The english dub is reall bad, so i would watch the sub. I watched first german dub and german dubs are actually usually good, so, no dont watch the english dub, you can watch any other dub. And faust doent actually uses souls other than his wives, h just used creepy skelletons, without their souls. And the horse makes sense for ren, he comes from a dysfunctional rich famiily and he can be proud and weird. And hao isnt immortal, he can just choose where to reincarnate with his memorie intact, not immortal but op. And come on its anime original but its a dragonball spirit bomb thing. Lysergs arc was good too, and anna kicks yos ass that he trains, so she does important stuff i guess. I really like author, yo see yos chill in him.
Honestly, I appreciate the fact that you chose to watch the dub so you could get a feel for the show the same way your audience originally did. That's some underrated dedication there.

I didn't speak English when Shaman King aired on the only English channel with kids content we had. I'd record episodes and watch them with closed captions and pause to look through my English-French dictionary every minute or so. I'm a professional English-French translator now and it all started with Shaman King and its weird English dub

Heh, brazilian here and also learned english to understand my fave medias. My catalyst was YuGiOh. Liked the anime, got obssessed with the trading card game when parents bought a Konami Official starter deck and wanted to learn how to play the game. Problem is, at the time imports were rarely translated, so I got the english version. Spent months making my own version of the rules book, leaning a completely new thing (table games with insane ammount of rules and conditions which can change due to card - individual unit - conditions) and almost married my PT to ENG dictionary.
Americans might be shocked to find out that the 4Kids dub was itself redubbed for European countries and Shaman King became a MASSIVE hit in Europe. To this day, Shaman King is still extremely popular in Eastern Europe (where it aired on Jetix) to the point where we have fangroups and fans who subbed the first episode of the reboot the minute it came out.
To be fair the anime was massively toned down from the manga. A lot of the more edgier elements are absent, so it's more palatable to children. It worked for the most part at least.
The shaman king 4kids dub was actually one of the few dubs they didnt censor as much they kept BLOOD in something the other dubs would have completely omitted.
Just by this video I saw, guns censor, jeanne spikes censor, crosses, names and apparently samash death? Kinda makes you wonder why do they choose to adapt an anime about death XD

I'm shocked that Funimation would do the whole "HFIL" thing on cable, but 4Kids would say that on broadcast television. Where was that kind of leniency all of the other times something mildly provocative was said or shown in their licensed anime?
SK means a lot to me as I grew up with the series, but also because it helped me overcome some serious things. I am thriving now seeing all the content that I wasn't able to consume in 2000s. SO thank you for covering it and opening the franchise to new audiences!!! I love your dedication and incredible attention to detail in the content you put on.
the thing i like about shaman king is the fact that "only good people see ghosts" which means every single person in the show has to be fundamentally a good person at heart. even if their do reprehensible actions, they only do so because they think they need to in order to help people, or to show how much they care about those they've lost. it forces the enemies to be so much more nuanced than other shows because no one can just be "i want to rule the world and be evil" or "i lost my happiness now no one else can be happy ever again". but instead, the show try's to make you actually care about the villains, and maybe even root for them if you agree with their ideology. my favorite example of this is ryo, to everyone outside he looks like just another punk gangster who only knows how to solve problems with his fists, but once you take any time to get to know him, you very quickly discover his whole gang relies on him as a parental figure to help keep them out of trouble, and to find them a place where they truly belong, their "sacred hang" and this applies to everyone in the entire show, no matter how cruel or evil they seem at first glace, once you take the time to understand them, it becomes obvious that they all just want as many people to be happy as possible, and disagree on how to get there, i love it
It's amazing how different an anime can be from the manga. I read the Sailor Moon manga recently and it is the only version to impact me the way it did. I've seen all the other versions and thought of it as a nostalgic throwback, but then the manga had me thinking about story telling, relationships and how they are depicted in fiction and had me in a creative trance for days after finishing it. It was freaking awesome.
I've been through a similar situation with Chibi Vampire and Karin. With Chibi Vampire (this is the manga's name) it had so much more detail in it, so much more emotion, so much more to the story. In the anime they kept it kinda light hearted and funny the whole time and cut everything way too short. I still like it nonetheless but regardless I love the manga eve more. (Probably because it was my first manga and after finishing it I was in deep thought too.)

So I just realized that in fox kids (latinoamerica) they used the 4kids censored footage but translated directly from the Japanese audio so we got a bizarre half censored show.

Anna is definitely my favorite character. If I wasn't so attached to it, I would send you my PS2 copy of the video game. It was my entry into Shaman King and I love Anna in it. So bitchy, so powerful.
Yeah she was very unique for a love interest character, in a shounen series, the fact that they were already engaged and both yoh and her were so chill with it was very interesting. Most other shows have some cheesy tsudere love interest or some girl next door thing

English dub of Shaman king is freaking incredible. Not only that, the opening and ending, the soundtrack. It has a crazy cool vibe. Even it is better than the new SK 2021 series so far.

