Hello Rachel I am someone who never has any WIP 's I usally batch cut out a few patterns at a time When I buy fabric I usally have a pattern in mind Sometimes I spend a day or two cutting out Like if fleece comes on sale I know how much to buy for hoodies or shirts etc I then sew them up They never get set aside and forgotten. I like that I can go to the sewing room and do a project its ready to go I do have a stash but it is not huge But as I said I buy fabric with let say a dress in mind so I purchase a amount that would make me a dress My sewing friend says that I am too organized and I must have good self control lol But that's me I buy and sew as I go You are such a speedy sewist and I can definitely see that for you cutting and sewing as you go Love your videos I wish that I could shop your stash lol Take care Happy sewing 👗 ✂️ 🪡 🧵
Had a boxful of mainly alterations and repairs, languishing for quite a few months. Depressing. Figured I didn’t need any of it and threw the lot out (or gave it to the charity shop). Felt heaps better!
I now cut out and sew, but I have wips from way back. Decided this year to make one new outfit and then sew a wip. That seems to be working. So do the 3 you want first, then just slip the others in between other new projects. Love all the fabric. Gwen
Oh Rachel, how funny I did exactly he same as you , in that I copied Andrea in the Pink Door, I can’t remember how long agoI bought the Spring Dress pattern but to date have just looked at it ! I think I got fed up doing gathering on other garments. So now I’m going to give it a go but may well leave off the bottom tier. I look forward to seeing yours , thanks for the inspiration .🥰
I am like you and don’t batch cut. I am very methodical and have to cut, add markings and sew whilst it is all fresh in my head. Too many patterns in my head at a time freaks me out as do lots of pattern pieces attached to fabric all getting squished 😅. The red blouse pattern with the keyhole is lovely. Why not take it to a sewing social so someone can help with the keyhole sizing? Your Marnie will look fabulous despite thread colour- it is not noticeable. Good Luck WIP sewing- totally agree with your choices. 😊 Lynne
Hi Rachel. I tend to do one project at once and see it through to the end, so don't really have any WIPs. I did find a project that I'd abandoned the other day, which should have been a sheath style dress in stretchy fabric, but I need to do a sway back adjustment as there was excess fabric. Bit late to do that when you've cut the fabric (it wasn't expensive fabric). Anyway I'd chopped the top off so it resembled a crop top, then found the lower half of the dress and managed to cobble something together to make a top which I can wear in the house/for doing yoga in. Win, win.
Thanks for this little tour Rachel. Like you, I cut and sew and don't typically have WIPS. However I do seem to have a few. I have a wedding coming up (faster than I realized) so i had to put some things aside and jump on a rather complicated sew. I have a couple projects that stalled when my size changed and I am hoping to get back at them soon. Will need to do a WIP cleanup in November! Your Marnie and Archer will be great to have finished.
I have a lot of WIPS because I do what you used to do, cutting out a few at once. However, as I have changed sizes I now have to recut them in smaller sizes before I can do them. I must admit I probably have about 10. I am going to get them done though, but have to do the winter ones first.
I used to have no WIPS but seem to have amassed quite a few in the last few years from also batch cutting and weight changes. I love your Marnie blouse - definitely one to finish
I have made the Bloomfield dress! It’s my favorite dress. I love it and get complimented on it over and over. (I bought it after you said you had bought it years back!❤)
I find this whole topic fascinating as I need lots of different projects because if I get bored or stuck I can keep happy by not dwelling too long on the project but move on and then revisit. I commit to projects in my Planning book so I will do them. I probably have more project bags with pattern and uncut fabric in than actual WIP. I do need some discipline though so for example each time I sew I allocate 1 hour to the WIP . then when it's finished I can either love it or get rid of it!! I have only 2 WIP but have about 12 planned projects with fabric notions and pattern in bag. I think you are right to do your Grainline Archer as it seems most important and desirable as you describe it. I'm torn with your Marni. Would you feel better if you did change the bodice? What aboutcutting a new bodice maybe even no pintucks then you won't always look at it and think Mistake which as you said is probably the white thread. The fabric is lovely so do make it. Just make it so you will love it. I've recut bodices and replaced in order to sort out a problem and it was very satisfying. Above all - have fun😎❤
I think you’re right with the WIPs you plan to finish & hope you have an amazing holiday in Barbados. I have two dresses cut out, which will have to wait until the spring. I came down to Surrey yesterday to house/dog sitting for son & his partner who have gone to Turkey for two weeks. I brought sewing machine with me & intend to make Tilly pjs + trousers & a blouse (all cut out). That’s the aim & hopefully cut out a Jodie Jumper if I finish the other things. 😊
I’m in the middle of batch cutting currently…never done it before so will see! Btw I have the spring dress pattern, the finished measurements on my copy are for the bust, waist and length rather than hips. Hope that helps!
Hi Rachael, loved the video and all your WIPs. Lovely projects. When you mention the Archer pattern you say that the fabric isn’t the brushed cotton that were going to use. Did you have some brushed cotton and where did you buy it please . Any suggestions for brushed cotton suppliers would be great. Thanks
