The 12C was didn't quite cut it when compared against the Ferrari 458, but with the P1 hypercar, the track-focused 675LT, and the 911-rivalling 570S, McLaren hit peak form. Can its latest supercar, the 710bhp 720S, match those highs? DRIVETRIBE's Features Editor Henry Catchpole finds out in the stunning Gran Sasso in Italy…

Forget what everyone else says about _'No passion'_...
Let's not forget the Lamborghini Huracan is just an Audi R8 with a sexy Italian suit...and nobody complains that that's a boring car to drive...
I honestly think that if this car had a _Ferrari_ badge on it, that people would be crawling over themselves to get one...McLaren just doesn't have the same level of kudos with the norms yet. Only truly knowledgable drivers understand how freaking incredible McLaren and their cars are...

    • @eugeneyoon4219
      @eugeneyoon4219 7 лет назад +13

Snakebloke good point. Plus apparently the R8 was a better car to drive than the Huracan, until they developed the RWD version. The supercar landscape has changed I reckon, and MCL have done well to cater to the customer that wants all the theatre, tech and looks but also the comfort of a Bentley.

    • @LegendInThaMakin
      @LegendInThaMakin 7 лет назад +18

Snakebloke the way you say the huracan is just an r8 with an Italian body kit makes it seem like there is something wrong with the r8.
it's a naturally aspirated, high reving v10 that sounds incredible & sends chills down your spine every time you downshift as those cracks & pops & the burble of the exhaust wakes the streets.
how is any of that a bad thing? When people say no passion, it's simply because Lamborghinis and Ferraris have a certain flair to them that McLarens generally lack.
this 720 is great, I'm sure the performonte is even better.

    • @Rascallucci

I always band on about "italian car syndrome". For some reason people are brainwashed to think that if its italian, it's automatically good looking, and "emotional", despite the fact Alfa or Ferrari haven't made a good looking car since the early 2000's

So, to be a real supercar ii first of all has to be LOUD, and then it can't be very comfortable on trips that last hundreds of miles. Which leaves me wondering why I'd ever want a supercar. I think I'd much prefer the McLaren. Or a Porsche.

I think we're going into a realm where these cars are so amazing that we're just giving opinions for opinion's sake. Ofcourse ive never driven one of these but, atleast physically, i dont understand how people can say it "lacks passion" . I mean just look at it, it looks like "Toothless" from the movie "How To Train Your Dragon"!! It looks ridiculously passionate if you ask me ! Also, i think for once a Mclaren looks more passionate than a Ferrari ((488)).

Beautiful video and car. Henry does a fine review as always. But I do think car reviewers in general sometimes miss the point with these vehicles. they fly in to a track somewhere with the vehicle already present and prepped by the factory and then drive it at the limit to great effect. I suppose some Supercar owners have their cars delivered to a track and do the same thing but most people don't live right next door to a track and can't exercise this high level of performance without driving some way to a track or quiet back roads like this. And at that point the always shouty engine and stiff ride is going to turn off many of the people who can afford to spend this much money on a car.
I love a great engine note like most car enthusiasts do but really it is only one factor among many in the quality experience we are looking for in an Enthusiast car. there are several excellent reviewers on RUclips like Henry that really know these cars very well but also seem to place the raw quality of a sports car as the highest single quality to look for. most of the customers for this car can probably also afford to have a GT3 or some other screaming engine in their garage. it seems to me the McLaren 720S would be a great choice to mix with a purpose built track car or the aforementioned 911 GT3.

I love this car. I have huge respect for McLaren for not being afraid to make the car look like nothing else that even they have made before.
While most other manufacturers will just build on the designs of their previous models, McLaren decided to make something truly new. Perhaps that's the benefit of not having decades of designs to draw from.
Yes the F1 is soon to be an antique, but the F1 will always be separate from anything MP4-12C forward in my books.

Supercar? How about closer to a Hypercar?....The acceleration is baffling.....Here in the USA some owners are pulling 1/4 miles of less than 10 seconds without any modifications, which is on par with a Bugatti Veyron! This is probably the car to buy when you cannot buy or afford a Koenigsegg. For the price of the most expensive Porsche 911 or Ferrari 488, you will have something way different....Yes I know, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is faster around the 'Ring, but I don't see anyone flying with their vehicles anywhere to Germany or tracking their cars around a local circuit.....The 720S is unique unlike the ubiquitous 911 or the occasional Ferrari

  • @TheTmat007

What is this man saying? The Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 720s, and Porsche 911 Turbo S are all rivals. But the 720s goes beyond a GT supercar. It is also a BEAST on the track. And maybe it is because of how capable the 720s and the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS both are around the track that Ferrari is releasing the new 488 GTO.

He makes the point, and it's all about what side of that line you land on. Quiet, wonderful ride, automatic, great visibility all round - great qualities in a Golf, but never something I'd want in a supercar. Using a car like this every day just dulls the excitement, and then you're right back to square one. "My everyday car is a 720, so what's my special car?".
Fine, maybe you're average 720 owner has half a dozen other cars and will never be in this situation, but I still view the supercar from a time before wealthy bankers ruined them. I lived next to a guy growing up - he had two cars - a Diablo SV, and a diesel 205. Perfection.

