  • Mountain Dew is one of the top selling citrus-like drinks on the market today. It's owned by Pepsi but had it's origins in the Southern US dating to the 1940s with two brothers looking for a good whiskey/mooshine mixer.
So how did Mountain Dew get it's name Well, the name itself is the answer, oddly enough. "Mountain Dew" is an old term for moonshine with Scots-Irish people and the soft drink actually began as a mixer to go with moonshine and aged whiskey.
Knoxville, Tennessee natives Barney and Ally Hartman developed Mountain Dew in the 1940s. The brothers had had a hard time in Knoxville obtaining a soda they once tried so they came up with the drink.
The brothers were eventually able to procure a deal to have the drink bottled by the Tri-Cities Beverage Corporation in Johnson City, Tennessee.
In the early 1960s the rights to Mountain Dew were sold to the Tip Corporation of Marion, Virginia who later revised the drink's flavoring. In 1964, Pepsi purchased the Tip Corporation and thus acquired the rights to Mountain Dew.
