This is the only acceptable way for states to change their flag. If citizens genuinely want a new flag and there is grassroots support for the new design, that is fantastic. But just changing every state because a random pamphlet says flags should never have words or more than 3 colours, etc, is really trampling on historical symbology for the sake of modern taste. The "seal on blue" flags are usually battle flags from the US's fight to maintain the Union during the Civil War, which is a very relevant symbol considering the current state of politics.

It's not really particularly expensive, it just requires the standard to be changed. It's one of the reasons why I'm sort of surprised so many state license plates remain so boring. Back in the '80s and earlier having ones that were mostly a solid color with a different color for the writing made sense, these days, it doesn't really make much difference if it's a flat background or a prettier pattern.

Great question! According to David Martucci: “The two missing branches likely refer to the two major territories that were once a part of Maine: New Hampshire, separated from Maine in 1629; and Northern Madawaska, yielded to Canada as a result of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842.”

The proposed Pine tree flag, doesn't have the two cut off branches, like the original did. That should be rectified before the flag is unveiled.

If going back to something close to an original design I agree let voters decide which flag they prefer. Utah no idea of the state of the state of Utah or if i prefer their current flag or their old design. Minnesota The old flag was just fine and there was much bigger issues than the state flag and state seal.

I like the idea of the tree and star but floating objects on a blank background are a weak design that will easily be got wrong in reproduction in terms of distance, size, scale and proportion. Really they should be anchored within a bolder graphic background design, maybe such as 2 broad stripes, the horizontal midpoint line defining the ratio of the two elements. . There’s a reason why countries adopt bold colours for flags and not buff, it’s very hard to reproduce accurately and it’s a recessive colour, your flag will disappear in a line up. The USA adopted, or rather kept, the colours of the British Union Jack, a graphic design that remains one of the best designs ever, working in mono as well as color, as do the Stars and Stripes. Maine is an historic state, it shouldn’t have a flag that looks like it came out of a 4 years old’s coloring book. This one looks like a Christmas card more than a flag. I do like it, but I’d tweak it, and I’d add back in the 2 cut off branches and make the roots slightly more interesting.

Is this literally on the top of our to do list here in maine right now!? Changing the flag vs so many other serious issues we actually have at hand? Like schools, roads, high cost of living vs low paying jobs for locals, the list goes on and on. Also lest we forget we would have to repaint every single state vehicle purchase new flags everywhere etc. this is ridiculous

If the flag has any significance at all, changing it is wrong. Flag design specifics always just come down to options. So we might as well just picked a new one every year if you’re gonna change it. At some point it stops representing the state and starts representing change in general

@PeruvianPotato it was also a Massachusetts thing but Maine was at one time a part Massachusetts. Regiments recruited from the area that is Maine flew the flag during the Revolution and I think it's also popular at least at one time throughout New England. I'm pretty sure some units in the Maine National Guard still use it. Either way the resemblance is undeniable. Your not wrong though
