13-year old Nkululeko was born fatherless in South Africa and infected with the HIV/AIDS virus his mother was suffering from while she was pregnant. At some point his mother died, and two weeks later his grandmother, the only other person who had cared for him, died from complications with various health problems.
At 10 he was found by Aids worker Dr. Dr Carol Hofmeyr living with his aunt Quenie with pneumonia and sores all over his body. Hofmeyr took him under her wing, but soon found she needed to have the local hospice look after him and make sure he took his medication on a regular basic.
Nkululeko eventually became sad, angry and rebellious, was refusing to go to school, and didn't want to live at the hospice anymore Hofmeyr managed to figure out that kids at his school were making his life miserable by making fun of him for having no family and living at the hospice.
In this clip, Hofmeyr got together with Queenie, community and hospice workers, and Nkululeko to try to find out what Nkululeko thought they might be able to do to make life better for him. But he refuses to admit he's upset with anything. When asked if he wants to return to live with Queenie or stay at the hospice, he says he's going to go live in the trees at the plantation. Upset, he gets up and walks out.
Hofmeyr reveals to the group that Nkululeko confessed to her the other day that he wants to die. That he wants to go to his mother in her grave. And that he wants to stop taking his medicine so he'll get sick. What follows is heart wrenching.
Great work being done to address AIDS in South Africa. Watch the entire show:
