Dewott is one of the neatest middle stage evolutions, and while Samurott has been somewhat controversial, I think its Hisuian form is a definitive improvement over its Unovan form: sleeker design, no weird gorilla chest, cooler helmet, cooler sabers, and double typing. I think Bayleef, Dewott and for some people Groovyle are also on the list of middle-stage pokemon that can outshine their final forms. I think people may overlook these mons while picking them.

Picking a starter is sort of like picking a level of difficulty for the game. For example, Bulbasaur in Gen 1 can be considered easy mode because it has an advantage over the first two gyms, whereas picking Chikorita in Gen 2 is choosing hard mode given its type disadvantages against the first two gyms. There are other battles throughout the game to consider, but once you get through the beginning, you have access to more types and the opportunity to diverse your team, so the beginning really is a challenge in itself and you rely heavily on your starter.

Comparing Chespin and Tepig has an easy winner.
People loved Chespin when the reveals were first out. I'd say Froakie was more, but Chespin was defiantly above Fennakin. Quillidin is a mess of a middle stage true, but Chesnaught as his Juggernaut design is amazing and really stands out from the other grass starters to that point. Only Rillaboom is built like him in the lineup.
While Tepig started off strong, he just gets worst and worst. Pignite you'd argue is slightly better than Quillidin, but it's still a bad design, and unlike Chesnaught, Emboar makes it worst.

It makes me sad to see the Chikorita line getting a lot of hate. Sure it has its flaws but I wouldn’t consider it outright useless. Its appearance is beautiful in that the buds on its neck eventually bloom into an amaryllis flower, and it is a dinosaur; It’d probably be one of those herbivore Dinos.
As for movesets, it can serve as a bit of a tank. It can learn reflect and light screen which raise both defense and sp. defense. It can learn Aromatherapy which removes a status condition off of you or an ally if you’re in a double battle. And it’s not like it can’t put up a good fight. Even if its level up moves aren’t the best, it’s not like you can’t improve your particular chiko’s moveset with TMs or move tutor. I have picked chikorita every single playthrough of Johto and I have always found a way to use it, and it has never let me down. I love chikorita, even if the majority doesn’t 🍃 🦕 🍐

I always loved how it was like as Chikorita evolved she was blooming into a flower. And yes I always figured she was a long neck dinosaur. Remains one of my top favorite pokemon class but like the chikorits line it doesn't get the spot light many others do. Like for example for johto starters they're in the back burner and forgotten by a lot of people. Growing up there were a couple dinosaur species I adored one being the triceratops and another was the long neck dinosaur, there were a couple others but yeah I loved how they made chikorita evolution like a Dino flower , she's blooming from a bud, but much like her line the ranger class was kinda thrown in the back burner as well. Would be amazing tovhave a pokemon game with trainer class options like being a ranger or coordinator or whatever the person decides to go on their journey. Events that happen and the story would change depending on the path chosen. As well as mini games to work together with other trainer classes or the same one to complete a mission or task. That would make the games more immersive in my opinion and enjoyable instead of the one forced master route to beat all the gyms and win the league. What if I want to be a pokemon ranger and do missions to save and help pokemon and passing trainers? I would like to see gamefreak and the pokemon company give underrated pokemon spotlight and the love they deserve.

@@cocohaven Amen!! I never really had a favorite Trainer class, but I will agree that Pokémon rangers do look pretty cool. It’s also awesome that you have a soft spot for dinosaurs!
I began to develop a love for Chikorita many years ago when my sister let me borrow one of her Mystery Dungeon games (I forget which one, it was either Red or Blue rescue team). The quiz selected Chikorita for me, and I quickly began to bond with my character. The Chikorita personality also seemed to fit me as well, so that helped speed things along. I never got very far in the game; I think I kept dying at Mt. Steel before deciding to give up, but I never forgot Chikorita and I went through a phase where I was completely obsessed with Chikorita. I’ve since grown out of that phase but I still have a special place in my heart for Chikorita. I also want to point out something about the evolution of the flower buds on chiko; apparently I later learned that I think Bayleef’s neck can smell like spices, since I think Bayleef’s neck is supposed to represent different leaves and spices like bay leaves (hehe) and thyme or something. I remember reading that somewhere, I’m not sure if I’m correct on this.
I also tend to fall in the minority in terms of interests; not just with Pokémon but anything in general. To name a couple examples, I don’t like the popular music that everyone’s into and I like a good amount of games that not everyone loves. It’s like I’m subconsciously falling into the minority category on purpose because I like having my own personal bubble and I don’t like being in a massive group of people

Gen 4 = Piplup. I like it's whole evolutionary line, I think Prinplup is underrated. Plus steel types are my second favorite typing in Pokemon next to electric.

