry. Look under logs, dig down into debris piles, etc. It may take an hour. The physical effort will also generate some heat. Used to do this all the time when friends and I would spend a week in the Jefferson Wilderness.
    Nowadays I never do a solo day hike without 4 layers, 2 hats, mittens, and a good headlamp. The only thing I add in cold weather is a good coat and a muffler.
    And for goodness sake, don’t stand in the wind when it’s that cold! Find a spot back in the trees. 😉

    Beautiful scenery, with the lake reflecting the clouds and trees! However, IMO, you absolutely made the correct decision to "bug" out of there! Hypothermia is a reality and what's the purpose of enjoying the outdoors laying awake all night freezing and next to a "mosquito nursery" Yes! Time to leave! Excellent video with a beautiful landscape. That was a win.

    I loved the quite commentary. Very suitable for the situation. A small fire kit would not be a lot of weight and a fire would keep you feeling safe at night and the smoke would keep the bugs away. Great trip and thank you for posting.🙂

    Great video! My wife and I hiked in there and just beyond it looking for elk a few years back in October. No snow like you ran into though. Beautiful place. We had lunch just beyond your tent site and had a camp robber bird fly up and sit on my hand! It had probably been fed by humans all summer down at the Waldo Lake campgrounds! Anyway, thank you for reminding me of a very nice place. We are in our 60’s now and don’t hike very far but still enjoy it and LOVE your videos and your spirit of exploration!

      +Hike Oregon. Ha ha. I can believe that. Did you notice you were whispering when you put the video together? I know that first solo trip can be a little scary too, but eventually you will like them as much as going with friends. If you can, bring a dog. Dogs are excellent camping companions and even the darkness isn't as scary if you have a canine friend with you. Most animals like bears, raccoons, skunk, deer will avoid camps with a dog, however, dogs can sometimes attract wolves and coyotes.

    Great video, very informative, leaving the gloves and hat behind it is something you will never do again I am guessing and every one can learn from this especially those who are starting to go out there. Hard thing to do to deciding go out with minimal gear to go light in weight; I am trying to buy all needed gears as light as they can be so in trips I do not leave behind nothing that could play a role in me being protected from the elements especially in cold weather; shells are important and the quality chosen and how light they are is crucial. Good choice to head back and call it if you started to shiver out there. Be safe, happy trails!

    Next time you can't find tender to start a fire try processing the firewood. You were surrounded by pine trees. Just find a decent size dead branch split it and make a feather stick. the outside of the branch will most likely be wet but the inside should be dry. You can make the shavings as small and plentiful as you would like. Rain some sparks over it and you are good to go. Be sure to make some smaller kindling out of the middle of those branches also. Along with building for your fire you will be warming yourself up. Good film hopefully your trail and errors will help others learn also.

    Thanks for the video and giving me a bunch of belly hurtin' laughs. LOVED the beginning of the video as your eyeballs looked about big as golf balls when you said "it's snowing"!........like the apocalypse ice age was starting and you're out in the middle of nowhere. The other thing was your VERY low voice...kind of like you expected to hear a noise behind you and see some guy in a hockey mask while carrying a machete or chain saw.....or a REALLY BIG grizzly bear!As to making mistakes, we've ALL been there, done that. The petroleum jelly/cotton balls is a good one, though what I've done (learned from RUclips) was to melt the petroleum jelly in a jar which is in a pan of water. Once it's liquid, soak the cotton balls in the jelly and let dry on aluminum foil. I've got a bunch of 'em in ziplock bags that actually has a zipper instead of the kind you press to seal. Also got a bunch of them in various sized empty vitamin bottles along with special matches. These are about 4"long and half of it is the fire part. They'll stay lit for about 3 minutes no matter how hard it's raining.Back in 77-79, was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (Anchorage) and did a lot of camping/fishing on my days off. This was WAY before the internet and of course, ferro rods, soaked cotton balls and other ideas weren't really known. It was raining that day, slipped and feel into the water which was COLD. Within a couple of minutes, I started shaking/shivering and knew what that meant. Found a tree which had fallen, scrapped some bark to make tender along with really small sticks. Then used my magnesium bar for shavings on top of them, then used the striker on the bar. Wonder what kind of sleeping bag you had with you and now have. Been there, done that as a truck driver. Water pump went out on me about 20-25 miles north of Yucca Mountain travel plaza which is about 40-50 miles north of Las Vegas. Found myself stuck there from Christmas Eve afternoon until almost noon the day after Christmas because there was no cell phone coverage.....Area 51 ya know. The 2 Coleman bags I had weren't worth bleep. Wind picked up and it got cold. Closed both sets of drapes in truck, lit a couple of candles which were on a paper plate to help "warm up" the inside a bit. Saw my breath the entire time. Since then, bought what's called the MSS, multipurpose sleep system which is what the military uses and good for (depending on who you believe) -10 or -40. Will check out your other videos to find out if you've been chopped up by a machete, ripped apart by a chainsaw or maybe you'll have a last selfie while being eaten by a grizzly bear !-)

