- Abandoned Blockbuster - Ashland, KY. Closed up over 11 years ago and left to rot ever since. Blockbuster was, at one time, the leading video rental store in business. Due to technology advancements and the internet, Blockbuster steadily declined into extinction. This is one of the very few locations still standing abandoned.

I worked at this location from 2003 to 2006! The new releases were all around the walls and older "library" movies were to your left. The video games were in the little area to your right (PS1/2, Xbox, and GameCube era). Windex on the counter is hilarious because that was about the only cleaner we could buy. We had 4-6 VHS rewinders on the back counter. On my last day we played wiffle ball inside the building after close. Tons of memories in that building! Many good!
I didn’t know that so how was the work
What I would do to go back to 2003 🥲
Gosh, my early teenage years, they were so much fun with all my neighbor friends.
I miss going to the video stores with my friends to rent movies in the late 90s & early 00s.
There were like 4 mom & pop video stores near my house. When we couldn't find a movie or game in 1, we would go to the other 1. Sometimes we ended going to all 4 lol The good ol' days of my childhood.
I worked here 2008-2009! Those were the good ole days
I worked there the summer of 2002!
Ashland native here. The sign was still on the roof until about 2-3 years ago. It got vandalized and the remainder was removed. Everyone here was upset about it.
Coal grove native here and I saw it too. I was exploring the place then I noticed it. There was glass shards everywhere. So terrible
I’m an Ashland local and I still look over at this place even though I drive by it every day. It’s a time capsule, and I always show it to my friends from out of town any time they come visit
Oh yes… the good old days of renting videos at the video store! I can remember when we first got a VCR, it was Christmas of 1985. The first movie we rented was Back To The Future. We didn’t get a Blockbuster in our town until the late 80’s, or maybe 1990. We rented movies from a place called “Video Plus”. A family owned place, the owners name was Charlie. I haven’t thought about that for a long time. Thanks for sharing this video!!!
I was on the opening crew for that location. Good memories and wonderful people.
Welcome to Ashland!
The Foodland you mentioned closed after a nasty flood that caused damage to the building and a major loss of product. The smaller shops and the old rite aid were left in bad shape too, but the rite aid was salvaged, ( iirc the damage wasn’t as bad) and is in use now.
I can’t recall what year our blockbuster went under, but I think it was before the flood.
Safe travels.
That Foodland flooded in May of 2011. I remember because it was around my birthday. The Blockbuster was already closed at that time
I remember when that happened I used to live in Ashland there are times I miss it
So cool! There's nothing like the memories and nostalgia you have for Blockbuster.
I remember shopping at Blockbuster with my dad when I was little. They were definitely fun times for me.
Hey Wallie, good to see you covering this abandoned Blockbuster in my old hometown of Ashland, KY. Just 20 miles west of Ashland on I-64 in Grayson, KY is an old Kmart building with the Kmart sign still on the building and out front. You can see it from the interstate. I believe it's occupied by a flooring company now. Always enjoy your videos!
You're an idiot
Man, this brings back so many memories. It's good to see the sign still up and the shelves still inside the building. Great find for sure,
FINALLY! I've been waiting to see an abandoned Blockbuster video for AGES! And right before Christmas too! This was a good present for the internet! Hopefully you're able to find more of them. Maybe even a Hollywood Video. That would be WILD!
Edit: I just saw the sign... The fact that the Blockbuster sign is STILL up, towering high, is just so surreal to see. It's not even JUST a Blockbuster sign. It's a Blockbuster VIDEO sign. I remember when they phased out the full name to just make it Blockbuster. But at the end of the day, people were still and always will be calling it "Blockbuster Video".
What is so awesome about this?
How do er define “abandoned”?
We already know it happens either way other businesses.
Why is the Blockbuster one noteworthy?
Pausing here. You guys seem to be digging it.
Enjoy.
its remained untouched for the most part as i lived in the neighborhood next to the shopping center up until 2012. (i still take frequent trips down to the blockbuster location to check its condition) the foodland closed in may 2011 due to a nasty flood and a landside damaging the building. the blockbuster closed sometime in 2010, i cant remember so this is a guess but its right around there. it had the "BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO" signage up on the roof up until 2020 where it looks like either a storm came through and damaged it, or vandals got to it. it is one of the VERY FEW blockbusters that still remain intact for the most part. as of june 2024, the building is still standing. there is also an abandoned exxon gas station at the intersection paralleling the plaza where this blockbuster and foodland location currently sit at. it looks like its been closed since the late 90s or early 2000s.
