  • Traditionellt midsommarfirande trots något kylig sommardag, ca 12 C, och tidvis regnig. Dock uppehåll under midsommardansen! Dansen runt midsommarstången är en härlig tradition som samlar både gammal och ung, vilket videon visar.
This video shows our Midsummer tradition in Medevi Brunn, Motala, Sweden. You will see our tradition of erecting the midsummer pole -‘midsommarstången’. Then we sang our national anthem, “Du gamla du fria”. Then will this video show some of our traditional ring dances based of following songs: “Vi gå över dagstänkta berg”, ”Jänta och jag”, ”Räven raskar över isen med gubbarnas visa, grin Olles visa, skatt Olles visa”, ”Sju vackra flickor i en ring”, ”Sju vackra gossar i en ring” and finaly the very end of ”Raketen”. Of course we also were dancing to ”Små grodorna” and other tradional songs.
In Sweden the maypole is erected at Midsummer Eve and is called a midsummer pole -‘midsommarstång’. But sometimes we also call it majstång, were the word maj refers to the old Swedish word maja. The word maja means to decorate with green leaves and flowers and not the month of May.
The Swedish traditions of Midsummer vary locally, but the traditional ring dance is common in all of Sweden. It says that it has to be six men to erect the pole. When the pole is erected the ring dances start in form of alternating dancing and making movements and gestures based on the songs.