It makes me really happy that you enjoyed the series generally! It's the most influential franchises in my life that has always been comforting to me. I was terrified realizing my mortality when i gained my own conscious and after reading a few books of it, it has really comforted and eased my fears a bit more. I'm glad it's my first shounen series I got into with my own volition!
I really liked it as of right now it’s my favorite manga the ending was very different too the point where I like it and the series felt very different to others shounen anime and manga but having similarities too which I really like

This was actually one I really liked growing up, even the interesting opening song they did. I mean it's no Yu Yu Hakusho, but same time it was great. Len was my fav growing up, too, he definitely had well done growth. Also, omfg you are absolutely gorgeous and I am jelly.
Differences between Manga and anime....the manga is soooo much better. I'm talking as a kid who saw the cartoon network toonami Shaman king. I'm Spanish, sue me. And years later I decided to get the manga...and it was soooo much better Edit: Ren's WHAT?! UNCLE?! EN TAO IS REN'S FATHER!!!!

I LOVE this show. Used to have Master of Spirits I and II on my GBA (the one without a backlight 😭, made midnight gaming as a preteen hard as my parents would come in if my lights were on). The series really helped fuel my interest in the spirit realm in our own reality. I’m 24 now and I utilize plant teacher spirits in a similar way that Yoh utilizes more humanoid spirit forms. this was my first fandom - i spent so much of middle school on message boards revolving around this series. unrelated- you are possibly one of the most beautiful people i have ever seen and I have no idea how to explain why and I have no idea why i feel i have to say that but i do.
Just a heads up, those probably weren't sw*stika on her bandana, but the Japanese symbol representing buddhist temples called 'manji'. If you compare the two symbols you can see the design differences even though they are commonly misconstrued. Anyways great video looking forward to the remake of this show!

Yes, Europe got the 4Kids dub! If you remember Tao En being Len's uncle and Lyserg's guardian ghost bein "Chloe", then you definitely watched the 4Kids version. But I'm Romanian and our dub also called him "Hao" and I can't really see him as a "Zeke".

I might be wrong, but I believe Latin America dubbed the original Japanese version instead of using the 4Kids version? Like, 4Kids made a lot of changes to the dialogue and a bit of the plot as well. For example, they changed Tao En. In the Japanese version, he was Len's father but 4Kids changed him to be Len's uncle (because abuse at the hands of one's uncle is so much better than parental abuse, right?).

It's really weird to think that Ren's VA was Elder Price from Book of Mormon. The fact that Andrew Rannells was a 4kids VA is nuts to me.
in Germany ren was voiced by the same voice actor who gave his voice for Stewie in family guy it is amazing what voice actors can do with their voices

English dub of Shaman king is freaking incredible. Not only that, the opening and ending, the soundtrack. It has a crazy cool vibe. Even it is better than the new SK 2021 series so far.

It makes me really happy that you enjoyed the series generally! It's the most influential franchises in my life that has always been comforting to me. I was terrified realizing my mortality when i gained my own conscious and after reading a few books of it, it has really comforted and eased my fears a bit more.

I really liked it as of right now it’s my favorite manga the ending was very different too the point where I like it and the series felt very different to others shounen anime and manga but having similarities too which I really like

I read the manga in middle school abd high school but never saw the show so.. these dubs and voices are giving me whiplash form what I remember.
Oh man, I remember so much about this show. It was the best anime back in the 4 kids days, because early on Faust was just using surgery as torture and that was dark.

This was actually one I really liked growing up, even the interesting opening song they did. I mean it's no Yu Yu Hakusho, but same time it was great. Len was my fav growing up, too, he definitely had well done growth.

I LOVE this show. Used to have Master of Spirits I and II on my GBA (the one without a backlight 😭, made midnight gaming as a preteen hard as my parents would come in if my lights were on). The series really helped fuel my interest in the spirit realm in our own reality. I’m 24 now and I utilize plant teacher spirits in a similar way that Yoh utilizes more humanoid spirit forms. Also Holy cats, idk your pronouns but youre effin gorgeous ☺ sorry if that was over the line. Honestly, Shaman King was my first anime. I think I might have been watching pokemon as well, at the time, but Shaman king. Oh boy. This series is just pure nostalgia, shot into my veins.

Just a heads up, those probably weren't sw*stika on her bandana, but the Japanese symbol representing buddhist temples called 'manji'. If you compare the two symbols you can see the design differences even though they are commonly misconstrued. Anyways great video looking forward to the remake of this show!

Yes, Europe got the 4Kids dub! If you remember Tao En being Len's uncle and Lyserg's guardian ghost bein "Chloe", then you definitely watched the 4Kids version. But I'm Romanian and our dub also called him "Hao" and I can't really see him as a "Zeke".

Hey it's about the Show I loved as a pre teen/teen no one else has ever watched. I am not (that) crazy after all...but I could have done without experiencing the 4kids dub.
I literary screamed when I found out last year they were redoing Shaman King. No one I tell you no one ever knows this anime. And now they are doing the completed version. At last there will be people talking about it.
SAME. I was obsessed with it as a preteen and was endlessly frustrated that none of friends cared about it, and no one else seemed to know about it! The internet was still in Geocities/Angelfire era and I remember having to troll forever to find the few fanpages that existed for Shaman King...

I might be wrong, but I believe Latin America dubbed the original Japanese version instead of using the 4Kids version? Like, 4Kids made a lot of changes to the dialogue and a bit of the plot as well. For example, they changed Tao En. In the Japanese version, he was Len's father but 4Kids changed him to be Len's uncle (because abuse at the hands of one's uncle is so much better than parental abuse, right?).
@@Erika-xm2mi it was made by 4kids too and made some changes and added some lines but they kept the series a lot more closer to the original, i remember that was len's father and not his uncle