I live in Boyd County (about 10 minutes from Ashland) and i pass this location often. When i was a kid, there was a blockbuster location just about a mile from my house. Those were the good old days. It was so exciting loading up and going to blockbuster. Getting to rent new PlayStation games! The smell of popcorn and grabbing candy. Man. I wish we were still in those times.
I see this building nearly every day and went to it often as a child. I rented many VHS and SNES from here. Unfortunately, the sign on top of the building was there just until a few years ago when vandals destroyed it one letter at a time.
Hey, I live in Ashland. This video popped up on my phone's Google homepage. Glad to see you here and loving one of our older treasures ❤❤🎉
Same here, I drive past it every day to and from work!
Me too. I see this place all the time. Only ever visited it a couple of times when it was still open.
Same here!
It's awesome you found this abandoned Blockbuster video.
The Foodland closed at least a decade ago when the area was flooded. That may have something to do with the closed Blockbuster. I have peeked in the window and there was still a lot of Point of Purchase signage inside. I have spent many an hour in there. Your video indicates that they have cleaned it out. I sent a link to a friend who worked there.
An awesome video, Wallie! Kudos to your RUclips Channel! 👍👍👍👍 We had a Blockbuster here in Weirton, WV on Three Springs Drive. I liked Blockbuster and rented movies from there. I also bought movies from Blockbuster.
What a step back in time, holy crap. What a time capsule. This brings back alot of memories. Thank you for sharing this brother. Hope all is well
😂🤠 howdy from coastal Mississippi. Excellent video. My blockbuster became a fitness center 😮 l also remember the Foodland
I like these abandoned vlogs which new and old can discover or reminisce the place and what the place looks like in all its glory before being abandoned😢.
I've rented many games and VHS from this exact blockbuster. Be cool to see the inside of the abandoned food land next door
WOW! What an awesome find! I have been wondering whether you would find an abandoned Blockbuster video store! Great video! Nice!
I see this one a decent amount of times when we run through Ashland. Kinda awesome to see that people make videos in close areas.
WallieB26, really enjoyed your awesome abandoned Blockbuster video! There was one in Durant but, never noticed the building anymore. Sorry, I've missed so many of your awesome videos! I've never been to a Blockbuster. YOU'RE AWESOME!
I was wondering just the other day if this old blockbuster was still standing or if they tore it down im glad its still standing awesome video 👍
Only a few years ago, it still had its front signs still up on the building, either weather or vandals took them down from what I believe.
A blast from the past
First time seeing your videos, this popped up on my google.. i live 2 mins away from this. Foodland is most definitely abandoned. Has been for a very long time. I still have my block buster card!!!! Haha didnt have the heart to throw it away.
I'll be sure to rewind the tape when I have finished watching this.
Happy 2024. I haven't seen an abandoned Blockbuster in years but wow. This place looks exactly what the used to look like back in 2014. They even have the Quick drop still. Anyways, I hipe you find more cool stuff on your road trips this year Wallie. Take care.
Fun fact, that Foodland is still very much abandoned. No hopes of restoring or repurposing it. The dumpster in question is for Tristate Liquidation in the little strip beside Foodland. And I'm not entirely sure what date the Blockbuster sign on the roof was taken down, but it was still up and functioning after covid began.. It was still there in June of 2020 that I can remember. Unfortunately, the Foodland did have some homeless break into it through the backdoor, so it does get watched frequently by police.
The one on the roof was taken down a year or so ago
I can’t believe how destroyed it gotten. 😱. When I was there the Blockbuster sign was still on the building. Looks like someone stole it. Sad.
When I was *there
@@poncho828huh?
I live in Ashland, I worked at a youth facility back in 07-09 and would rent movies here for the kids. One of the employees once told me when checking out that if it wasnt for the lease with the building owner, it wouldve already been closed even then. Ive heard people has inquired about the building since Blockbuster closed but the amount wanted is insane.
