    Hi Chris...
I just found this about Sterling Moss's BGS861A 1963 MGB
. "BGS was totally rebuilt from the shell up for use by Malcolm Gammons and Glen Jarvis in the 1989 event. The car performed faultlessly and they took a class win and 15th overall - the best standard car by miles, winning the team award for MG with Stirling Moss and Ron Gammons. In 1990 the car was fully modified to FIA standards, bored out to 1840cc with Webber 45DCOE carburation to provide 130bhp, via a close ratio gear box and Quaife Limited Slip Diff. In this (its current) specification, BGS was driven to seventh place by Rally legend, Roger Clark, with Tony Masson on ‘the clocks’ in the 1990 Pirelli Classic Marathon. For 1992 it was back to the Classic Marathon, this time sponsored by Mitsubishi, the crew being Sir Stirling Moss and Zoe Heritage. The pair had run a big Healey in the 1991 event but decided to go back to an MGB for 92, Stirling putting BGS through its paces to finish another faultless performance in seventh place"
    FYI
    Jeff

My 1962 MG MIdget Mk I had the "standard" hood/top which stored in the boot/trunk along with its frame and side curtains. There were many times that I had to pull over, remove everything and install them because of oncoming rain. I believe I could do it faster than your permanently attached frame and top.
Love the car!!!!! BMC rules and BLMC drools.

Only just seen this, apologies. Yeah I have been in that situation a fair few times myself! If it was raining heavily I'm sure that would have provided ample motivation to speed up 🙂.

@@CharltonsClassics The fastest I ever had to do it was when I was crossing the Florida Everglades in 1970 with a date in my Midget Mk I (aka Sprite Mk II). I have to admit that I was trying to impress her more than just trying to keep her dry. This was probably my personal best time at about 3 minutes. When she asked how I was able to do it so fast, I replied, "Practice, lots and lots of practice."
The storms in the Everglades were just like driving through a car wash. They usually came fast and left fast.

@NAda hi, as tempting as that conversion is please BEWARE it rarely ends up proper and is a massive job . as a MG shop owner I've seen many droopy frt ends, they look awful. If you get the rubber bumpers body colour matched they somewhat "disappear" ... then lower the car, fit wider rims/tyres and you have a fine MGB!

Just came back to see the car again, beautiful. You and I seem to be in the minority of those who like mudflaps.
I have a question about the Peter Burgess cylinder head. I have been conversing with him ( via e mail) about getting one of his cylinder heads. You mentioned stage 2. Is this intended for basically stock engines with replacement free flow exhaust and a "hot street cam" ? Is there a noticeable difference in performance.
The only modification to my engine from stock is a "hot street cam". Otherwise stock with a Moss TT exhaust system and electronic ignition. Would the stage 2 be suitable for this set up?
Next week I will be installing a fresh gearbox and clutch. I have been putting this off. The previous owner managed to damage first and reverse in this 3 synchro box.
I will also be attending to some engine oil leaks and install some fresh motor mounts, an upgraded 3/4" sway bar
and some other goodies to include replacing both front and rear shocks and suspension bushings.
I'll be removing the downdraft WEBER (also installed by the PO) and putting on the proper SUs, which I have just rebuilt including throttle shaft bushings. New heat shield etc.
This is my second MGB, sold my 1964 about 2 years ago, missed it so much I bought this 1963.
    Prior I have owned a 46 TC, 50 TD, 53 TD Mk II, 56 MGA, 1969 MGC GT, a 1959 Fairthorpe Electron Climax, 5 Land Rovers 1958-1974, 1980 SD 1, several Morris Minors, 4 Thames vans, 1954 Oxford, 1960 Oxford, 58 Sprite.
Can't have too many Brit cars.

    • @CharltonsClassics
      @CharltonsClassics  2 года назад

Hi Jeff, thanks for the comments there. Yes I don’t see too many with mudflaps, but it’s a sickening feeling hearing stones bounce down the side of the body, so always worth adding them in my opinion.
As for for the Peter Burgess head, yes that’s my understanding. Stage 2 is a good setup for fast road use. I have Maniflow headers, piper 270 cam & K&N filters. Combined together the car runs at about 130bhp at the crank, so about 30% more than standard and quite a noticeable power difference. Plenty for day to day driving.
Whilst I’m no expert, I would think that a stage 2 would be suitable for your car, and it may be worth considering free flow headers too.
Sounds like you will have plenty on your hands with the restoration. Hope it all goes well 😊
I will be doing another video covering specifically the engine bay, as I have been informed by my grandad that I missed some of the best bits off haha.
      All the best Jeff.
Ps, nice car collection over the years!

@@CharltonsClassics Thanks for the reply Chris.
I have "spoken" via e mail with Peter Burgess and I think I'll propose a stage 2 to him and see what he thinks.
Incidentally, Moss motors compared their TT Stainless headers with the factory stock header and reported there was virtually no difference.
I'll explore other headers and see what difference they will make.. I'll check on Maniflow.
PS in my storage I have for MGBs..
4 engines (2 Gs and two Vs) 7 gearboxes which included my newly rebuilt 63 and a later 4 synchro O drive) extra heads rebuilt but not ported (yet), gauges, vintage wooden gear knobs, NOS Grilles and radiators on an on. , about 8-10 sets of carbs , 5 drive shafts, lots of chrome bits, new and used calipers, 2 original radios, Lucas for and driving lamps, several ashtrays, on and on. Time to put some of these to use, Oh and though my car is a solid wheel car I have 2 or three sets of wire wheels.
PS I just had a birthday lunch and party with my 100 yr old friend Geoff Green from whom I bought my first MG in 1964 the TD MK II.