    • @HikeOregon
      @HikeOregon  7 лет назад

      Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed! I still have the same sleeping bag. It's the REI Lyra synthetic material rated for 24 degrees. The problem with Oregon is that when it is damp like that, even 32 degrees feels like 20. And because I had been wet and cold all day, and had no hat, there was no way I was going to warm up in the sleeping bag even though it is plenty warm. Since this episode, I now always carry "fat wood" which is wood infused with pitch so that I can easily start a fire if I needed to. But I also now know how to use all my gear, I got a better tent, and I have all my clothing dialed in for backpacking.

    starting fires in the cold or wet conditions can be a pain, i would sugest carrying something like few small peat moss log starters ( dont set fire to the entire log but cut it in to squares so they last longer and can get multiple attempts per log) and maybe a sterno can to help keep warm inside the tent if absolutly needed and get something to eat if needed, i know its not the best out there but its something till you get more antiquated to gathering materials in wet conditions. hiking in a desert can be very similar except for the wet but materials to make a fire can be just as sparce

      I think people will like it as long as you are sincere. You look vulnerable in this video (and another one I just watched with a ghost dog). That's touching, it reminded me of some of my experiences when I was in my sleeping bag saying to myself "what I can't see doesn't exist" so I could sleep without caring about things happening around me. I think what makes it good is that people can relate to your experience and your raw emotions.

      @HikeOregon  8 лет назад

      +Tim Barton it wasn't a long trail at all. I was like a mile from the road. Just wanted to try out my new gear. Done lots of camping from an early age one but was always with my dad who took care
      Of logistics. I stopped backpacking when I was a teenager and hadn't done it in 10 years. Backpacked for 17 nights later that season and it turned out great!

    Want to thank you for a very funny video and being a poster child for what NOT to do when solo camping. Did you think to check for current/future weather conditions BEFORE you left? I had the feeling you asked some people about what gear to take on a camping trip because you THOUGHT there might be room in your tent for your pack so it would be out of the rain. Did you ever set up your tent at home before leaving and finding out ahead of time how much room you'd have once your sleeping bag was in it? Wished you had filmed your fire starting attempt(s). Did you have an axe, hatchet or folding wood saw? Or did you just pick up various limbs and break them to a useable size?I spent a couple of years in Alaska and a lot of times, everything was soaked/very damp. A petroleum soaked cotton ball pulled apart, then lit, ALWAYS got me a fire going. With a small hatchet, you could of split your wood to expose the dry part of it. Never did say if you had a hot meal before going to bed. As to wearing hat & carrying gloves, I always wear a cowboy type hat because it gives me more protection against the sun/weather. I don't worry about mosquitos in Nevada, but with a hat, get mosquito netting that you could wear with your hat. As to the gloves, they'll help in not only keeping my hands clean while picking up wood, rocks, etc. but from cuts/scrapes. I liked how thru out the entire video, you kept your voice really low and it seemed your eyes kept darting back & forth/around like you expected a lion, tiger or bear (oh my!) to come hungrily charging out of the woods in search of a quick meal, meaning you. If all of this sounds like I'm verbally beating you up, the answer is NO. You learn from your mistakes and of course, you never had to post this video. You could of just packed everything up, got back in your car and headed home. But you didn't. How far did you walk from your car to your campsite? More than once I thought I had a good idea, but practiced/tried it out BEFORE going on a trip....saved me more than once from failing out in the middle of no where. As to my outdoor cooking disasters in my back yard, Grizzly The Fierce Tail Wagger had NO problem gobbling them up.Thing is, when I go camping, I ALWAYS think worse case scenario, first being weather. What would you have done if you couldn't just pack up and head back to your car for at least a day or two? Check RUclips for camping/bushcraft videos. There's a lot of people have tried & failed at things which gives you (and me) the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. There's a lady named armed rogue who just went on her 1st solo camping trip and she learned a few things. This is the first video of yours I've watched and will check out the others to see how things are going for you on your camping trips. I try to watch as many women doing camping trips/doing bushcraft things because you ladies think differently and of course, usually can't carry the amount of gear a man can so you have do to more with less.Thanks again for your video and sharing your experience.