Oh, the nostalgia! I wonder if it still smells the same inside?? Amazing find, Wallie! I'm from Kentucky, myself, but I grew up in Louisville. Our old Blockbuster is now a mattress store. Or at least, it was the last time I was by there...
That was so awesome 😎👍 what a great way to step back in time thanks for sharing
I drive past this blockbuster every other day when I go shopping with my dad and i always wondered what it looked like in there thank ya
That’s my hometown. I lived not too far away from there when they built that Blockbuster
This was my local Blockbuster and the place I almost lost my life. It was around 2002 my graduation year and my friend and I were renting movies because there was a snowstorm coming I believe. When I came out the left door ( facing the store left) I heard a screach and bang and looked up and a red Chevy truck was coming right for us! It had a stuck accelerator and a drunk behind the wheel. It bounced off a few employees cars and we dove to the left , landing hard on our bellies as the truck went right through the brick wall where the quickdrop return box is. It finally stopped halfway into the store with just the bed sticking out. The pedal was still stuck and it was spinning the rear tires wide open. Finally the engine gave out and a huge fireball shot out under the truck burning the carpet. A female had just emptied the quickdrop and luckily saw the truck and it just missed her. The driver digs himself out and staggers around and then kicks the door of the truck and says, "piece of sh!+" He had no regard for everyone he almost killed. The fire department was quickly on the scene and we had to stay for an hour or so writing statements. The female worker was crying so hard and convulsing after she realized how close she came to death. They had to take her in an ambulance. NTM her car was destroyed. The wall was built back quickly. You can tell in the vid that it looks a bit different then the brick on the sides of the building. I remember that store had leaking problems way before it closed. They built it right against that hill. Im not sure why they dont just bulldoze it.
Sorry that happened
I used to love browsing through video stores.
I miss them
Stumbled upon this. I live in ashland ky like 3 minutes from this blockbuster lol and I always wonder why no one has done anything with that building !!
The guy selling it wants WAAAAAY too much for it unfortunately
I used to get movies from that blockbuster. Also grocery shopped at that foodland
Former Blockbuster Video, WOW what difference 11 years can make, WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO!
Wow.. What a difference 👏. Awesome find.
Awesome Wallie
that light bulb you filmed at 5:19 remained on for years after they closed down. It was a dim reminder of that place I wouldn't get to visit again.
That's definitely a step back in time.😮
No Swinging Saloon Doors for the adult section? 🤠
The Movie Gallery in Ironton, ohio near there might still have that. It had one. And it is abandoned just like this store.
I live up the block from that Blockbuster. It use to have its sign, but a year or so ago it started to fall off the building.
That Foodland would always flood during storms. Used to walk there all the time from Bruce apartments close by there.
duuuuuuuude i wish i could go back in time and visit blockbuster again lol-- i still have dvds from when they closed!
Went to this block buster right before it closed, pass it everyday I agree it's pretty cool to still the sign and still having that memory.
Hey there WallieB26 there were two blockbusters in Oklahoma one was at 21st Street and Sheridan Road and the other one was at Admiral place and Memorial Drive and of course they are both gone just like this one you filmed for us to see
One left in Bend, Oregon I ordered a t-shirt from them awhile back 😊
That poster was of Get Him to the Greek which came out in 2010. This building could have been abandoned for close to 13 years!
So cool
I miss those days of the video rental stores. Wish it would come back.
Back in the day there was blockbuster music where you got to listen to a song from a c.d before you wanted to buy it
Montreal last video rental place is closing in a few days, ahhhh good times. Thanks buddy 👍
I'm just glad they still left that sign up there!
Awesome video, we are from Ashland, Kentucky as well. If you want to know of any other places around the area let us know!
It's been closed since at least mid 2011 because Get Him to the Greek came out on
dvd in March 2011
Awesome find! I worked at Blockbuster in 1993-1995😊 great memories 🙌🏼
In a weird way I miss blockbuster I used to get movies from them a long time ago when I was younger I still remember getting Barnyard movie from them and bringing it back
That brought back memories when I was a kid and whenever I got home from school either on a weekend or during the holidays me and my dad would go to McDonald's for tea then we'd go to blockbuster to see if any new Xbox 360 came out and checkout the latest movies ( man I miss them days )
love the quick drop. I would drop the videos in late and then call the store and tell them oh no I dropped it in before the time you must just not have checked it so I would not get the late fee lol thanks for the memories.
