Can't believe this content hasnt been delivered to the mainstream Western Audience yet, seems like there is lots of untapped potential here!! Very excited
Relay races have kinda come and went here in the US. Ragnar was real popular a few years back but the interest has dropped off since 2018ish. Covid also didn't help. But relays are a ton of fun and a great experience for any level of runner
There’s an anime series based on this. It’s called run with the wind. Great history and there’s a lot of fun and interesting details in it. Loved the video btw!
It would be very interesting to see a comparison between American/European/Western training styles and the Japanse styles, particularly in relation to nutrition, gear etc
The corporate sponsored runner framework really gives Japan an edge. If you compare that to the US, elite runners are really scraping by financially. In Japan they have a job and are supported to keep running at the elite level. Totally unique.
are you meaning NIL? Yeah NIL may change things a bit but it will probably mean some runners might stay in college longer (meaning not going pro prior to they graduate).
Not sure that Japanese corporate runners have an “edge” over the US athletes competing in the NCAA or in pro teams like OAC. Japanese runners (other than Yuki) have consistently failed to deliver outside Japan.
Matt. It would be great if you guys could collaborate with Brett Larner of Japan Running News on this series as there are very few, if any, people who understand 箱根駅伝 better.
What are the drug testing/compliance measures like? ARE there any? This is corporate/local competition. Not internationally certified right? So I would assume compliance measures would only exist if all the corporations supporting this event agreed to governance by an enforcement agency?
Great video and look forward to the series..I watch Japanese ekiden almost every day when I am on the treadmill..our ice and snow lasts 3 to 4 months so it's the best way to stay fit..in addition to ekiden racing there are a lot of japanese runners with you tube channels and wear a camera on their hat so it's much like what you see in a real..gets me thru the dark and cold winters..
What a fantastic series. Thank you for documenting and sharing this - I learned loads today! What an admirable and beautiful approach to running. Coach was fascinating!
great video matt. really looking forward to the rest of this series. would it be possible to have subtitles instead of a voice over when the coach speaks/ when someone is speaking in japanese? i think it would make it easier to watch for native japanese speakers. personally, i'm learning japanese so it would be good to hear what the coach is directly saying as well
In my opinion, it would have been very chill to listen to the interview in Japanese and have subtitles for it. Nothing against Matt's voice though, just a suggestion.
I have watched Hakone ekiden on TV every year since I was an elementary school student. I like ekiden very much and now I run 10km every day. I am looking forward to watching the next episode.
Great series, looking forward to this. Like most people my only exposure to ekiden is Adharanand Finn’s brilliant book The Way of the Runner, so it’ll be great to see video coverage.
Thanks so much for doing a video on Ekiden. Its like the Superbowl in Japan and the college race is the most popular. Japanese are really passionate about running.
Absolutey brilliant mate! I was glued to the screen! Great and unique content, Matt + Sweat Elite team! Doing running a great service, and looking forward to the next video!
T.V. coverage of the Hakone Ekiden lasts 5 to 6 continuous hours a day on Jan. 2 and 3. Distance running is just that popular here (I live a 6-minute jog from the 3rd leg of the course). That kind of prime-time T.V. coverage is simply unimaginable in the U.S., where so-called minor sports like T&F, cross-country, and road racing have been forsaken for big-money sports like football, basketball, baseball -- and even golf and tennis. Young Japanese grow up seeing their high-school, college, and corporate running heroes on T.V. week after week. That gives them enormous motivation, which goes far in explaining the country's incredible depth at the longer distances, particularly the marathon.
Fascinating, Matt! Sweat Elite really has the best online running content, and you keep upping your game! Super impressed. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next episode.
Excited about this series! I read ‘the way of the runner’ by Adharanand Finn’ at the beginning of this year, and got really impressed by ekiden. Your series is only going to strenghten my feelings towards this event!
my dad ran an ekiden on an ivy league all star team some time in the early 90s, really cool to learn more about how it works and how big it actually is
Outstanding piece of content! Im keen to learn more and become a proper Ekiden fan just in time for january :) Cant wait for the next episode in the series!
Fantastic stuff! Really looking forward to this series. Living in Japan, Ekiden is my favorite time of year. Hopefully your Japanese pronunciation will improve during your time here Matt.😂
These are the modern day samurais. Do you remember that 80s song? 😍 Is their a Ekiden for women too? Japanese women are among the most beautiful in the world.

No Africa?
Mr Finn wrote an awesome book about it...
There is a book about this
The mountains of Hakone are the steepest in the world!
More OF thIS needed, make a full series! i've come to know about it from an anime called "Run with the Wind" VERY Highly recommended!

