it’s weird to see what they’ve both become nowadays, nintendo trying their hardest to be the next disney, and sega…doing what they do…scraping by… (although i am looking forward to their bout of ip reboots coming out) i just wish sega could find some good ground to stand on and flourish (maybe we could finally get the dreamcast 2) btw just found your channel right now, and it’s actually really nice, down to earth, funny, doesn’t have any overblown modern tiktok style editing, it’s just a really good watch/listen; hope to see your channel grow!
iirc Dreamcast didn't have proper security measures and you were able to easily burn CDs to grow your library of games instead of buying it. This probably hurt the console a lot and Sega's name as far as console is concerned.
Tbf them openly acknowledging Sonic prawn on their social media is like, the 2010s-20s version of the 90s "too cool for school" attitide. In all seriousness though, yeah. Big highkey, as far as the IP and consoles and overall vibe in their peak, Sega is my favorite game company. They made a lot of revolutionary steps that oftentimes the main mistake was that they were TOO ahead of the game for folks to appreciate. Theres a lot of factors that led to the domino effect of Sega leaving the hardware market, but from what ive learned, it seems the main reason was their own in fighting. There was a lot of beef between Sega of America and Sega of Japan for some reason, and it led to some odd decisions in the 90s that contributed. That being said, Sega's library is peak for me. Sonic of course, but Nights, Space Channel 5, Sakura Wars, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Valkyria Chronicles, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Rhythm Thief, Virtua Fighter, Monkey Ball, Shenmue, Phantasy Star etc. I've never played a library that consistently has games that just like... Encapsulate unique vibes so much while being just good video gamey ass video game fun. I think their focus on bringing the arcade experience/vibe home was a huge personal appeal in me going back to play their older stuff the past couple years. And many have seen recent revivals too. All in all, they gotta have the most interesting history in the industry.
I missed out on dreamcast, but that sega channel on the Gensis was mind blowing to me as a kid.
