Caveat: You are building a cabin. Flange is no big deal. Having said that, your viewers and you may (or may not) be interested to know what the actual function of the flange is. "paper-backed" fiberglass serves two purposes. The fiberglass itself, which gives the r value to the space into which it is installed, and the paper, which is actually two layers of paper with a layer of tar or plastic cement sandwiched in between, which acts as a vapor barrier. In calculating heat gain/heat loss BTU requirements for structures, the vapor barrier, if it is present and CONTINUOUS accounts for 15% of preventing your gain or loss. In a typical residence, this can be quite significant when figuring the long-range cost of heating and cooling your home. For this reason, the National Environmental Systems Contractors Association has for decades recommended a SOLID, CONTINUOUS vapor barrier on the interior side of all walls and ceilings. Proper insulation installations is a MUST under this circumstance to prevent mold/mildew situations. Now back to the flange. The flange is the continuation of the vapor barrier across the face of the structural surface (stud or ceiling joist/rafter). The surface area of an 8' 2X4 stud is roughly one square foot. So you can see that when looking at an entire house, this can add up fast, and create the need for the next size furnace and air conditioner. That is why NESCA advises applying the flange to the surface of the stud/ceiling joist, not the side. This stops infiltration of outside air, and continues the surface area of the vapor barrier. And yes, I know drywall hangers don't like it, but my future energy bills are more important to me than the convenience of the drywall hangers. All due respect, of course. Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel. The cabin is looking great, welcoming, and comfortable.
This is actually very good information. Even in a dry climate, installing a continuous vapor barrier on the inside of the roof insulation will prevent mold and mildew caused by humid indoor air from condensing on the bottom side of the roof decking, which can cause MAJOR problems. Ask me how I know.
Good stuff! That’s what I meant to say! Yeah the vapor barrier is one facet I’ll touch on in the wall insulation video (yay!). I’m confident the ‘vapor barriers’ in place now will suffice. I definitely believe it’s an overall better R value with the flanges on the face, too. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Boy, am I glad to have shown up on the job site today! My very favorite thing to do! …NOT… but I’ll be glad to help you out Patrick. The more the merrier, it will go faster!! It looks good! Till next week my friend. Take care of yourself Patrick.
I am glad that you are numbering your videos now. I find it useful when watching a series so I know which order to watch. Just as a suggestion, perhaps go back and add a number to each video, from the Cabin series, so new viewers can follow along. The indexing and organization of the videos is helpful IMO.
I do read your description notes. Now, I am never going to buy a nailer but I really do appreciate the musical attributions. The cabin in looking good!
As far your description information, yes i almost always read the description. I definitely love when they are number episodes, i make sure i stay in order. And if i want more knfo, i read more of the details. Building a little cabin like this is definitely a dream of mine, one day
I don't care what anyone says, putting in insulation is my favorite video to watch. Well, next to watching paint drying videos. Let me know when that episode comes up. Just kidding. Ah, the demands of a RUclips channel. I must ask, though, given the name of your channel...where are the moose?
Yes I read them. I have seen every video you have put out. I love them all. I grew up with a carpenter father taking me to job sites regularly. I enjoy watching your work and reminiscing about helping my dad out.
Another great video. Thanks for explaining the things you don't do but might do in other situations like the venting. Saves me from asking about it! Lol.
Hey, we love your channel! and we just realized we weren't subscribbed 😅 We are now! Love the work and your attitude. We even gave ya a shout-out in our last video lol But to answer your question, we look in the description when we have questions about a tool, in case its there, instead of asking. Thanks for your videos they are very entertaining.
I hear you on insulation not being your cup of tea! I was almost looking forward to ads! 😂 Don’t worry I’ll be back next week! Friday night is a glass of wine and your videos! It’s now a ritual. I rarely read the video description, but since posting links to tools and what not will help you, I’ll have a look at it from now on. By the way your channel is the only one I watch the full ads, unless it’s three minutes long. 😅 But you get it!
Nice editing near the end with the little trim pieces. I don't pay attention to the title headings. I'm a subscriber so I watch because of you. Heck you made insulation fun and interesting and I hate insulation. That's why I watch.
It's getting closer and closer to the finishing touches! 👍 Excellent, entertaining video, as always! Can't wait to see what is planned for ceiling wood..
I generally don't read description unless I am told in the video that it contains additional info or greater detail, etc. That being said, I do from time to time just give them a cursory check to see that I'm not missing some salient or obscure fact that would might be missed otherwise. Great videos and love your train of thought on getting things built and done within its intended purpose.
Great question. I would have to say about 50 % of the time I will skim through the details and if products are listed I will check them if I have a need for them. Sometimes I might just check to see if they are maybe better than something I already own. Hope that helps? Also interesting how you mention about the chimney effect of the insulation, I was not aware of that. So another great video, good job. I must of got a little too close when your were cutting those short pieces think I got some insulation in my eye, So I have to go clean up before getting on to your next project. Be back shortly.
I think now that you’ve hit 20,000 subscribers, we need a name. I think those of us that follow the channel should be known as Moose Heads. PS - I almost never read the descriptions on videos. I do think having the product links there is great, but practically speaking, I’m not sure how much I’ll use it.
Sometimes I read the description, especially when I'm looking for info on the music in the videos. If it is a video series I run into it is nice to find out which number of video it is.
I really appreciate that. SD (assuming the state) is one of my favorites. Fell in love with the Black Hills on a family road trip when I was 10, and was the reason I had to live in the mountains.
