- The body of st.Francis Xavier has been moved several times since his death in 1552. The body is currently on display in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, India.
Burial
Saint Francis Xavier died on December 3, 1552 on Sanchian Island, China.
His servants filled his coffin with lime to speed up decomposition.
Exhumation and reburial
In February 1553, Portuguese merchants exhumed the body and found it still whole.
Believers removed the body from the coffin and reburied it in Malacca, Malaysia.
Transportation to Goa
In 1554, the body was shipped to Goa.
It was kept at St Paul's College in Old Goa, the first building constructed by Jesuits in Goa.
Transfer to Basilica of Bom Jesus
In 1624, the body was moved to the Basilica of Bom Jesus after his canonization in 1622.
It is currently on display in a silver coffin with 32 plates depicting his life and miracles.
Devotion
The body's resistance to decay has inspired devotion and scientific curiosity.
The relics of Saint Francis Xavier are exposed in a ceremonial procession from the Basilica to Se Cathedral for devotees to venerate.
