We love Gather Round. I love how you broke it down by age. This is really helpful.

I’m so glad I saw this! We have been doing GR exclusively plus math for 1 full year and my son is lacking in the writing and grammar department, so I’m adding IEW Structure & Style and Fix It Grammar. He will be in 4th grade. He just needs more instruction, then we can go back to doing only GR once he’s confident with those skills. So we will skip those work pages for him and I’ll still do them for my 1st grader once she’s done with the GR ready to read 1-4 which has been FANTASTIC!

Thank you, have you done a video for the curriculum your middle schooler is using?

Not yet! I was just written up notes for a general video on middle school, because I was struck with inspiration last night! I could do a specific curriculum one as well though too!

I am considering IEW for my all my kids but was wondering if IEW would be too much to add to GR as I did notice in some units a lot of writing assignments. Not sure what to do. Was thinking if using IEW with my high schooler first. I kind of feel like they need some real solid structure and checklists to go by like what you have mentioned with IEW. Any thoughts? Thanks, Shell

Stick with GR for the younger kids, and go with IEW for your high school student! I think the older child will enjoy the specific steps and structure of IEW, and they will enjoy working independently if you get one of the SSS programs for them. If you have multiple kids, the beauty of GR is that then you can teach them more together, and if later on you find that they or you would like the structure of IEW, you can always add that later. We are planning on doing a mixture of both GR and IEW this year since I do love them both!
