    I recently wrote a research paper on the Civil War and I did some reading on Finney and his "new divinity" theology. It's interesting how the great awakenings forged new soteriologies in the American context, which as you say, led to man trusting more and more on his own choice and work to reach God. The proverbial "Ladder" from the mystic Eastern tradition that I personally think is an example of the same heterodoxy that diminishes the Gospel, placing the burden on man's action rather than on the Cross.

    I guess that so called „Free Will“ is an axiom for a lot of Evangelicals…
    they think they can proof it biblically with Mt 23,37 where Jesus blames the people of Jerusalem for not willing to come to him…
    So their conclusion is:
    „Look, Jesus himself says that someone can lack the will to follow him, so there must be free will. File closed.“

      So called free will? That's a calvinist view.
