Basically the reason the cheater took normal kb when you hit his back is because he probably has a velocity modifier that has the "only when targeting option". What this does is it only modifies his kb when he's looking at a player or a chosen target. Lots of ghost clients often have this feature and it's been a thing for a while. Just thought I should mention this to clear the confusion. It was pretty obvious to me because I used to be staff on a few practice servers and to be able to really be a staff member we need to know how go detect certain things like slight velocity and reach just by looking at it in case the anticheat can't pick it up. Anyways, hope this helped ^_^

Well if you hit someone at whilst you take kb then the kb is reduced to minimal so if you can hit the opponent before flying away in the sky you hit them then the kb is cancelled. I might be wrong but this is what i asume

If u use animation mod (such as animation mod in Badlion client or Lunar client) you can switch between 1.8 animations and 1.7 animations. If you use 1.7 animations and dig a block and use your item at the same time (hold down right click and left click) then your item will bob up and down. Hope this helps.
actually velocity doesnt make you just take knockback in 1 direction, it can be customized much further, like 90% in 1 direction doesn't have to be 0% also it can have chances ilke 90% chance to take 80% vertical knockback and 70% chance to take 90% horizontal knockback.
That guy was prolly using velo since some clients allow you to change the amount if your horizontal velocity when taking kB, so he could look a little more legit when using something similar to antikb.
