    This is great! But so far in my experience running those 15-20mile long runs especially early in the morning, is like therapy to me. It's a time where I can just space off my mind and think about literally anything, but mostly, important things, a lot of self-realization. Also, every time I go for long runs I'm always thankful I get to run and experience all of this. I never find it boring plus, seeing myself improving each time is a huge reason why I keep going. It's a matter of mindset of being grateful that you are blessed enough that you can enjoy running as a hobby or career and see yourself improve and get healthier and stronger along the way.

      I knew some running friends like you would be sharing how much they love the long run!!! That is awesome. For whatever reason I sort of have this mental block past 15-16...it just feels like a slog after that some days. But focusing on being grateful for what my body can do ALWAYS helps.

      @@runningwithjane Tbh, I too, get that feeling past 15miles. Feels like your hitting a "wall", but that's where we get our mental toughness and we just have to keep banging on that wall. It does feel great after accomplishing it though. You feel like you can take on the world. lol

    Hi Jane. Love all your wonderful advice as always! As a first time Boston qualifier, here's what has worked for me to get through the boring consistent training. 1} Music. I think of my runs as dancing but instead of dancing, I'm running. 20 mile runs are 2.5 hour dance off, lol. 2) See how I feel at the half way point of my run. I always start off slow in my warm up and ease into my run, evaluating how I feel at the halfway point. If I feel great, I let it ride. If I don't, I chill and save it for another day. 3) My mantra. My mantra is Breathe, Relax, Control, Smooth, Rhythm, and Boston Strong. I tell myself these things during my runs and during races. 4) Easy, Medium, Hard, then Rest Day (Supplemental training/Stretching/or complete rest). Both easy and medium days are done at an easy pace (Zone 2 or below). Hard days can either be longer runs, faster runs, or a combination of both. Always a nice break to mentally relax with a rest day after a hard day. 5) Run by Feel and Effort rather than by Time. I check in on my watch every once in a while during the run but focus hard on the Feel and Effort. I evaluate the time after I'm done with my run.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  3 месяца назад +1

      Love all the tips you shared, Peter! Agree that learning to run by feel and effort is so important - those who ran a strong Boston last Monday were probably much better at that because they were able to adjust to effort early on knowing the heat wasn't going to allow them to do the goal pace they had planned for.

    This is why you’re an elite athlete, Jane! You go the extra mile. I am definitely motivated by you. I am putting the pieces together one by one. Watching this I decided my motto of “Olympics 2024!” has kinda a deep meaning: all that work and behind the scenes hours and hours that nobody sees or really cares about for that one event that you hope to succeed at. That is what it takes to rise above the rest. Actual hard work, dedication, prioritizing your goals and knowing that you can achieve anything you put the time and honest effort into. Having you as my Coach has paid off for me tenfold. You’ve taken a lot of the trial and error out of the equation and streamlined things to get the “fastest” results. Thank you, Jane! Olympics2024!!!

    That's what brought me to your channel and get me watching your great contents, you being a BQ. Love the little stories you tell, they're inspiring. This month marks my one year anniversary of running. I've been slowly building up to run a 50 - 70 mile / week for my marathon training from my previous 30 - 40 mile / week of training. I thought it was just me, but man it's so boring running those sessions. Glad you mentioned that in your video. Now I don't have to feel alone, lol.

    Coach Jane, excellent discussion re “hard” truths of marathon training. Your points accurately reflect my experience and I think they represent a much more realistic vision of what it takes to train seriously than what is generally presented in the media. Leading aspiring athletes to think marathon training is easy and nothing but fun may ultimately be counterproductive so thanks for the honesty. Great video, keep up the good work.

      Hi Dee! Yes, there are certain things ingrained in us that we deem to be "normal" because it's what everyone else is doing. The truth is that most people are comfortable with the status quo, and that's totally ok...but when you start looking around at the people who are reaching big goals, you realize they are the ones going above and beyond. I learned most of the five steps, and I TOTALLY agree with step #1.) Unordinary coaches, bring extraordinary encouragement, and inspiration. YES, that's what I got out of this video. Every time I watch one of your videos Coach Jane, it inspires me, (and yeah) maybe it's "never" going to be a marathon with this "old guys' body" that keeps "not cooperating" with my brain, LOL. That's OK, I still find tips/training that have inspired me to be healthier/better than I would have been without your vids. I have NOT discounted running 10 miles at your pace though, some race, somewhere, hope to meet you and keep up for those 10 miles, I will consider that a WIN !!!

    Im smack in the middle of chasing that goal to BQ. You know because you're coaching me. 😆. There are days that goal seems so far away and then those are those break through days where I get excited because I know it's achievable. I think to chase a goal like Boston you really have to enjoy running on some level. There are just too many hours spent doing those "boring slow runs" no to. I hope your foot is feeling better.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane  Год назад +1

      That's what it's all about...taking the highs with the lows. When you are in it for the long haul like we are, the doubts, the lows, the "bad" runs, the setbacks, etc. are all part of the process. Like you say, "If it was easy, everyone would do it." We keep pushing on even when it gets tough. Re the foot: working through it still with PT/podiatrist, but 12 miles yesterday and I feel optimistic!

    Thanks for this, I needed it. Do you think you'll get a better time running a fast course that has a 5,000ft elevation drop at a higher elevation than you're use to like the Revel in Denver or a flatter course that is at an elevation your use to running? Training in Kansas.

    • @runningwithjane

      Hi Damon - the REVEL courses are SO downhill that I really think you won't be very affected by the elevation. Most people get insane times on those no matter where they are coming from. Example - I had an athlete from Phoenix do on and he had no issues and got a huge PR.