@LifeontheMoose Pstrick, that style of background music is very smooth, it's is what I always call "focus music," and I would be interested to know where I can buy that download 😇. I was also wondering if you're in the Okanogan highlands? Reminds me of NE Washington state area as I'm looking to find a piece of land to test out some self-sufficient construction and lifestyle ideas, as I am returning from EU soon and trying to find a perfect place to build a homestead. Used to live in Gig Harbor but wanted high elevations for tinkering projects.
Love watching I enjoy see you videos I don’t know anything about building anything but I see you do love this little cabin you doing a great job (I think 😅) jut kidding until your next video stay safe stay strong and god bless🙏❤️✌🏼
Yeah, I often read the description. I'm the wrong guy to ask though. I also watch most RUclips videos from start to finish, pay taxes willingly as part of the greater good, and read instructions before using new tools. I'm just not normal. Hopefully the affiliate links help you. I've considered adding easter eggs to my descriptions to encourage people to read them. At very least, they help the RUclips machine figure out how to promote your videos. Thanks for the great content! Fun project.
I often read the description in the hopes of getting details I might have missed while watching the video. I especially appreciate it when resource content is provided.
I don't typically read descriptions unless the video specifically mentions (via text or audio) that additional information (that I might be interested in) is included in the description. So, it might be to your advantage to throw in a subtitle at some point in all your future videos mentioning the product links in the video description. Enjoying the build! It's going much faster than my cabin build (2 years and counting to date)!
In Switzerland we have a saying: 'Work is beautyfull, i could watch it for houres' This channel is exactly that😁 I especialy like the calm music you lay over it.. a Spotify Playlist with all the tracks would be nice💁♂️
Patrick, I am really enjoying this series. But watching you today has made up my mind. If (when?) I build my own little cabin, I am DEFINITELY getting some scaffolding. Yes, it costs money. But I figure I can sell it afterward and make back at least half of what I spend. I'm quickly sliding into my late 50's, and not really the athletic sort. So there is no way in tarnation I'm gonna be climbing around in the rafters like you did in this video. 😂😂😂 As for reading the text of the description, I normally only do it if there is something mentioned in the video that makes me want to look there (such as links or references and the like).
If the ground was just a tad more level or even, I may have gone that route. Much safer for sure. I am very careful when I monkey around…for the record! Thank you for watching. 🙏
Hi. Nothing is worse than insulation. I used Rockwool on the cabin I am building. It is still itchy. I read description when I am interested in a product you are using, especially something new or different for me. Insulation probably not, solar I definitely would as an example. Stay warm!
Believe it or not, now my eyes itch! Did you say we deserve a gold star or a cold star? Yes I do read the titles and your descriptions. While you are working, I enjoy looking beyond you and at different aspects of your build and remembering what you went through to get to where you are now. Thanks again and God bless.
I watch every video. Sometimes, twice if I have a brain dead moment. My dad's favorite power tool was the router. I never did buy one because they cost more than a over sized drill bit. I didn't make fancy furniture either. It's amazing what you can build out of sawhorse braces. Sawhorse chairs and sawhorse plant hangers. Sawhorse drying racks for decorative molding. Sawhorse picnic tables. Anyway, I love the show. Take care. Vaughn
I always enjoy watching your videos. Most of the time I learn something which is a bonus! I personally would have stapled the flange to the face of the rafters to make a continuous vapour barrier, but like you said, it's just a cabin and will not always be heated. One of my reasons would be that I don't want to create "runways" for rodents and bugs to explore. As for the question, I probably only read about 50% of the video descriptions. I didn't get my gold star, but I was able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while watching! See you next time!
Not unless I have a question. I'm subscribed and I hit the like everytime. I hit the like button of every video I watch now before the video even starts. Good or bad people put a lot of work into making videos the least I can do is hit the like button. I subscribe if I like the channel.
I really enjoy your videos. The cabin is looking great! I can't wait till you insulate the walls! I read descriptions, but not all the time. If I want to know more, or if I want to find out if the creator is going to tell me what he's using for a particular thing, or if the video title is unclear about the video topic. I read less descriptions for creators like yourself that I subscribe to though. I might look at one out of five or six description for those, where I might read one out of two or three for people I don't (because I don't "know" them well enough).
Patrick, I actually have always loved installing the insulation. 3 factors 1) The clean look of hiding all the wiring/plumbing/general eyesores. 2) The immediate sound dampening. 3) The warmth. 3 Gut n remodels later, I love the insulation part. Thx for sharing.
I do read the description in DIY videos for the very same reason you mentioned. Many youtubers put links to tools or materials they use in video and it is informative, thank you.

This is way more important in a home but a cabin that stays empty most of the time will have plenty of opportunity to dry. It’ll be fine.
Good stuff! That’s what I meant to say! Yeah the vapor barrier is one facet I’ll touch on in the wall insulation video (yay!). I’m confident the ‘vapor barriers’ in place now will suffice. I definitely believe it’s an overall better R value with the flanges on the face, too.

Ha I’m sure! Nice to see you again. Stay safe up on that cliff!

I don't really think about it myself, I see that a new video is uploaded and I grab a cup of coffee and click and enjoy.
Ah that sounds great to me! 🙏
Love your sense of humor, and your style. Let me know if you ever find volunteers to help you with insulation and send them my way.

At makes sense! And I’m sure you are giddy with anticipation of wall insulation! 🙏
We do not read the description only the titles; however, we do click on links sometimes to check things
Thank you!
Hey cool! Definitely helps tidy things up, not to mention the warmth and quiet.
I do read the description in DIY videos for the very same reason you mentioned. Many youtubers put links to tools or materials they use in video and it is informative, thank you.
Ah the thanks goes to you!
I read when I’m looking for something you mention on the video, if I’m interested in it
Thank you!
