It's Tomb Raider Tuesday! Join me today as I try to solve an unsolved mystery of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, in the third episode of my Tomb Raider Mysteries series.

My theory: the park was built over a real tomb and never got finished. They were going to replace the spike traps for some other non-lethal ones, but the project was shut down before that could happen

We can take this theory one step further: Jean-Yves was working for Set all along. After all, wasn't he the one who sent Lara to all of her artifact-collecting errands, especially in Alexandria? Von Croy's own mercenaries were too incompetent to solve the puzzles and find the Armor of Horus pieces, so Lara was supposed to be tricked into finding them... and then he gets "kidnapped" right when Lara has finished collecting said armor pieces, forcing her to go to Cairo.
Hmmm, lots of peculiar coincidences here ;)

lol I always loved this place in the tomb raider 4 storyline. its a great place and i had never issues to make it through the egyptian adventure - tho admitingly the mummy out of the coffin gave me a bit of a jumpscare back then :D

My theory is that it has been built solely to try and kill Lara. There is no information about it and even the most obscure Tomb Raider locations from the original games has some lore about it.
Yeah, that's a very good point. Somebody placed the key inside a facility that they hoped would kill Lara.
Quite an expensive way to try and assassinate someone.
Anyway, ofcourse they didn’t try to kill her. It’s all boarded up with a warning sign, etc.

@MIDKNIGHTSENTINEL 22 Specifically the Egyptian Adventure. That said, I do believe the whole of Alexandria is a tricky level on a blind playthrough.
The magic mirror room with the spikes was such a clever idea and it took me ages to make it safely to the other side and back again , imagine if it was a real exhibition in Egypt 🇪🇬 that would be suicidal for any visitors and not even allowed by law 😳
Haha, I agree! I thought it was so cool when it discovered it back then, even if it's surprisingly supernatural for a tacky theme park :P
The shooting range feels like a precursor to the bugfest that is Chronicles’ Red Alert. 😩
Oh HELL yes. I was having a really bad day. Now it's a really bad day but I get to watch a new episode of the goofy Tomb Raider series I like. Thamk.
Aww, I hope this episode made it a tiny bit better then.
Another great episode! But I have to say, this really frustrates me. The idea of a tacky amusement park is a perfect place for Lara to go around. They could have filled it with really easy puzzles that parody difficult puzzles that were done previously in the game. Or it could have housed a really important artefact in the gift shop or a crane game. The idea of Lara going around a tacky themepark for kids is already funny/novel enough, why make it so unbelievable?
Why did they have to make it deadly? This isn't CarnEvil where the gimmick is that you think it's a friendly circus but it's actually twisted and dangerous; it's a game already FILLED with deadly traps. The idea of having a break from that is actually interesting.
I mean, the whole game feels like it's lacks ideas and has an extremely cynical tone (which, I mean considering the circumstances behind it's development is no surprise).
OK, I will stop throwing shade at TR:TLR. I am sure you will probably do some of that yourself if you ever do a sequel to your best TR levels video.
Anyway, for another TR Mysteries may I suggest the "IRIS".
The Iris is the artefact that is in Lara's secret room in her house in Tomb Raider 3. HOWEVER! In TR:TLR, it shows that she never ever got it, because Werner Von Croy was trapped with it in the flashback.
So if TR3 happened before TR:TLR, how the hell did she get it without finding his corpse? And if she did go back to get it, did she know he was alive? That he got out?
This retcon drive me NUTS as a kid, same as with the retcon of Larson and Pierre in your last episode.
Anyway, sorry for the rant!
Short answer: Chronicles explains how she got it. May have even been in the time between TR2 and TR3.

Thank you so much! Yeah, I agree. They really could've done so much more with this place, in hindsight. Like some sort of mine cart/dark ride, and without all the lethal traps, like you say. The theme park level theme was never explored in classic Tomb Raider, besides Egyptian Adventure, so I really think they could have done a lot more with it.
And great suggestion! I might do that. There's a lot to cover on that particular artefact.
The Rome part of Chronicles takes place before TR1
Another great mystery about Egyptian Adventure is: how is a 5 second long tune the best song in the series?
Hahaha! I *think* that's up to debate, though ;)
I think this "park" exists (in the game) also from the ancient period of Egypt (during Cleopatra's time or even earlier) for brave volunteers, who clearly realise how dangerous it would be and that they would die inside, but they don't have a problems with that, because they need adrenaline or do it just for big reward (like a lot of gold/money) - something similar as the death fights at the arena in ancient Greece, for exaple.
Later, (most likely) someone found this place and decided that it would become a very good attraction, without knowing how dangerous is inside. That's his biggest mistake, in my opinion, because he didn't research it carefully, before "open" it as attraction for tourists. Thats why we see the "EGYPTIAN ADVENTURE" logo ON ENGLISH, over the entrance.
Only after that, before from the coutry;the authorities to be allowed for this place to be opened legally, a group of experts explores more in detail it and plays the games and... Die there, because of someones stupidity. (I know, it doesn't sound that possible and realistic as a theory, but...)
And, after that incident, this place is announced for extremely dangeros and forbidden and its closed, also with the warning "DO NOT ENTER!"
And, becouse of a lack of income, there are not enough money for archaeologists and explorers to research this place(even if there are enough money-they are not allowed to do so, becouse of the dangers inside) and for that-this place becomes abandoned forever...
I think every detail inside, even the key in the cage, is a part of the whole game, which Lara finishes successfully.

Excellent theory! In all honesty, this theory makes more sense than mine. I think this theory explains it all. Thank you so much for sharing. I really like the idea, that some opportunistic con man wanted to make some money, by turning an old dangerous tomb of trial area into a tourist attraction, without actually caring to check the place properly beforehand.

