The most important shrine along the 'Old Tōkaidō' highway
🐱 Mishima Taisha is the highest-ranking shrine in the region, and one of the greatest divinity on old Tōkaidō road between Kyoto and Edo.
🐱 This shrine is located in the center of Mishima City. The name "Mishima" comes from "Mishima", which means the Izu Islands, and this shrine was established to protect the land and town from the volcanic activity and earthquakes that have been active in the Izu Islands since ancient times. This is located along the Tokaido, and is said to have been the object of reverence by Minamoto no Yoritomo and other famous military commanders.
🐱 There's a building of the shrine museum where some treasures are exhibited. Museum shop is on the 1st floor. Enjoyable for those who love Japanese history.
🐱 Deers are in the court and you can feed crackers that are sold at the souvenir shop.
🐱 The fragrant olive that grows in Mishima Taisha Shrine was designated as a national natural treasure by the Minister of Education. This tree with its lemon colored flowers is unique for its sweet aroma that is rumored to drift in the air for as far as eight kilometers. This tree grows within the shrine grounds and is said to be the oldest and largest olive tree within Japan at 1,200 years old.
