Some others could sing it beautifully... But for me at least it's only Callas who conveys every single time the sense that this is a prayer, not just a beautiful melody. Thank you for sharing!

Callas middle voice was COLOSSAL before she lost weight. Only Tebaldi and Flagstad could compare to her when it comes to easiness, size, and beauty when it comes to middle voice. But on top of that she could sing the most difficult coloratura passages like no one could.

Legato phrases that are incredibly supported through the most difficult ebbs and flow of this virtuoso aria. Full open, gargantuan middle voice with the most musical and accurate agility possible.

1:53 the agility of vocalization as opposed to the immense weight of the Voice... reminded me the comment of a "heavy wheeler taking turns as a Ferrari".. she executes the vocalizations so fast..

Me too. Too much high without strength in the middle and lower seems unbalanced to me and also lacking in strength and passion. I often prefer Mezzo, but Callas had it ALL and refined her extraordinary instrument and technique to perfection through intense study and grueling work. There is no one like her.

I like her from before 1954 most, but there is not too much around. The force of her voice and her flexibility are obvious to even a naive listener like me.
I like Jessey Norman as well, but I have otherwise no knowledge about good opera singing. Usually I'm mostly into rock music, just having a fascination for beautiful voices and good singing, too.
If you compare Mrs. Callas with contemporary sopranos, from you expert opinion, where are they now?

I prefer her 1955 Norma to ALL but my main aim in this channel as well as my presence in youtube regarding Callas was always to show the vocal phenomenon she was in her early, healthy years, something that people seem to forget because her later recordings have better sound (but she is in vocal decline)

    • @jeanfourneau4411

I fully agree , but sometimes I am rather lost : I much prefer her (studio) version of Lucia , directed by Serafin in 1953 to the 1955 (live) one directed by von Karajan and , which according to the legend/:history, she herself placed highest ???
And by the way I am sorry to say so but her Farewell tournee (especially the 1973 performance in London) was very touching , but vocally an utter disaster ! Only my own personal feeling of course .