I think the place might have been booby trapped by Lara's enemies after it close to try to murder her but even then that is very far-fetched. I never gave that place much thought but it's certainly really weird.
This is a very interesting theory too, which I never thought about. The place could have been tinkered with by thugs, after it shut down. Very good point. Although, installing all those spike traps must've been an incredibly difficult and expensive task.
@@AxMania I agree, that is why I'm not fully on board with my own theory but I just think it is a plausible possibility. I don't see why anyone would design a theme park dedicated to killing tourists, that looked like a place tailor made for Lara to lower her guard and die unexpectedly.

Plot Twist: turns out Egyptian Adventure is a creation of Merasmus the Wizard from Team Fortress 2.
He already built an evil circus before and brought in a bunch of people to get murdered and murder eachother, it's the same trick again !

My personal theory: Set's influence made the toy traps in the park become real. Take into account that the first paranormal manifestations occur very close to the park, more precisely on the coast, and they are skeletal warriors.

Ha and what a theory! Okay so I don't believe it was Jean-Yves (although it would have some weird and hilarious consequences had he ever returned in the games), but it's great how bonkers the TR world is with characters like these, someone who just built a murder park for no obvious reason. Hey, what if it was a normal park that was, uh, adapted by the skeletons running on the coast, to make more friends? :)))
Haha and Charles Kane actually being Jean-Yves, but with a new identity (while everyone still knows it's him though? :D), that's be some hilarious weirdness too!
And that ending, okay I didn't expect the creepiness but good job on that!
I love these videos, great job! Have you ever thought about maybe covering the Black Isle village from Chronicles? I've thought about it before, what it might have been like before, why it became deserted - because of the demons? How exactly did it happen? Why did so many demons appear there (or flock to there?). You have such an eye for detail, I'd love to hear your thoughts! It's just an idea of course, I'm sure you have your own stuff you want to focus on.

I don't know whether I quite believe my own theory either, but it's literally all I can think of, in order to make sense of this place, while also keeping some sort of tie to Lara herself. Haha yeah! Jean-Yves just shows up in Croft Manor and randomly wants to be called Charles Kane from now on, and Winston and Father Dunstan are just like "Erhm... ok... sure".

There used to be a Tomb Raider ride at King's Island in Ohio. It has been closed down and, assumingly, anything Tomb Raider related as been taken away. The theme park has changed hands at various points.
I had no idea, that sounds amazing! Unless people were killed inside that ride as well, of course 😅

I know it's a nitpick at best, but at least you could've used the shotgun with blue shells when you've shot the wooden barrier (you know, the one with the words "No Entry" on it), to make it seem as if Lara absolutely insists on entering the place, even if she's basically putting her life on the line.

It's a very long game, and it gets really confusing later on, because of all the interconnected levels and backtracking.
This is like the giant laser shooting octopus robot in Chronicles. Just hanging out in the middle of a city for anyone to access..
What do you mean? Don't you have a giant laser shooting roman gladiator octopus in your city, or what?
Hey! How about the mystery of the sunken Maria Doria? :) It was very wierd - some of the parts were upside down, but some of them - upright. And the air cavern, where the deck was located, is wierd as well - how could the ship got sunken in a way that one of its part come to be in some sort of a cave with air.
That's a great suggestion, and I actually had plans to do this. I even wanted to make a 3D model that showed how it happened. I might return to the Tomb Raider Mysteries episodes some day, but for now they are on a hiatus. Thank you for your suggestion!

It's also worth noting that Lara has to go through the Egyptian Adventure in order to get the Catacombs key. So whoever designed the park might have wanted to prevent Lara from getting it 🤔🤔

Your theory may not be so far-fetched. I remember Professor Worth's Arthur exhibition in "Tomb Raider Legend" was pretty much one of the most unsafe attractions you could visit with falls being the number one danger. I'm not sure if you could get through that museum with Lara's limited moveset from Tomb Raider 1.
Oh yeah, I hadn't even thought about that. Egyptian Adventure isn't even the only dangerous tourist attraction in the Tomb Raider universe 😅

@@AxMania well another theory I have is that Egyptian adventure was a normal theme park but someone got killed with the rollercoaster and it had to be shut down but the skeleton rework this park to a death park
I don't know if this can be used for another video, or it is another proff against Jean Yves... but why, in the first cutscene we met him, while he talk about how to stop Seth and cook, there is a long shot of a bottle he has in mind?
That bottle it is even framed into the shot at the last moments.

While it's certainly an odd part of the game, I never put much thought into why this place existed, or why it's so deadly. I think I just kinda accepted it for what it was, a bizarre side-quest of sorts, with no real in-game or lore explanation.

Maybe Seth influence slowly transformed the park in a real deathtrap ? I mean you won't tell me a place with as much sightseeing as the Sphinx and the pyramids wouldn't had so many traps around them in normal times.

Actually just played through this section for the first time and got quite annoyed because of something relating to this - I saw the theme park presentation of the area and based on that I assumed it was completely safe in there, meaning that I didn't save as I entered. Then I got instakilled by the spikes in the mirror room and had to play from the start of Alexandria all over again. Kind of annoying how one of the few areas of TLR which is really dense with bs instant death traps is presented in a way that makes the player think it will be harmless.
Ugh, that really sucks... Yeah, this is a very devious place. You don't exactly expect to die around every corner in some quirky little amusement park, do you?

Technically, he's not, but it's the same model (and face) as Jean-Yves. There is an interesting article online about how Core Design was forced to change Jean-Yves appearance and name. So technically, he is ;)
