Caveat: You are building a cabin. Flange is no big deal. Having said that, your viewers and you may (or may not) be interested to know what the actual function of the flange is. "paper-backed" fiberglass serves two purposes. The fiberglass itself, which gives the r value to the space into which it is installed, and the paper, which is actually two layers of paper with a layer of tar or plastic cement sandwiched in between, which acts as a vapor barrier. In calculating heat gain/heat loss BTU requirements for structures, the vapor barrier, if it is present and CONTINUOUS accounts for 15% of preventing your gain or loss. In a typical residence, this can be quite significant when figuring the long-range cost of heating and cooling your home. For this reason, the National Environmental Systems Contractors Association has for decades recommended a SOLID, CONTINUOUS vapor barrier on the interior side of all walls and ceilings. Proper insulation installations is a MUST under this circumstance to prevent mold/mildew situations. Now back to the flange. The flange is the continuation of the vapor barrier across the face of the structural surface (stud or ceiling joist/rafter). The surface area of an 8' 2X4 stud is roughly one square foot. So you can see that when looking at an entire house, this can add up fast, and create the need for the next size furnace and air conditioner. That is why NESCA advises applying the flange to the surface of the stud/ceiling joist, not the side. This stops infiltration of outside air, and continues the surface area of the vapor barrier. And yes, I know drywall hangers don't like it, but my future energy bills are more important to me than the convenience of the drywall hangers. All due respect, of course. Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel. The cabin is looking great, welcoming, and comfortable.
This is actually very good information. Even in a dry climate, installing a continuous vapor barrier on the inside of the roof insulation will prevent mold and mildew caused by humid indoor air from condensing on the bottom side of the roof decking, which can cause MAJOR problems. Ask me how I know.

I generally don't read description unless I am told in the video that it contains additional info or greater detail, etc. That being said, I do from time to time just give them a cursory check to see that I'm not missing some salient or obscure fact that would might be missed otherwise. Great videos and love your train of thought on getting things built and done within its intended purpose.
Great question. I would have to say about 50 % of the time I will skim through the details and if products are listed I will check them if I have a need for them. Sometimes I might just check to see if they are maybe better than something I already own. Hope that helps? Also interesting how you mention about the chimney effect of the insulation, I was not aware of that. So another great video, good job. I must of got a little too close when your were cutting those short pieces think I got some insulation in my eye, So I have to go clean up before getting on to your next project. Be back shortly.

Yeah, I often read the description. I'm the wrong guy to ask though. I also watch most RUclips videos from start to finish, pay taxes willingly as part of the greater good, and read instructions before using new tools. I'm just not normal. Hopefully the affiliate links help you. I've considered adding easter eggs to my descriptions to encourage people to read them. I don't typically read descriptions unless the video specifically mentions (via text or audio) that additional information (that I might be interested in) is included in the description. So, it might be to your advantage to throw in a subtitle at some point in all your future videos mentioning the product links in the video description. Enjoying the build! Patrick, I am really enjoying this series. But watching you today has made up my mind. If (when?) I build my own little cabin, I am DEFINITELY getting some scaffolding. Yes, it costs money. But I figure I can sell it afterward and make back at least half of what I spend. I'm quickly sliding into my late 50's, and not really the athletic sort. So there is no way in tarnation I'm gonna be climbing around in the rafters like you did in this video. 😂😂😂 As for reading the text of the description, I normally only do it if there is something mentioned in the video that makes me want to look there (such as links or references and the like).

Hi. Nothing is worse than insulation. I used Rockwool on the cabin I am building. It is still itchy. I read description when I am interested in a product you are using, especially something new or different for me. Insulation probably not, solar I definitely would as an example. Stay warm!

I watch every video. Sometimes, twice if I have a brain dead moment. My dad's favorite power tool was the router. I never did buy one because they cost more than a over sized drill bit. I didn't make fancy furniture either. It's amazing what you can build out of sawhorse braces. Sawhorse chairs and sawhorse plant hangers. Sawhorse drying racks for decorative molding. I always enjoy watching your videos. Most of the time I learn something which is a bonus! I personally would have stapled the flange to the face of the rafters to make a continuous vapour barrier, but like you said, it's just a cabin and will not always be heated. One of my reasons would be that I don't want to create "runways" for rodents and bugs to explore. As for the question, I probably only read about 50% of the video descriptions. I didn't get my gold star, but I was able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while watching! See you next time!
Not unless I have a question. I'm subscribed and I hit the like everytime. I hit the like button of every video I watch now before the video even starts. Good or bad people put a lot of work into making videos the least I can do is hit the like button. I subscribe if I like the channel.
I really enjoy your videos. The cabin is looking great! I can't wait till you insulate the walls! I read descriptions, but not all the time. If I want to know more, or if I want to find out if the creator is going to tell me what he's using for a particular thing, or if the video title is unclear about the video topic. I read less descriptions for creators like yourself that I subscribe to though. I might look at one out of five or six description for those, where I might read one out of two or three for people I don't (because I don't "know" them well enough).
Patrick, I actually have always loved installing the insulation. 3 factors 1) The clean look of hiding all the wiring/plumbing/general eyesores. 2) The immediate sound dampening. 3) The warmth. 3 Gut n remodels later, I love the insulation part. Thx for sharing.

This is way more important in a home but a cabin that stays empty most of the time will have plenty of opportunity to dry. It’ll be fine.

Drywall installers want to be able to glue directly to the studs…helps eliminate nail pops

Hi. Nothing is worse than insulation. I used Rockwool on the cabin I am building. It is still itchy. I read description when I am interested in a product you are using, especially something new or different for me. Insulation probably not, solar I definitely would as an example. Stay warm!

I watch every video. Sometimes, twice if I have a brain dead moment. My dad's favorite power tool was the router. I never did buy one because they cost more than a over sized drill bit. I didn't make fancy furniture either. It's amazing what you can build out of sawhorse braces. Sawhorse chairs and sawhorse plant hangers. Sawhorse drying racks for decorative molding. I personally would have stapled the flange to the face of the rafters to make a continuous vapour barrier, but like you said, it's just a cabin and will not always be heated. One of my reasons would be that I don't want to create "runways" for rodents and bugs to explore.
As for the question, I probably only read about 50% of the video descriptions.

I read descriptions, but not all the time. If I want to know more, or if I want to find out if the creator is going to tell me what he's using for a particular thing, or if the video title is unclear about the video topic. I read less descriptions for creators like yourself that I subscribe to though. I might look at one out of five or six description for those, where I might read one out of two or three for people I don't (because I don't "know" them well enough).

Patrick, I actually have always loved installing the insulation. 3 factors 1) The clean look of hiding all the wiring/plumbing/general eyesores. 2) The immediate sound dampening. 3) The warmth. 3 Gut n remodels later, I love the insulation part. Thx for sharing.