@@noelthatcher1996 On average they do have an edge. The depth is miles apart, like it was said in the beginning of the video

Huge thumbs up! Super excited to learn more about the Ekiden! Great coverage so far.
Multistage races are so much fun. There should be more of these :).

Congrats, that's the best contend on internet... You can be proud of you and your team 👏👏
This is the kind of content I want to see - except any chance of subtitles rather than voiceover when the people (Japanese) are speaking
I’m so excited for this series! Been watching Ekiden since I was a kid and absolutely my inspiration for running!

Great content. Happy to see the elite road racing training lens turned to Japan finally.

Thanks, we will do this in future episodes 👍🏻
Man thanks for this Comprehensive video. Forreal this deserves RUclips Trending. If only if Music Videos weren't flying on Trending page instead.❤❤
Japan, most underrated running culture?
I have watched Hakone ekiden on TV every year since I was an elementary school student.
I like ekiden very much and now I run 10km every day.
I am looking forward to watching the next episode.
First time hearing about this race. There should be an Ekiden based anime!
There’s. It’s called "Run with the wind“
A really interesting docu. Looking forward to the next episodes.
This is absolutely fantastic content.
Can't wait for more episodes!!
Great series, looking forward to this. Like most people my only exposure to ekiden is Adharanand Finn’s brilliant book The Way of the Runner, so it’ll be great to see video coverage.
Brilliant book. Thanks for the note
I just finished that book a couple of weeks ago, so I'm looking forward to watching this video!
Thanks so much for doing a video on Ekiden. Its like the Superbowl in Japan and the college race is the most popular. Japanese are really passionate about running.
Great video, congrats to Matsunaga running 1:01:56 in Ageo for 4th place, clearly he was in good shape as evident of this workout

Thanks a lot for covering this. Loved it, subscribed and looking forward to next episodes leading up to first week of Jan.

出雲駅伝にあなたの父親は参加したのですか?
Thanks for this Matt, this is absolutely fascinating!
Another great video. Very interested to see where this goes! Thanks Matt & tempo_jpn
Im really excited for this series. I wish we had Ekiden in university here in the states.
The commentator did a great job in this video by exposing Japanese training secrets. I am surprised how fast their 3K (2:48 pace is amazing).
Sweat Elite, you came here to a new dimension of footage. Wow! 🙌🙌🙌
箱根駅伝春夏秋冬と言う番組を翻訳して動画で上げてほしいな。彼達学生がどのような大きな気持ちを持って走ってるからわかるからです
Thank you for introducing Japancese Ekiden culture.
Very excited for this series!
Wow, it sounds complicated but it must be amazing to watch, this could the equivalent of the Tour de France for running
Really great to get these insights, thanks Sweat Elite team who made this happen. Really enjoyed it.
Hope you will spend an episode exploring where these university runners come from, the high school system.
It might be better to put subtitles on the interviews instead of narrating it in English i reckon.
Thanks, we will do this for future episodes
Need a "Drive to Survive" Ekiden version.
What I understand about ekiden before is place somewhere in Kenya good to know ,thanks, a good place to run Japan 🇯🇵 someday 😊
よければ日本に来て下さいね😊
man ive been waitibg for this
This is a great video. Thank you.
Good video but would’ve been better just listening to the interview with subtitles
Yep we’ve heard that loud and clear now 😂
Track cycling in Japan is big too, Sir Chris Hoy spent a season there
Great series! Good idea. What is the plan on race day? Would be great to get some english commentary, maybe a live stream.
amazing series of videos !
So fun to watch/learn!
incroyable j'attend avec hâte la suite !!!
Great series. 🙌🏾🔥
Fantastic watching

Please leave more of the Japanese language in🙏
it’s about damn time 😮💨
I want to hear Coach Tsubota's voice directly.
so exciting.
a runner must watch anime -run with the wind which talks about the ekiden !
Super interesting! ❤
Thank you for the good video
other than hard training
How do you do other weak training
I'd like to know what a week's session is like
Love this
Yes!!
How tf are there so many elite runners at a single university? SO wild
Are there many East African runners in the teams? Or any limit to foreign competition?
How is this not an Olympic event?
Awesome :)
komazawa has a 10000 average of 28:08 and hosei ace is 28:28 what a crazy difference between 1st and 7th
なんでそんなに詳しいのですか?
Do any of these guys use Strava?
LMAO I just finished Run like the wind two days ago
These are the modern day samurais. Do you remember that 80s song? 😍 Is their a Ekiden for women too? Japanese women are among the most beautiful in the world.
