not quite flight of the Bumble bee but close...:-)
o_o
If it flew out when someone plays flight of the bumble bee on that violin, wouldn't it be epic?😂
@@theiaselene I would drop my violin out of fear and surprise. Not so epic.
Still pretty sacrilegious though
I didn’t realise this was a horror channel

You were lucky to find an Australian hornet that lives solitarily and feeds on nectar. In Europe, hornets are carnivorous and feed on insects. A hornets' nest can have several hundred inhabitants who will aggressively defend it. Imagine that in a violin ...
Seems like hornets are the one animal that is scarier in Europe than in Australia... Hurray?
@@E.T.42 it’s not the only
Actually European hornets are relatively chillaxed. Wasps are a different thing, those are aggro.
Hornets mostly want to be left alone, but they are huge and noisy.
that's why you only find european hornet nests inside double basses.
@@johanneswerner1140 Yeah, as long as you don't come toooo close to the nest you don't need to worry. I have them living under my roof almost every summer, and they've never done me any harm. And they eat mosquitos, so I'm actually happy to have them here.
I spent most of the video screaming "NOOOOO!!!!!! WHAT IF IT CRAWLS INTO ONE OF THE VIOLINS???!!!" This is definitely going to motivate me to practise, if only to prevent wasps building nests in my poor baby. Good grief.
I hear that practicing 40 hours a day prevents hornets from settling into violins
Which one is my hooooommmmme??
I would've moved every violin out of that space and sprayed it thoroughly. That wasp has already made one violin his home, that workshop is a whole apartment complex to the wasp. Not advocating for cruelty to animals but you've got to draw the line somewhere and my violin is a definite no-no (some things are sacred).
Olaf: I'm going home.
Hornet: so many violins! In which one should I build my new nest 🤔.
And lay larvae in??
As the superhero movies say:
The Hornet will return...
Hornet soap opera.
Location: inside a Strad.
Mother: Next month you're getting married to the boy who lives in the Guarneri.
Rose: But I'm in love with Jack!
Mother: What! The boy who lives in the sacrilegious $100 VSO from Amazon? Never!
Rose: It's too late: he already drew me like one of his French hornets.
@@grantbmilburn 🤣🤣🤣🎻🐝
You've got to give that hornet some credit, it has an excellent taste in real estate.
Was the violin brought in because it had a "buzz"?
Haha! Why didn't I think of that!?!
At first I was “why is Olaf so afraid of a hornet?” And then I was like “o yea... Australia.”
Yeah so even the violins in Australia are dangerous now lol
Olaf: "Hope you find a good home that’s not in a violin."
Brett & Eddy: "Pick a viola next time!"
I don't remember you mentioning this as a possible cause of Instrument Buzz in that particular video...
I am... Not sure what I feel like about Olaf swearing. It's almost like hearing a dog go meow
"Oh meow! A hornet!"---not the same thing but def strange

I think his swearing just shows how nervous he was about the hornet. I find it interesting he swore in English and not German.
@@elissahunt I mean, he has lived in Australia for like what... over 20, 30 years?
@@itzumetric Oh, sure. He was still a teen when his family moved there. What was interesting about it was that even though he still can speak German, he reflexively uses English when emotions are high.
I have to say this
I can't resist
CASE CLOSED!!!
before watching the vid:
how bad could it be?
during the vid:
OH MY GOD-
Imagine if you came back next day and it took its family and moved into one of your Strads 🐝
Put up a sign that says “beware of the hornet” to reinforce your security system.
A lot of people would just have killed the wasp. But olaf is cultured and sensible and he just adapted. And he still has my subscription. Hero.
Olaf: goodbye, little fellow.
Me, who doesn't have these in my country: there is noTHING smALl abouT THat
Here in West Virginia, our hornets are about 2-3 times bigger and they are very aggressive. If one gets in the house, it's a scream fest until I find away to get it out. My cats will try to chase them, so I have to put them in another room so they won't get stung. They don't build nests, they burrow into the ground. It's call the giant ground hornet, or cicada killer. They aren't normally aggressive unless threatened, but if one gets in your house, I guess it feels threatened. It zooms about so fast, knocking into anything that gets in its way. You really can't rest until you get it outside again.
*adds keeping case closed to her list of bug reducing things *
Can't lie you handled that calmer than I would...
Keepin that bad boy closed might be what gives you those bow eating buggies! Keep it closed, but open it and play it a lot. That's the the only possible solution!
Man I wish all violins came with a free pet
I wish Hornets came with a free violin.
Nice, a violin with a built-in tremolo generator.
That happens if you play fly of the bumblebee the sacrilegius way
Coming from a country with not so big insects the hornet comes across as huge. And that it then on top of it decided to build a nest inside a violin, crazy. But I must say I love the way it looks, they're so much cool looking insects out there! Anyways, good job getting him out safely Olaf!