Gen 6 = Fennikin, it's the cutest and I have no shame in that being my reason for liking it, and honestly I never noticed the weird ear hair thing until people started bringing it up but I don't think it distracts from the overall cuteness it has.
Gen 7 = Popplio, I do think that it's the cutest starter and to be honest I like the animal it's based off of.
Gen 8 = Sobble, I thought it was adorable, and it conquers it's own self doubt when it evolves. I find it relatable because I was a big cryer as a kid and then I learned to be strong. So I relate to Sobble in a lot of ways.
Gen 9 = The fact that it's a duck alone makes me like Quaxly, I love ducks, Psyduck is tied with Snorlax for my favorite Pokemon of all time just because it looks like a duck, I even looked up how to take care of one as a pet just because I love ducks. I fell off pokemon after Gen 3 and didnt return until they released x/y many years later when the hype was getting crazy for 3d pokemon.
So I didn't really have the fatigue and all that with fire starters. And when I saw the kalos starters I was instantly drawn to Delfox, it was such a cool concept and I liked the design. I also only play mage characters in rpgs so there's that.
I had no idea it was a disliked pokemon though.

I never started Pokemon until Gen V was about to release I started with Emerald and then when Gen V came out that was technically my very first experience as a Pokemon fan. So I never really felt Pokemon fatigue either and since I started when Gen V. My dislike from Tepig didn't come from it was another fire fighting starter and honestly I didn't even know it was another fire-fighting. I disliked Tepig because I thought it was boring compared to the other starters. Pokemon going from all fours to bipedal doesn't bother me though either. Pokemon going from bipedal to all fours that annoys me. Not enough to hate it but still how does a Pokemon suddenly go from two legs to all fours? It makes more sense why a Pokemon would eventually go to two legs.

What I find interesting is that design-wise Water is not often the favourite of each gen but its also rarely the least favourite so its actually the most consistent, rarely divisive. In my mind, fire is the most popular starter type because it's so often the favourite of a gen, and yet it has some of the worst starter designs we've ever seen.

You know, this makes me think about a theoretical future Legends game with those three least popular starters as its starters. One of each type, from different Gens... it matches up perfectly, and it'd make a nice contrast from Arceus, where all of the starters were... if not super popular (though I will say Oshawott, at least in the circles I've been in, was never particularly UNpopular - It's chosen as the starter of vanilla BW and BW2 Nuzlockes about as often as Snivy, and some of the most beloved/popular Gen 5 comics, including the third arc of the original Pokémon Hard Mode and Kynim's Myths of Unova, feature it as the starter of the protagonist!), at least reasonably well-liked already. For marketing reasons they'll probably never do it, but I think it'd be fun to have a Legends game where your starters are all those unorthodox, less popular picks. Give em some love and attention and all :p

Tepig was my very first Pokémon! I got Pokémon Black 2 for Christmas after discovering the anime and trading card game (Small child me had no idea the video games existed until I found out on the internet. I didn’t even get a Nintendo DS until near the end of the console’s lifespan) I begged my parents for any Pokémon game and I’m sure Black 2, being the most current release, happened to be the game they grabbed off the shelf at a Walmart.
All of this to say, I’m 21 now and Pokémon has continued to be an enormous part of my life. I own almost all of the games in the series and replaying them brings me enormous amounts of comfort. Even though DPPt became my favorites and where most of my nostalgia is for, Gen 5, Black 2, and by extension Tepig, will always hold a special place in my heart, regardless of Tepig’s overall popularity.
Here’s to you, Tepig! Thanks for kickstarting my love for this franchise. I’ll always love and appreciate you, even if you are the least popular starter of them all.

