liam crash - how not to do wiscombe park

- So, this is British speed hillclimbing, the event is Wiscombe Park in Devon, England. The car is a Force HC, designed for hillclimbing and it has an 1100cc Suzuki GSXR engine in it. My husband Liam and I share the car (and he chose the vid title, not me!). Liam was fine, the car was rebuilt - not as much damage as expected! For more info on the sport and an event diary visit www.britishhillclimb.co.uk/ or www.motorsportuk.org/get-star....
Me: He should have eased off the brakes, had plenty of runoff out the back of the corner.
Also me: Sitting safe and sound on my couch going 0mph.
Hahaha you're absolutley right, and I cracked up at the last comment
I had the exact same thought process haha
that's exactly the same speed as my couch :D
Should of have more experience of his cars handling in the wet ,lol
Yeah, locked fronts, but a conscious effort to try and add more left hand lock. Just needed to unblock the wheels momentarily and ease left.
But when the panicking subconscious mind takes over, you’re kind of just watching yourself make mistakes. The only way to avoid it is to have the reaction burned in through practice so that it becomes nature.
I learned that after an accident in a non ABS equipped road car. I knew what to do before the accident, and I knew what I should have done immediately after it, but I’d not really practiced it much for it to be second nature in the way that cranking lock on for this guy was.
I got into sim-racing after that and made an effort to overdrive and overcommit rather than just practicing being neat and fast, and it has since saved me in similar moments where your conscious mind bails and hands the wheel over to subconscious baked in behaviour.
In other words, if you told this guy the second the car came to a stop that he should have eased off the brake pressure and not kept cranking the wheel left, he’s probably very angrily and rightly tell you he knows that.
Enough adrenaline and panic literally disconnects the slower conscious mind from the driving seat and puts a fast unthinking one in in its place.
The skill required for this race is exceptional. I wish him very best for his future events.

Skill or luck ? Everyone do mistakes, but on these circuits means that you are suddenly out. That's a bullshit, no true competition.
@@1StIwY1 what are you trying to say? It’s a time trial, he is supposed to race the track and get the best time. Do you expect someone to run off the track and continue the race? That makes no sense, by running off the track he has 1. Lost time and 2. Caused a dangerous amount of debris to enter the track. He should 100% be out of that run.
Why?

Man even knew what pressure to apply without making the back just kick out alla time I would been going in circles styll
I think it's as simple as water on the visor and little margin for error. Good run until that moment.
Agreed , a lot of standing water on the track, takes balls
Yeap, super brave, just got a bit unlucky! Impressive stuff up to that point!
It looked tentative in places but maybe that's me being an armchair driver
he steered, the car lost traction and the brakes locked up
I’m getting Max’s botched pole lap vibes
A difficult stage in difficult conditions. You can't blame him, he slipped off on the water.
his tiers looked up to much brake force and to little friction to the ground. If he released his brakes he maybe could have saved it
@@channel_abc123_ i'm not english but as far as i know Liam is a male name
@@hmcredfed1836 i was thinking that.
That's ridiculous, you can absolutely blame him because he's the driver. You drove past your ability and or the cars threshold. Simple as that.
Its called a lock up on the tires
he locked the brakes, I can't imagine having the foot to not lock the brakes on every single corner in those conditions. ABS is insanely underappreciated because people forget that with locked brakes you can't steer, which is what put him in the wall. incredible that he made it that far with such a wet surface.
Actually you can steer pretty well if you lock your brakes… into a corner! 😆
Yes, the conditions were extremely challenging. They should have hired me to drive that car.
No he locked up the rear because he doesn't have toe heel skills.
@@VWPirates the front CLEARLY locks up
@@VWPirates Might want to try the pause and step function in YT (arrow keys). The fronts clearly lock up - very greasy. All the heel and toe work in the world wouldn't have saved that one. Lucky it was not too bad and he was OK.
This is terrifying!