“I was thinking about getting a bigger place and see you do have violas...”
the hornet was living in a mansion 😁
Omg... he could have made a new home in one of your violins..
I can’t believe he left for the night with it free!
What a beautiful creature, and well-done Olaf for dealing with it so calmly and humanely. What a thing to discover !!!
That hornet was inspecting the other violins like he’s looking to set up in a nicer home 😂
I remember the time I found a dead fly in my violin before. I have a fear of bugs, so... I may or may not have screamed.
You have a reason to scream, lots of maggots are inside of a fly.
That's so sweet that you released him. Crazy scary looking hornet. Yikes.
_If you can freak out slowly, you can freak out quickly!_
But seriously, that's just . . . scary! This is something TwoSet should react to.
That's just gross, disgusting and- ughhhh, ew!

T-Shirt, T-Shirt!!!!
And the first order goes to me!
@@CF_NeverForget Sure, but me too!
She's actually very beautiful, though I totally understand that you don't want her in your work shop. (Unless Australian hornets are totally different from European, I'm sure it's a female, as the male ones doesn't make nests.)
Yup a female Abispa ephippium. It's interesting that it is called the "Australian Hornet" because it's a potter wasp. Solitary and docile critters.
This, apparently, is not the first time this has happened. As God is my witness, yesterday I visited a Luthier at Manchester Music in St Louis Missouri, USA. I was trying out violins as the Luthier was talking to an elder couple. They had brought in an old violin and were interested in having it restored. The Luthier looked in the F holes and declared, THERE'S A WASP NEST INSIDE! True story.
Love your RUclipss! Tom
Hornet: **flies out of violin**
Olaf: ...AIGHT IMMA HEAD OUT!
It did shock me, but I suspect it was rather more shocking for Olaf. I'm amazed he didn't huck the crowbegotten thing across the room. Then again, this is Australia we're talking about. A mere hornet is one of the less terrifying things he could've found. He was probably just relieved that he didn't end up taking a fist-sized spider to the face.
Olaf be like "I'm not qualified for this crap"
Damn it, Jim! I'm a luthier not a entomologist!
Haha! Awesome video Olaf! Glad I could find your channel again. I knew I had seen you somewhere before I met you the other week. Looking forward to visiting your shop soon! - Copperfoiling artist/busker from the Market.
Wow, I wonder how long that hornet was building in there; that was a good sized nest.
I'm so glad you didn't get stung! Just watching your video made me shiver.
It reminds me of the Oklahoma Wasps that I had seen while visiting my Granny when I was a kid. Thanks!✌️🌞😎🎻
I'm British adn hornets are rare here but I was in France in the 90s and there was somecolourful insect in the kitchen window of this large house with about 25 people eating a the table. I pointed it out and grabbed a glass and put it over the thnig then slipped a piece of card under it, turned around and the room was empty - I didn't know what the thing was but everyone else did! LOL
You'd never find a Potter Wasp in a Viola! Because our cases are always closed!
Before watching the video I genuinely thought "He probably found some bugs... I mean, it could've been worse! He could've found a hornet's nest!" Then I watched the video and was like "Oh... shit...! xD"
Is very nice to see that even as scary as that bee was. You were kind to it. That pleases me so much. It cant help its scary. And you showed compassion to another life. Much love!
This is Eddy's worst nightmare...
"Ya hear that? That's the sound of MY NIGHTMARES ASYGYBIHHGHGGVGGGG!!!"😱🏃💨🐝
Lol!!!🤣🤣🤣
The reveal of the nest was actually kinda scary 😂 and so was the insect
I watch you Olaf because of your violin stories adventures. So entertaining LOL.
Thank you for being compassionate and setting the hornet free (instead of just killing it) ❤️
Yea, for real. I probably would've used a vacuum cleaner instead of releasing the hornet. Good on him.
Good job Olaf 💝💜💝👍🏻
The hornet wants to try different violins xd
Wow, I was not expecting to find a hornet nest inside that violin, the hornet is massive; Also, I have never seen a hornets nest the shape of the one in this video, it looks like a human heart valve to me! I can understand your fear as I am also afraid of hornets, I'm glad you got it outside safely. By the way, I found your channel through the TwoSetViolin channel and I love it! Your videos are wonderful. Have a great day/afternoon/night, Olaf. 😊😬
wasp spray and fly swatters are the cure!
I had a Fender Stratocaster hanging from a guitar holder on my wall. I hadn't taken it down for a long time. I noticed a black carpenter ant enter it through the cable jack. I took it down and removed the pickguard, and much to my surprise, about 200 ants came pouring out! They were using the pickup cavities as a nest.