The least popular starter statistically is either Chespin, Popplio, or Chikorita. The issue with Chikorita and Popplio is the fan base has declared them to be too feminine of a starter as they're obviously targeted for female trainers. In Japan, Chikorita is considered to be "the most seriously useless starter Pokémon," however because its a classic and has more time to grow a fanbase it's become more popular over the years especially in the anime. With Chespin and Popplio though, they are still roughly new starters and considered to arrive past the "peak" of Pokémon. Between the two it seems like Chespin statistically is the least favorable since grass and fighting isn't the best combo typing, plus its design isn't as appealing to any other starters. With Popplio though, it typing of Water/ Fairy is unique and comes in handy with many battle in its debuted game. While Tepig might be the least liked out of the gen 5 starters, its selection rate is on par with Snivy and Oshawott. All 3 starters in term of design are equally balanced and the only real downside to Tepig in the fanbase is it being the 3rd Fire/ Fighting type in a row. It's stats are greater then the two other starters and even greater than Infernape and Blazikin in defense/ attack. So the actuality is Tepig might be the least favorable out of the fire starters, but the real worst starter statistically is Chespin due to it's terrible stats, design, and underwhelming appeal to the Pokémon fanbase.

    • @J0eMega
      @J0eMega 2 года назад +2

I never played X and Y, but I think it’s because of how the starter typings are designed to hard counter both types of the starter who’s weak to it. For example, Chesnauts typings are weak to both of Delphox’s typings.
However, despite having two type advantages over Greninja, it still gets easily outplayed by the starter it was designed to counter. Whoever decided to give Greninja access to flying type moves must have hated chesnaut lol. It also doesn’t help that the starter it “counters” can simply change its own type, which completely negates those typing advantages, leaving chesnaut as a slow, sitting duck.
I personally have no problem with chesnaut, and I actually really like it’s design. However I can see why people may not get the “dreadnaught” feeling when it’s weak to so many common offensive types.

Some would probably blame Delphox for Fennekin not taking off. They had a good thing going with Braixen, and Delphox was a massive change from it. I feel that it's reveal was what unfortunately caused Greninja to be the favourite starter of Gen 6. At least it broke the chain of Fire/Fighting starters.

At least personally I've come to appreciate the Chikorita line more as I got older and come to understood the game better. It's cool and unique to have a more defensively oriented option as a starter Pokemon, even if it's not a particularly good one

i’ve said this before, but one thing i’ve noticed is that for some reason the ‘feminine’ starters are most likely to be disliked for some reason. meganium, delphox and primarina are mostly seen as female characters in the community or in the anime and i guess people just dont vibe with it. i’d have to admit that meganium is awful to use. delphox has a weird design, in fact, kalos is the only region where i picked the grass starter because i despise froakie and fennekin. primarina is literally perfect tho, so i never understood the hate, perfect design, perfect shiny, perfect typing, good movepool, above average stats, i truely don’t know what primarina shouldve done different.

I'm not sure if it's nostalgia but I really like Meganium. Delphox is my favourite out of the gen 6 starters but Primarina makes me feel weird for some reason. I think it might be the hair and the way its body is shaped but I just can't bring myself around to like it.

I think that the main reason why people tend to not like feminine starter Pokemon is because of 2 main things: the fact that they tend to be male 7 out of 8 times, and the fact that most of the time they tend to not be designed to be more clearly female. That being said, I'm not a fan of Meganium, despite it being my first gen2 starter Pokemon, as well as the first one I raised to level 100, but as time has gone by, I grew to not like it very quickly. Delphox I'm pretty indifferent to, I'd say, it usually flies under my radar, but I do think it has a cool design inspiration, so I don't have any problem with it. Primarina is my favorite water type starter, and maybe even my personal favorite starter Pokemon ever; I always was fond of Popplio (despite how many people disliked it initially), and it only grew on me as it evolved, causing me to quickly become attached to it

I like Delphox, personally, but I definitely agree with not understanding the hate for Primarina. I love it so much and it's my number one favorite Starter Pokémon.

Delphox doesn’t look even slightly feminine to me. Its supposed to be a mage with a wand what’s feminine about that?

If you look at the latest Pokemon Company's popularity poll, you'll find Chikorita higher than Totodile and all of the Fennekin line members higher than Chespin. So I'm not sure I agree with those arguments. Feels more like personal preference, which sums up to an interesting video too, just doesn't capture the whole community vibes.

Chikorita is the underdog. Cyndaquil is the favorite. So I guess Totodile isn't special enough to find his way.
