The Volcano Surrounding - Sundhnukar Lava Field Overview

  • This video is meant to help you to understand basic landscape features around the volcano and the lava field view or one of my ways to come up with the full story although I really didn't like the light that day and air pollution was a problem. For a while I was thinking about to throw away this clip it's always been my goal to show Iceland "as is" and we do get days like this, and the fly over does actually show the surrounding quite well.
As for my next update, it's nothing new to talk about and I'm just recoveringk from the flu so I don't sound good at all, terrible actually, but I will be able to do a proper voice-over in 1-2 days.
But the short update version is simple, we are just waiting and the offshore earthquakes swarm stirred things up on the peninsula like sometimes happens. The earthquake today in Móhálsadalur Valley near Lake Kleifarvatn was not a total surprise since the earthquake epicentre has been around there since August 2023. More about that later.

Helllo Gylfi. On April 12th, my friend Toby travelled to Reykjavik and Solheimajokull glacier in Iceland. The pictures he sent me were some of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen. While he hoped to experience the northern lights, his trip was a little short to see them. However, I'm really proud of him for traveling to Europe independently for the first time. From our conversations, it's clear Iceland is an incredibly scenic country with friendly people, very hospitable. Very glad he was able to visit your beautiful country and capture its natural wonders on camera. It seems Iceland is a tranquil place worth visiting.

April would be rather late to see the northern lights. He should travel north in the darker months.

As a European (French) I tend to forget Iceland is in Europe because it's in the middle of the North Atlantic ocean while the rest is only a few hours away by train, I should really visit someday, hopefully when a friendly touristic volcano pops up in a safe area.

The rotation of the camera gives a very good view of the extent of the lava field and the light is just fine. It is amazing how close the cone is to the power plant. I wonder how the volcano is affecting the operations of the plant with regard to the hot water they're tapping into.

I love these 360s. When travelling there its hard to always appreciate the overall terrain. The drone is spectacular and with such a gifted photographer/pilot operating it! Thanks Gylfi. So much has changed in the mere 6 months.

Glad you didn't ditch the clip, even with the light & air pollution you have captured the amazing details of the landscape around the eruption, all the channels, mounds and dips. It is your attention to detail that makes your work stand out from the others. I hope you feel better soon and thank you for showing us your stunning country.

It's astonishing how much my eyes struggle to get an estimate for distance and size of this landscape as long as there's nothing "known" to see. The streets in the 360 then help. BTW it's perfectly okay not to show only videos from perfectly touristic weather conditions. Should we ever make it to Iceland we want to be prepared. 😉

Hi gylfi, thanks for the pictures.
even if teh wheather is not that great, it is still fairly ok. it shows nicely the surroundings of the volcano.
at 1:50 is it the location of the former volcano from last year that we can see ? I was wondering of close it is at the eye. I can see it on a map, but with teh pictures, it is easier to grasp.
If you find a map with the distances that you are allowed to use it could also bring it more into reality for us, just to figure out the real size of the eruptions location.
and again, many thanks and greeting to iceland from mainland europe
