This song transports me back to 1967-71 when we used to sing it at Gayaza High School, Uganda, with Miss Hobday blaring away at the piano! Oh the good old days!
I am also hearing this the first time in 50 years, I was taught this I primary school choir, can still remember the words, it brings a lump in my throat, tear in my eye just hearing this song again, thanks for the upload.
Tears in my eyes, as I recall being taught this at primary school - by the best teacher I ever had. His name was Eric William Blatchley; so kind hearted and such an intelligent and well-read man. Dassoon - it's "O'er the ocean flies a merry fey!', a fey being a synonym for fairy.
Jill Grant I know exactly where you're coming from my friend, I learned this song from my mum and probably primary school, but I only found it on RUclips last year, it brought such a lump in my throat and a tear to my eye, I used to wonder whether I was imagining this song because no one my own age seemed to know it and then you tube came to the rescue. Glad you like it to.
Jill Grant I now know exactly how you feel tears in your eyes after all these years, this song does that to everyone that ever learned it in a bygone age, that is now gone and will be gone when people like you and I are no longer here, bless you my friend.
From a series called " Singing Together " which we had at my Gloucester junior school in England in the 70s. This takes me back in time. I wish I could go back.
I learnt this at Pearcey Road Primary School in Bedford back in 1954. Our music teacher was "Snowy" Wintersgill. So many memories come back. Lovely to hear it again, and sung so well.
I saw some foam on a TV ad and immediately remembered this song learnt about 60 years ago at junior school. Beautiful song brought tears of emotion to my eyes
Wow, I was surprised when this memory of a sweet song I learned at school brought tears to my eyes, then I read the comments and saw other people were affected the same way. David Carson, music teacher, Wishaw High School, c1974
As I hear this song, my body feels nostalgia as I recall hearing this song during my business class in year 10. The teacher showed us this song, his name was Mr Hugh Coffley. One of a kind teacher, he was the most fun, energetic teacher I’ve ever seen. Business still fascinates me until this day.
Sang this in the choir in 1987. Cannot remember all the words, but think my mind is going = just joking, no this is a beautiful memory. Was hoping to find our own recorded version, which was played on the radio the year after. It was awesome!
Like others who learned this from a primary school teacher and remember it with great fondness, I did as well but as my name is Fay - it had even greater meaning and impact for me. I thought at the time that my teacher had chosen it specially for me. Now, as I read these comments, I realise that it was taught in many primary schools :)
@@possumyx In East London mid 50's my primary/junior school (all boys) music was combined with country dancing. Boys danced with each other. Ok until the girls school next door came in then..... YUK. Little did we know then.
In the fifties we loved Singing together using our slim bbc booklet linked to the radio programme. It was so exciting to sing Mariana, as well as sea shanties , and folk songs from many countries. The politicians put a kibosh on this wonderful popular singing, just as they have closed down silver , and brass bands and theatrical performances.
O'er the ocean flies a merry fay, Soft her wings are as a cloud of day, As she passes all the blue waves say: "Marianina, do not roam, Whither, whither is your home, Come and turn us into foam, Marianina, Marianina, Come, O come and turn us into foam!" O'er the fields she passes to and fro, By the cornstalks standing row by row, Poppies whisper as they see her go, "Marianina, little friend, Whither would your footsteps wend, Come and teach us how to bend, Marianina, Marianina, Come, O come and teach us how to bend." O'er the mountains when the day is done, When the clouds are gath'ring o'er the sun, While they, weeping, whisper one by one- "Marianina, come again, We have tried to dance in vain, Come and turn us into rain, Marianina, Marianina, Come, O come and turn us into rain."

I can still hear the horrific coarse singing with which we destroyed the song.. ....

From a series called " Singing Together " which we had at my Gloucester junior school in England in the 70s. This takes me back in time. I wish I could go back.

Learned this in primary school in the mid fifties. With ..blowaway the morning dew, Skye boat song, dashing white sergeant and many others.
Add 'Early One Morning'. Great to be reminded of our chidhood songs. Today it'd probably be rap.

Precuz thank you so much for uploading the lyrics for this song.

I have to sing this for a chorus solo thingy