@@lackof548 👍😂

Its easy to say that he shouldve eased off the brake but honestly unless its an ingrained instinct, it takes massive balls to do irl. I've built a habit of it sim racing but during a downpour autox event, it felt like an insane concept to get down when you're understeering into a corner. Even when riding my motorcycle during rainy days its really hard to fight the physical instinct of bracing yourself during a slide
Yeah, at least in karting you can turn when your brakes are locked.
yeah it is really hard to get rid of that habit, because if you ever went go karting you feel all of that speed going forward and your fear is locking that habit.
Olivia is a female name. This is for all of you who read "Oliver".

Might sound weird, but when it rains, I throw my car into an intentional understeer to force myself to turn the opposite direction I want to go. That way if it ever happens in real life I know what to do.

Quite interesting to see what non hillclimbers think about our sport 😂
It’s so easy to make a mistake on such a tight track, I stacked our Audi TT at Werrington this year by lifting off the throttle for a fraction of a second at the wrong moment and slid the back wheel into a gully and overcorrected off up the bank. Such is the game we play.
Hope it all went back together okay and happy hillclimbing 👍
Even as a regular person who doesn't race, i feel frustration to crash the car that way. Hillclimbing looks as impressive as rallying to me. Props, hillclimbers!

Not sure if you ever heard of Knox Mountain Hill Climb in Kelowna BC Canada. But growing up in that town as a non-hillclimber, we sure enjoyed attending. It's a great sport for spectators. And now living in the US, it sure makes NASCAR look, like the boring joke it is. Round and round we go. Boo.

I was seriously impressed by that driving. The accident happened so fast that I didn't see what was going on until the car hit the bank!
There is approximately one second of ‘accident unfolding’ then hits the dirt bank. For most humans it was already too late to react.
@JoeOvercoat Not at all, had plenty of time to let off the brakes.. Unfortunately he either isn't trained enough for that, or the training went out the window once he locked up the brakes.
Fair play sir, as the ex owner of a 550hp Supra i would not have even got the car out of the garage in the rain and the only thing keeping me on the straight and narrow was the Racelogic traction control, without that the car far exceeded my modest skills in the wet. Hope the car recovered 🙂
Good point. Seen so many people with fast expensive cars that have never once driven them in the rain let alone tried to drive them fast on a course. Main reason I am looking at an MX-5 as my first sports car, I know I don't have the skills for something more powerful/faster and I want to drive it in all conditions (except snow).
Huh? When did we ask about your supra?
This is awesome, the sense of speed down those narrow lanes is brilliant. Shame about the crash, in those conditions I’m surprised it didn’t happen in the first 10 seconds of the video!

@@eddyc4603 Hahaha good one! Long time someone quoted like this
Challenging course in difficult conditions. Things happen and I hope the driver was unhurt and the car repaired quickly and cheaply.
A genuine accident caused by poor conditions and aquaplaning. Yes, maybe coming off the brakes for a split second then reapplying may have helped regain steerage and braking and give the option of either going for the corner or running straight to the right hand side where there is a long runoff. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing? But in the split second in which the events took place I would wager that the majority of us would have planted the middle pedal and sworn like hell. I know I would. I thought he did well to maintain the little control he had.
I see alot of comments saying his slid because of the water or that he should have eased off the breaks but that is not the reason he crashed. It is not visible in the video but the drivers massive balls, the inertia they built up was to great and thats why he lost control and crashed.
that supposed to be some sort of 60's racing death risk nostalgia?
looked like fun to me lol
No. It's just motorsport. If you prefer a milder variety, you could try the teacups or F1.
@@teabagmcpick889 you mean the F1 where they top 200mph?
@@user-360johnn People have been racing at speeds over 200mph for a long, long time. It ain't no big deal. It doesn't make the racing better than if it barely reached only half of that.
@@teabagmcpick889 we literally have a guy died two years ago and a horror crash few days ago in F2.
I get what you're saying, but thinking F1 and F2 is 'mild' is absolutely out of your mind. Just because it isn't visible doesn't mean they aren't in much risk.
I'm impressed that anyone is able to go this fast even under perfect conditions on this course. It's basically a one lane road, your average street car would probably be going 25-30 mph on it. Add in the fact that it apparently had been raining and now the driver is searching for traction in the corners.
It's nice to see people expressing their concerns about the driver in the comments. Just blaming him for his mistake. Did he hurt anyone? Commenters must be very compassionate and caring. I wonder if they knew him personally. Did they send him flowers and chocolates after the accident? Did they offer to pay his repair bills?