This Blockbuster closed in 2010. I remember because that sticker you mentioned was an advertisement for Get Him to the Greek. It closed shortly after that movie dropped
I grew up going to this place every Friday. And the Foodland. There used to be a great book store and a really neat drug store attached to
Cool, i remember the last time i worked at one of these sad to see that they all shut down.
My son said he thought he saw someone doing a RUclips video over there.... At least it wasn't about the duct tape bandit 😂😂😂
LOLOL!!
I remember going there and playing the gaming consoles on display. Those were the days. Super cool video
I’ve seen that so many times
The Foodland parking lot was the literal scene of the crime on July 7th 1994. My dad was kidnapped from the parking lot and later tied to a tree and murdered in an abandoned industrial park. Pretty amazing and haunting to see that parking lot 30 years later.
Wow awesome find can’t believe no more
As a kid we always used to go rent movies from blockbuster almost every weekend and order pizza it was one of my favorite things to do and I miss those times badly and I know you can rent movies online but it's just not the same experience
Hey wallie really love all the hard work you out in these vids keep it up❤
Fun fact: the last poster on the window of this blockbuster was 'Get Him to The Greek'
7:00 oh shit. It's still there 😂😂
So upset you was right in my area and I didn’t even get to see you.
I miss blockbuster, hollywood video, family video etc...sure you can just stream the movies but it's not the same as going in being greeted, looking around, actually holding the case in your hand etc...I personally collect DVDS/Blue rays because (not to sound political) but if a streaming service finds a movie offensive or somebody complains the movie is removed from the platform and/or edited.
correct, that's why my collection will be with me forever...
i spent my childhood going to that blockbuster and then there was an anytime video in Greenup about 10 miles north but they have turned that into something else so there are no signs or evidence or was once a video store
Cool 😎, several repurposed BlockBuster stores in Asheville, NC
This is great. I remember when that particular blockbuster was built in that location
What a blast from deep in the past. But hey I think that sweet and sour sauce was still good. It was sealed and put up off the ground in case needed for another traveler that passes through the spot. I am suprised that bandits didn't make off with that spiral shaped light bulb. I would have been tempted by that myself.
Fun video
There was a Blockbuster next to Kroger's in Wintersville, Oh. I think it's closed but don't think it was so long ago...but time flies.
Wow, cool! Hope that you have a very Merry Christmas, Wallie
I remember we had a big flood that closed the food fair and blockbuster and it just never opened back up either one so sad
I remember shopping for movies there with my family.. So many movies to choose from VHS and DVD
They have closed sometime in August 2009 to April 2012 they look like they were out of business in 2012
I keep forgetting Richmond KU Buccees being two minutes from my house is a blessing 1:20
You're in my town how cool!!! Yea it just stands there. I remember going thrte all the time. Theres abandon Kmart in Grayson. By that Foodland, its a by crates store, was an old book store there.
Hopefully you can come back to the Detroit area soon, there is an abandoned Christmas tree shops that closed in October just a minute away from Lakeside Mall, I actually want to check it out myself after it closed, there were some lights on but the doors were locked up tight. And they still have the sign up as well
Great video! Can’t believe you found this.
At around 7:11 way off by the far wall was a tiny black video case, looks like their was dvds still on the shelf. I also feel like the old Food city was an Ames or a Hills at one time. But I could be wrong.
I actually have a picture of that blockbuster when it still had the sign on the building that I took back in 2020 and it even had a movie poster inside too
A couple of years ago the block buster still had the sign up on the street view that said block buster wonder what happened to the signs
I pass this place everyday. Eastern KY as a whole has a lot of abandoned places.
I have never seen a abandoned Blockbuster on your Channel
Someone who loved blockbuster should purchase this to preserve it and restore it back to its former glory.. then make another tourist spot like the one in bend Oregon.. i just hope they dont tear it down
I laughed at that old _Get Him to the Greek_ poster 🤣
Blockbuster had the best WCW wrestling vhs tapes back in the day