      Yes the weather said 40% chance of rain for a few hours during the day. It didn't say anything about snow. I did not have a saw or hatchet with me, because it is not something that I was going to carry on the PCT. I did set up my tent prior to going but didn't have my backpack yet at that time so wasn't sure it was going to fit. And yes, I was looking around all scared because there are large bear in this particular area of Oregon, and we have lots of large cougar as well. I was about a mile from my car because I had previously hiked the other way a few miles on the PCT and then headed back to this lake.

    This isn't for you because I think you learned your lesson. But for other first time campers.....never set your tent up for the first time when you go camping..always set it up at home to check for rips or missing parts..it happens. And please please please...practice your camping skills at home.especially if you plan on solo camping. You really shouldn't solo camp the first time alone....should try to go with an experienced camper first at least once.
    I'm so glad you made it somewhat safely..I hope you will always be so lucky. Still a nice looking video though.

    Brave and a good thing to hopefully scratch off that bucket list. However..yes there are mostly fellow hikers/nature lovers out there but every once in a while you might just bump into this complete lunatic. I am a pretty big guy, always armed with knife. I live to fight another day every time I am out there because I am an avid fan of avoiding open paths/campsites. Paranoia? Hell yeah. Good thing? Yup. Thank you for sharing your experience of a beautiful outdoor place. I want to say this in the nicest of ways as you can tell that you are a very sweet girl and a good person. I am a experienced outdoors person and was in the military as well ass a long family legacy of law enforcement within the family. I want to say this please please be careful going solo out in remote places. There some not so nice people in this world and I hate to something happen to such a nice girl. Be sure you let people know of your departure times and routes and lodging sites both with family and park officials etc. last thing I want to see is a body recovery of such a nice person as yourself. Bring a dog of you can "they are early warning systems and often sense bad people or things" at least bring a decent knife and practice with it and get over the fact you actually would need to use it if you had to. I am happy to see you to have the courage to go solo but please be careful. I believe society would benefit from having someone like you around. Cheers and nice REI tent I have he version just before that one. You have pretty eyes not trying to flirt just paying you complement as I am tad older then you. Leave no trace and have fun.

      Thank you so much for the nice comments and the concern. I do bring bear spray with me, mainly so that I could use it on someone if I had to. I understand the dangers, and honestly it more often than not does scare me quite a bit. I am definitely more afraid of the people out there than the animals. I make sure not to go solo hiking near any towns where people tend to partake in sketchy behavior in the woods. And I only tend to hike alone on popular trails where people are driving hours to go and recreate. I very much appreciate your concern :)

Stay safe and keep the videos coming they are really pretty good I have to say. Its also sort of cool that we get to see the perspective from a girl doing this and what your view and experiences are as not to many girls are as adventurous about the outdoors as others. So cheers and keep up the good work. Happy Trails. :)

    Been catching up on your videos and I hope your fire starting skills have improved, if not 3 excellent channels demonstrating wet weather fire starting techniques; "Girl in the Woods," "Reallybigmonkey," and "Russia Survival," all very authentic folks that actually live in the woods. Anywho, happy trails...

      I rarely camp in situations like this one, however I now always carry a piece of 'fat wood' with me just in case I am in a situation where I have to make a fire. In the fall, winter and spring in Oregon everything is ALWAYS wet so unless you're carrying something to start the fire with, you're not going to have much luck. And from July through September we are not allowed to have fires here in Oregon.

    Oh yes, dealing with solitude. I believe I understand. Shortly, I started long ago visiting the mountains with hikers mostly then I noticed all kinds of footprints in the snow. After that no summits were of my interest. I only used to take a dog with me, several times.
    Still I often visit those high mountain wilderness and never feel myself alone.
    I might say that I feel solitude among the people that do not understand the nature.

Kudos for getting OUT there and trying things on for "size" :) You might want to check out BushcraftUSA.com forums. I'm going to post a review on it this week! :) The main thing that was a deal breaker for me was the vestibule was WAY too small for a backpacking backpack. So if it is raining, I had to put the pack in the tent and then there just wasn't enough room. And the materials are a lot more flimsy and cheaper than other tents on the market, but that also makes them more expensive.