Absolutely no room for error on that road
I like how it turned into a bobsled right after he lost the front and the rear locked up.
That teensy tiny miscalculation led to a crash. The margin for error is insanely small, props to the driver for even making it that far in wet conditions.

Glad you’re alright! Crashes can be bad in places like that.
Did something in the steering go right before the crash? If you watch closely you can see the right wheel turns but the left looks like it is still pointed straight. The left also locks up first too. Hmm.
I noticed that too. Right front got locked and he then couldn't control the slide
Aquaplaning perhaps
Big wide tyres

ok make it better next time. thank you!
During lock-up and Before impact. At 0:42, why are his front wheels pointed so differently? Did something mechanical break before impact?
In all the corners, especially at 0:33, the outer is steering more than the inner. I thought it was supposed to be the other way round as the outer wheel follows a larger arc.
@@evaluateanalysis7974 Depending on the car geometry and how it was designed, some engineers pick "Reverse Ackermann" geometry when they know the outside wheel will be operating at high slip angles, compared to road cars, which only operate at low slip angles.
Reverse Ackermann makes the outside wheel steer more than the inner, to balance the forces between them.
@@evaluateanalysis7974 What your describing is called the Ackerman Principle, but has no effect in a straight line.
Already well explaint, by ouer fellas. One more thing to make it easyer.
The outer wheel will "dig" more into the street this way, you should get better perfomance.
Gutted, hope he was ok. He was absolutely flying!!!
Besides the fact that is it slippery, at 0:40 there gradient actually goes slightly up then down immediately. It's like a little hill. He lost some downforce there. When he regained it, the tyres were already locked up.

To be even attempting that sort of drive, at those speeds and in those conditions is ballsy...
Difficult fast car on near impossible terrain. An error of few centimetres. The margin between winning and crashing is one hair thick. Formula one cars are not designed for wet mountain roads. It takes massive balls just to sit into one of them, in a large track.
Here, well, it's just total madness.
This shows the importance of the ABS system. Those wheels completely locked up.
Or uhh.. ya know... the importance of learning how to brake well!
There's no ABS on my motorbike but correct brake balance and the right inputs means I almost never lock up (almost because sometimes i dont mind a good back wheel skid ;))

I'd like to see you try if you think it's just as easy as "braking well".
Most high level drivers don't use ABS.
Does it look like the right tire turns in further than the left turns out? It’s difficult to tell, but it almost looks like there was a steering failure. Maybe I’m just seeing it wrong from the vantage point of the camera. I screen recorded and watched it about frame by frame, and it looks like the left tire doesn’t help steer as much as it should, granted this is after the lockup

Quick & helpful tip from a couch racer: Brakes are highly ineffective when locking the wheels thus preventing their movement
Why has he kept on locking the wheel rather than releasing the brake?
Natural instinct. It's something that even professionals accidentally do.
If you review the video, the problem was a broken suspension before the crash. See second 41 and 42, broken right suspension
Noticed the wheel angle prior impact. Is that normal?
It’s unfortunate but he seems to be a good driver, I wouldn’t blame him for this

How can you recover in this situation? Would reducing deceleration reduce slip and let him manoeuvre, or is there no way to recover from slip?
Great run!! Millimeters is the difference between win and fail!!
I have watched this in real slow-mo and I think he has a steering/suspension failure. As he approaches the contact point the right hand wheel is turning to the left but the left hand wheel isn't. I may well be wrong, but it looks like mechanical failure, rather than driver error. 0:41 to 0:43 appears to show this.
His front wheels just locked up due to the rain. It can't be more obvious
Nah it's just anti ackermann