“I’m going to keep my case closed as much as possible”
Me who keeps my violin on a stand: *chuckles* I’m in danger :D
Awww, Olaf, so kind-hearted 😍❤
This one was newly ‘emerged’ - you can tell that from the large holes in the mud on the side, which are separate from the funnel shape that was used by the mum to construct/fill it. The mum builds room after room, laying an egg, catching some caterpillars or other insects, stinging them to paralyse them, and placing them inside. She’d the close that room off and then do it all over again. When the egg hatches, it then has all the living flesh it needs to grow to a big and strong larva before undergoing metamorphosis. After a few weeks in the ‘mud nursery’ the new adult breaks through the mud side wall to start the life cycle all over again. I get them here in Townsville all the time.
I would've ran for it😬
Wow you're really brave 👏
Hornet that is a music lover, enjoying the vibrations
... and the vibrato of the violinist! 🤣
Dear Olaf, I have completely forgotten about it BUT my own current violin also had a (abandoned) hornet nest inside. I actually got my own violin in a state of horrible neglect and restored it for myself. It became my main instrument. But yes! I also found a hornet's nest inside. Thanks for reminding me of this 😊
I'm so happy you were able to get the hornet out without having to burn down the shop.
1:40 Olaf saying "oooh shit" is the most wholesome thing ever.
Haha... I literally thought he was coming straight for me... totally freaked me out!
Hubert: I'm going to keep my violin case closed as much as possible.
Olaf: I'm gonna leave this little fella in the shop overnight.
Hornet: Wow, there must be 40 violins hanging on the walls. Free real estate!
I thought the title was going to be clickbait. But, no. Not even close. I actually was shocked. How incredible! 😂😂
Aww, what a cutie! This one's surprisingly docile, you can probably just carry him outside with your hands.
Or just put out a bit of water until he wanders outside on his own, that's also fun.
Dude!!! I hate that I don't live in Australia anymore. I would have been in your shop months ago to buy my new violin....
Me: (sees a hornet)
Me: (runs for my life)
horrific indeed! Would be interesting to compare sound before and after nest removal.
such a kind man :)
Bravo!
Waiting for the hornet to trigger the alarm.
A friend's 18th century Italian violin was found in a loft covered in soot. When it was cleaned off, the varnish underneath was immaculate. However, inside was a wasp's nest, so it had to be opened up and cleared out. It now sounds fantastic.
Thats one big anxiety bug
Amaizing!!
I think I saw an old guitar with a wasp nest before
The violin has been inconspicuously calling the hornets to it. 😄/😱🤭
It’s a didactical hornet that dares you playing the wrong note
I want to see twoset react to this video 😂
a new subchannel for Olaf. HornetCam!
this was unironically wildly entertaining.
What a beauty!
When a creepy crawly lands on a flat surface (so this is not applicable to a violin workshop), sneak up, cover with a wide mouthed glass jar, slide thin card underneath, hold card on firmly, and take outside to release the critter. It helps to have a dedicated jar and card ready beforehand.
Sits here with violin case open.
Olaf, Can you explain why you removed the back of the violin rather than the top? Was the back seam coming unglued? It is my understanding that the back is glued on more tightly than the top, and the top is "always" the side that is removed. Thanks!
If you're ever really worried about a wasp/hornet sort of thing, I recommend using a vacuum cleaner. Just use the wand - that way you can stand back, and the rush of air will usually pull the bugger in, even if he tries to fly away.
Pianos are usually filled with all sorts of nasty suprises. I once was removing the keys from an old upright and found a mouse nest. This is common so I continued removing the keys as usual only to find that the nest was inhabited by a very scared mouse that proceeded to run up my arm leading leading to me screaming to the amusment of my mentor at the time. To this day I now proceede with caution when I see mouse dens in pianos. Though that was the only time I actually had a live mouse still inside.
Which polishes do you think are the best. (Can you sort them from good to bad?)
What was more shocking is that we heard Olaf swear... that really blew me away for some reason xD
I was totally freaking out...
@@AskOlaftheViolinmaker I would have done the same I’m certainly not judging! Love the videos dude.
He was trying to tell you to put some of that inox on your squeaky blinds!
Hornet: LOOK! MORE HOMES!
I like you reacted before you had opened it xD
New fear unlocked: bug in violin.
wow that hornet nest is a piece of art in itself :))))
We had wasps get into our upstairs storage room and started building on a stack of cases 😫 the worst! Thankfully we don’t keep instruments out of cases up there. Now I’m even more paranoid
Good man, Olaf. No need to kill it.
Play flight of the bumble bee on this violin is going to be EPIC
It's amazing how they can build a house in a violin though! Also if you ever have any violins that are not repairable you could try making some wildlife decoration out of it!
"My solution? Leave this place at once." 🤣
I did NOT expect that 👁👄👁
Olaf: find another place that is not in a violin.
A week later...
Violist: Olaf, help, I found a hornet nesting in my viola!
me: this better not be that stick to make your violin sound better
Olaf: ENTER NIGHTMARES
Its winter in Canada, no need to worry about that
this video is so awesome! ahahah so much feelings in one single video
Just sitting on the desk learning about new building techniques suitable for its new environment xD
