      Relay races have kinda come and went here in the US. Ragnar was real popular a few years back but the interest has dropped off since 2018ish. Covid also didn't help. But relays are a ton of fun and a great experience for any level of runner

    It would be very interesting to see a comparison between American/European/Western training styles and the Japanse styles, particularly in relation to nutrition, gear etc

    The corporate sponsored runner framework really gives Japan an edge. If you compare that to the US, elite runners are really scraping by financially. In Japan they have a job and are supported to keep running at the elite level. Totally unique.

    • @pmcmeanders7116
      @pmcmeanders7116 10 месяцев назад +2

      are you meaning NIL? Yeah NIL may change things a bit but it will probably mean some runners might stay in college longer (meaning not going pro prior to they graduate).

    • @noelthatcher1996
      @noelthatcher1996 10 месяцев назад +2

      Not sure that Japanese corporate runners have an “edge” over the US athletes competing in the NCAA or in pro teams like OAC. Japanese runners (other than Yuki) have consistently failed to deliver outside Japan.

      Matt. It would be great if you guys could collaborate with Brett Larner of Japan Running News on this series as there are very few, if any, people who understand 箱根駅伝 better.

      @@noelthatcher1996 On average they do have an edge. The depth is miles apart, like it was said in the beginning of the video

      What are the drug testing/compliance measures like? ARE there any? This is corporate/local competition. Not internationally certified right? So I would assume compliance measures would only exist if all the corporations supporting this event agreed to governance by an enforcement agency?

    Great video and look forward to the series..I watch Japanese ekiden almost every day when I am on the treadmill..our ice and snow lasts 3 to 4 months so it's the best way to stay fit..in addition to ekiden racing there are a lot of japanese runners with you tube channels and wear a camera on their hat so it's much like what you see in a real..gets me thru the dark and cold winters..

    great video matt. really looking forward to the rest of this series. would it be possible to have subtitles instead of a voice over when the coach speaks/ when someone is speaking in japanese? i think it would make it easier to watch for native japanese speakers. personally, i'm learning japanese so it would be good to hear what the coach is directly saying as well

    T.V. coverage of the Hakone Ekiden lasts 5 to 6 continuous hours a day on Jan. 2 and 3. Distance running is just that popular here (I live a 6-minute jog from the 3rd leg of the course). That kind of prime-time T.V. coverage is simply unimaginable in the U.S., where so-called minor sports like T&F, cross-country, and road racing have been forsaken for big-money sports like football, basketball, baseball -- and even golf and tennis. Young Japanese grow up seeing their high-school, college, and corporate running heroes on T.V. week after week. That gives them enormous motivation, which goes far in explaining the country's incredible depth at the longer distances, particularly the marathon.