Wonderful! I can see you getting a few of those finished up soon 😁 I've made that Archer shirt a few times, too! That one will be great 😍 I'm with you..... I finally realized about year and a half ago that my limit for cutting out things is 2. !! I rather like cutting out bunches of stuff, but sometimes it took a couple of years to get to the end of them. So my magic number is 2, and I've gotten far more done that way. I am usually prepping a pattern to cut out next. Putting a project on pause for whatever reason is also a problem. It usually gets screwed up when I return to it. In my project book also, they are marked 'in progress' as soon as the fabric is cut 😉 👍
I have three garment sewing WIPs one is a dress toile that doesn't fit me anywhere, a couple of crafty WIPs, one gold work WIP, and three quilting WIPs, plus a rug to complete for my daughter; it's a WIP, but it's not actually mine! I plan to get them all finished over the next few months. I will likely dump the dress toile and complete the camisole and blouse this month for the challenge. I alternate between cutting single garments and batch cutting. I cut out two garments on Monday and one is already sewn up. The other I will complete this week.
I think your plans sound fine! I have too many-what I call:”UFO’s”! 😊. I did that batch cutting, as someone I watched recommended it-but I found that I start feeling overwhelmed and discouraged! So no more of that, unless I start making masks, again! That worked out for those projects, perhaps because I wanted to get as many done as possible in a short period of time ! Thank, Rachael!
I’m afraid I fell into the trap of batch cutting out - hence a few WIPs! But, I’m now cutting, sewing finishing, moving on …….. I just need to get the will to finish the WIPs! One day, I’m not going to beat myself up over them, they’ll happen eventually! 🐾🐾
You mention you didn't know what was in your WIP project bags, it's like a personal 'unboxing' 🙂. Thank-you, brilliant, inspiring, informative and the fabrics you have are delicious! ?Use a colour matched peach fabric pen to colour-in the white stitches on the pintucks in the TATB Marnie blouse ?
I'm a batch cutter out! I recently cut out 4 Bestie bags A flannel shirt A stripe shirt A pair of WBM Cargo shorts 2 WBM easy t shirts A pair of pants and a dress!!!! Mostly Xmas presents 🤣
Maybe you could try colouring the stitching with a similar colour permanent marker so the stitches aren’t as obvious? Just a thought…I like that blouse and you can’t see the stitches from a distance 😊
Could you get a better thread match for the Marnie and stitch over your original stitching? I don’t have Wips on the whole. I think it’s easier when the project hasn’t been started so you don’t have to try and work out where you are. I do have a sew different jumpsuit in a bag because I realised after a K&S show that I’d cut it out far too big as there were no finished measurements, until I enquired on the stall. That put me off completely but leaves me feeling guilty even so. Good luck with your projects. 😊
I'm one of those weird people with no WIPs...not even cut out projects! Like you I've changed a lot over the years. In my twenties I had lots of WIPs - always after the latest pretty. I ended up with unfinished projects languishing for years which stressed me out and which sometimes ended up being thrown away as my size or tastes changed.
You had to remind me didn't you Rachel..........yes I have WHIPS......and have gone to have a look. Only 3 - whew! 😅 I think I can get them. finished. I only cut out 1 thing at a time, because like you, I would get into a complete muddle fuddle. We all work in different ways. If you are a person who makes 10 of everything then maybe batch cutting is a better idea, but I don't want a whole bunch of the same style unless it is a basic of some sort.
Why don’t you take your wip3 (red blouse) to a social and get help with the fitting there. It’s a very pretty fabric btw. Luckily I have only one wip hidden at the back of my stash at the moment. I cut a winter dress out then fell out of love with the fabric but maybe I should dig it out and revisit it. I could possibly love it again 😂❤️
With the Marni blouse I would not unpick the whole front or hand sew. Instead.....Buy the correct shade of thread to use in your sewing machine. Then pin each individual pintuck area and unpick just that one line.Re-stitch using the correct colour thread.BUT. .do not backstitch. Pull the front thread to the back and secure by hand. This way you will have the look you want for the minimum of work. If you leave it as it is it will bother you and you'll end up not wearing it. Continue to sew the sleeve pintucks using the correct colour thread.
I hate having projects cut out and left languishing in a pile-tried it once and messed with the brain lol. I'm very much a cut and sew it up straight away sewist.

I agree with you about batch cutting. They just lose their appeal, it seems. Like you say- lesson learned.

Hello Rachael, can you tell me where you got the zippered plastics that you store your wips in, and the size? Thank you kindly
Hi, I have some of these zipped plastic folders & I got mine from Amazon.😊
I’ve got some in A4 and some in A3, both from Amazon. They are great!
Oh I think Rachel used the A3 size!
Wow - hope you have a lovely holiday. Your plans sound good. Looking forward to seeing some new makes soon. 😊

I’m currently working on a wip…. My daughter’s Girl Scout vest needs all of its patches sewn on… so that’s what I’m doing.
There's probably a badge for that if she did it herself!
@@silverfireUK there isn’t a sewing badge! I’ve looked! It was very disappointing.
Hello Rachel could you let me know the pattern you used for Layas lavender lace sweater please
👍❤️

Think WIP should stand for Wallowing in Procrastination. Describes me better.