The problem with using Mclarens as GT cars is that they just don’t have the reliability of a 911 or AMG GT. The 720S is a phenomenal car, but it’s not one to drive for 20,000 km/year. Read the forums, they need a lot of work to keep running. Which is understandable, but a shame.

You know I love this review and I hold your opinions in high regard Henry. However, I frankly disagree with you and every-other reviewer that says that this car has no "Soul". I love the sounds of Lambos and Ferraris with their peaky engines, but the V8 in this car has its own symphony. You see the McLaren isn't trying to be a ferrari or a lambo it is its own thing, more Kingsman than James Bond in its understated ferocity. And in my personal opinion, I've never really liked cars that scream but then get overtaken by their quieter rivals, their performance is often nowhere near where the engine sound may lead you to believe, take the LFA for example its great but not as fast as its rivals. Anyways, back to the point, this car is supposed to be everyday's supercar it has to be comfortable on long journeys, the cabin has to be quiet and then with push of a button turn into this high performance precision machine, it has a "Soul" but not the one we are used to and to be honest give it time, it'll grow on you.

I will tell you this. With the Advent of all supercar soon-to-be electric which will be very boring. Lamborghini will be the best player at the supercar field. They will have electric front motors with a hybrid technology and a 12-cylinder and the Aventador V12 and 10 cylinder and the hurricane replacements.this way you will have the ultra speed and the sound and the looks.eventually even Lamborghini will have to go to electric platform. It will be a very sad day. As I said I own both vehicles McLaren and Lamborghini and I love both cars. McLaren plans to go all electric within 7 years. I think once cars go electric I will never buy a supercar again.I would rather have a slower car with a motion and sound and theatrics than a boring electric car where you push pedal and there is no interaction

who cares what you label it. its a car that crazy fast and crazy refined. maybe that doesn't tick everyone's box....some people just want to show off at Cars & Coffe with their 1100hp triple turbo hyper cars that scream at 105db, but to criticize a car, for one of it's design intentions means two things; one, you are not the target demographic, and two, you don't get it. Luckily, for those people, there are other cars. lots and lots of other cars. prettier cars, faster cars (well, not many, but..), more comfortable cars, louder cars, more exiting cars, ect... but only this car does what this car does.

From the aesthetics this could be the very first McLaren since th F1 that is good looking in my eyes. But the sound is still a mess. I don´t know why the turbo sound is so dominant in the McLarens. It just sounds so dull. I think the 720s is sounding a little bit better than the 650s/675lt and certainly miles better than the alphawhistle of the P1.

excellent! The final shot of the 720S ripping past, and then the slight disturbance of a single blade of grass . . .
And yes, I agree with you: the 720S is a supercar. :-)

i don't get why reviewers find mclaren has okay sounding cars or boring cars.. i've heard the mp4 and the 650s they sound so menacing while in the parking lot with the sound of turbo's mixed with a v8 and when it stops at the traffic light it sounds really loud. and the turbo's spooling sound so evil. ferrari's sound pretty ricy at low speeds

Fuel economic and liveable supercars. No-one needs them. Make 'em lairy. Bat-shit crazy. No supercar is truly a daily-driver. They just don't have the space.

Yes. It's designed for comfort for daily driving. Angus says you can drive it for hundreds of miles at a time. Unfortunately most people buying it will never put more than 1-2K miles on it a year.

    I don’t like how “apple” mclaren has become. iPhone 5 = mp12 , iPhone 6 = 570s, iPhone 6 Plus = 600lt, iPhone X =720s.

The only thing I think this car lacks is a more 'emotionally engaging' engine. Paired for example with the Huracán's V10, it would be godly.

Nice video, but your standards are not the ones the average buyer will have. McLaren are supplying this to mid-life crisis people or F1 wannabes. McLaren need to make sure the car does not kill too many of them!

  • @jacksuminsby905

so ur only real point to it not being a super car is that its not as loud? thats cause mclaren have specially engineered the exhaust for performance. its like lamborghini compared to porsche. lamborghini is more thought of as a supercar because its so theatrical in every way and porsche is just so refined. so the 720s is a combination of the best of both worlds. its got the theatrical looks of a lamborghini with the quality and performance of a porsche

Mclaren has past ferrari now this is closer to a hyper car then a super car. 720s is a better car then the Enzo what Is classed as a hyper car.the 570s have closer performance to the 488 then this and I reckon 600lt will have the Ferrari pistas pants down aswell.

This car is just brilliant, I hope people come to see it as a super car, with hypercar speed, non hyper car price that you could put 100000 miles on. Stop caring about resale or the flip and just pour on miles of smiles.

Mclaren have clearly left themselves room to make a stonking LT version. Make the 720s too good & too raw and they would have nowhere to upgrade to.

It seems to me, listening to car reviewers the more supercars becomes more functional for everyday use and comfort, the more the term 'supercar' is challenged. Noisy and uncomfortable seems to be the way.
