This was enormously helpful. I bought a similar model a few months back (Acer Aspire XC 1660g-UW93 to be specific) and due to how physically identical these two models are, I now have an idea of how I can go about upgrading mine (adding a janky intake fan will be my first big step :) ).
I bought the i5 8400 version of this recently, also used, but like new. It came with 16GB RAM, a brand new Crucial 256GB SSD and built in DVD Recorder Drive. It also had the original Acer wireless keyboard & mouse included. I also paid £150. I've added a 2TB HDD in that cage and moved the SSD under the cage. I'll probably add an M.2 at some stage too. It works really well and performance is surprisingly good. I'm not a gamer, so not worried about a video card. The CPU generally runs at under 40 degrees, and the only thing that warms it up a bit is rendering videos in Kdenlive. I've checked the power consumption and it's usually well under 80W.
Very useful! That is why desktops are better than laptops, there is always a lot you can upgrade unlike laptops where you can only upgrade certain bits. Keep up the good work!
Hi Brian, love the vids, keep ‘em coming. I have a very similar Acer, an XC600 which I’ve had for over 8 years. About 4 years ago I installed a Crucial SSD and doubled the RAM. It’s running Windows 10 well and for my purposes (no gaming) I’m perfectly happy with it and have no intentions to upgrade any time soon.
Just picked this up myself and I found this video super helpful! its a nice little productivity machine for sure. I wouldn't mind doing for very light retro gaming, but I'm totally new to PC, so the GPU suggestion and tutorial was extremely helpful.
This looks very familiar. I have the Acer I5 10,400 that came with 12 gb of ram. Added two 16 gig, ddr4 sticks and an Invidia 1030 gpu - passively cooled. I don't really play games outside of Farm Town, so it is completely adequate for everyday tasks, Windows updates, etc. Purchased the computer NEW from Amazon for $700 in 2020. Been very pleased with the performance.
To overcome the power supply issues, I have transplanted the system to a standard case which will take a standard power supply. You can get a decent ish case for thirty quid.

Good video man! :) any chance you could give me a recommendation for my pc. I have a 2021 acer aspire XC-1660g. looking to upgrade the graphics card. I'm in the US by the way. Thanks for reading.
My recent purchase of a now 4 year old machine did not have CPU Turbo Boost, it appeared to be disabled by default. Once Turbo Boost was functioning there was a real problem with overheating of the CPU and the M.2 SATA, this is without a GPU added. Since I don't have a suitable fan to add, I have bought 2 small 40mm fans to add to the rear case vents to act as extracts and hopefully help keep the heat from the CPU away from the other components. I may add a funnel above the CPU to ensure the air used is from outside the case rather than recirculated. The fan mounted in the removable side needs the lead disconnected every time the side is removed, which would be a bit of a fiddle.
Important question will all of these upgrades work Acer Aspire XC-830-UW91 Celeron J4125D 2.0GHz 4GB RAm as this one has a different fan and only 4gb ram
have this type of acer model but is packing a slightly faster much newer model with a 10th gen i3 and a generous 300 watt power supply it runs windows 11 fine on 1080p but it struggles on 1440p for some reason i suspect the little uhd 630 in the cpu wasn't made for any higher resolution then 1080p (even with the support for 4k at 30hz) i wanna know if adding a intel arc a310 ($99) would be a good idea or a rtx 3050 6gb since its $70-80 more and would let me play some games. both have support for SFF desktops and i wanna know which one is a better buy
now can I just add the graphics card without the other upgrades or do i need the other upgrades to use this graphics card and with this graphics card will i be able to play red dead redemption 2 on it?
