- The first time I ever heard the term "families downsizing" was this past July during an interview with the Nevada Partnership Of Homeless Youth [nphy.org] (watch the interview here ustream.tv/recorded/1825341 ). Larry Lovelett, Homeless Youth Transition Specialist, said this was currently their biggest challenge. He explained that since Nevada has been hit hard by the failing economy, families are selling their large homes and moving into smaller, more affordable apartments. But to fit into these apartments? Well, many families have no choice but to make their older children move out.
The idea of downsizing families boggled my mind - I just didn't see how it was possible for a family to kick out one of their kids. But then I met Dawn and her son Ryle at a rotating shelter [mcrest.org] near Detroit, Michigan. Just two days before this interview, Dawns mom dropped her off at the shelter.
Nevada isn't the only community grappling with downsizing families. Last week, I interviewed Jack Gonzalez at the Los Angeles Youth Network [layn.org], who also talked about how these families are affecting his organization. (That interview can be found here ustream.tv/recorded/2737926)
It's incredibly sad the lengths some families must go to in order to survive during these rough economic times. Maybe your family will never be forced to "downsize" in order to stay housed, but I hope that Dawns story puts a face to this unfortunate phenomenon.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
Shes only a kid but homeless..its shocking to see..and that her mother would drop her off at a homeless shelter is disgusting
Same, but mine kicked me out at 7.
@@greysonG10 what? I’m so sorry
Unbelievable What Mother could do this to a daughter &,small grandchild. People like this do not deserve to have children if they are this cold hearted !
I would love an update here! I have a feeling she came out this horrible situation and would love to know it❤️
I'm heartbroken for the baby...and where's the father of this child..??
When theyre just kids the parents have a responsibility, they had them, thats part of the deal..if you cant handle it dont have kids...to drop your kid off so your boyfriend can move in is nothing short of sick...
I fully agree Wow putting a boyfriend ahead of your own flesh & blood is Pathetic Hopefully Karma comes around to this poor excuse of a mother
I would give anything to have a daughter let alone a daughter and a grandchild. It truly sickens me to think her very own mother would drop her and her infant son off at a shelter. How absolutely cruel and horrible is that? Shit like this makes me think that humanity has sunken into the abyss.
You will be a better mother to your child NO DOUBT! God bless and be safe.
Mom was a bad mother chose the boyfriend. What a joke.
Yeah totally not the girls fault for not being mature enough to provide for her own child.
Any update on this young lady and her 10 year old?
Baby would be ten years old by now. My hope is that she’s on her feet, working a job she loves and that Riley is excited about starting 5th grade. Any update?
Bless them
I like her smile =D
u have to have dreams. ur dreams are ur biggest motivators.
Where's the baby's father in all of this????
UPDATES???
Poor girl omg
She is beautiful i hope she finds a proper man
What is a "rotating" homeless shelter?
Mary Sueper as in you rotate in and out. It's not "permanent"
Her mother doesn't deserve to be called Mom, she is an example of an epic fail.
Yooooo momma left you at a shelter cause of her BOYYYYYFRIENDDD
Where’s the father??
Long gone most likely , if she knows who the father even is
She was stumped by the 3-wishes question 😐
Wow, abandoned by her own mother for her boyfriend. Some families just make me laugh. I hope she makes a success of her life for her daughter and that her mother never has to rely on her one day.
Why have a kid if you are already living in poverty and don't have a stable place to live?
She should probably change her name to Dusk.
Welfare need to take that baby off her. Deadbeat mom right there
That's right, be as callous as you can from your very sheltered spot in life.
mary ellwood she should think of the baby! That's no life for a baby! Think of the child first!
That mother loves that child, it is not her fault her mother has decided to choose her boyfriend over her own daughter, and tell her there's no room for her.... more than anything in this world, a child needs a mother that loves them, if welfare take her baby, that child will be on an endless round and at the mercy of foster carers. If anything, welfare should be helping a mother like this and finding her a home, for her and her child. That would be putting the child first.
what gives u the right to slap labels on people like that? go to hell.
Austin Powers fuck you too
