- Sig Hansen, the captain of the Northwestern, relies on his brother Edgar to help him steer the boat throughout the king crab season. But when Edgar confesses to having serious issues with his back, Sig wonders if this might be his brother's last season at sea.

Back pain is no joke. Being disabled since 97 after being hit by a tractor trailer. The pain brings you to not just your knees but to tears .
Like severe toothache after one of your teeth rots away.

Woke up on the floor of my mini van. Felt a huge hot rush through my body. Pulled myself on to my seat and felt tingling. In my arms and neck. Fire and rescue came. Brought me hospital. Broken neck. Had surgery. Doble fusion in my neck. Now I live with 7 pieces of titanium in my neck. Been disabled since. I get around still but live with constant pain. Sux.
No man can do that type of work for decades without destroying his body. Unless that man is Freddie. Those Samoans are a different breed.
Smoke a pack of cigarettes a day every day...not enough sleep for decades....
unhealthy diet for years...alcohol etc. Yeah after 20 or 30 years of this you're very lucky to still be alive.

My brother would say the same thing. If I told him my back hurt before going he would throw a fit. If I told him my back hurt while working he would throw a fit. He would complain regardless.
I’ve had a lower back injury for years and my brother still gives me crap for it. I’ve had surgery and it still hasn’t helped. It’s so painful, it makes you want to off yourself. Back pain isn’t a joke… family though… never believes it’s real.

This is going to be a general advice, but for my lower back pain, which left me crawling 3 days on the floor, water exercise has been the salvation. I know you have it much worse, but maybe it can be something that helps you. Exercising in warm water 1-2 hours 3 times a week strengthens every muscle group that you are able to work out and you will notice a difference. It can help relieve some of the pain.
Edgar was in a no win situation. Maybe he should have said something sooner but he was trying to tough it out. He's that dedicated.

If I was ever to be out at sea I would wish I had a captain like Sig. Amazing guy every time something bad comes up.

This is the exact reason why I got out of delivering dry wall. I did it for 16 years. My elbows back knees and shoulders are already wrecked and I'm only 32. Now I drive a garbage truck and feel a million times better.
I grew up doing tile, now I'm 31 and I creak and pop like a haunted house.
Now I do small engine repair and I don't have to soak in a tub at the end of the day.
Edgar always been a beast of a human.

My friend worked boats for 12 years and got tore up. This is hard work and it rips you up. Back pain is a beast.
Sig is a good man and a one of the best captain an inspiration to few or many fisherman out there.Trying to make a living for their love one's waiting at home he's family is very lucky to have him around still protecting he's family and loved them so much ❤

Back pain will actually make you see stars in your eyes. Yes, it can get that severe, and I thought that was a cartoon thing until it happened to me.
I've had back pain so bad I've seen little black strings or what looks like little short black strings of spaghetti in the same way you see stars. But yes you are right about that....I've seen the stars too but the strings when it's really bad.

@Catch your goals I dont know what that connection is between the nerves and eyes. When I was in my 20's I use to get ocular migraines. If I was driving, I would have to pull over until they cleared up. They were not really painful as I remember but its not like I called my boss and said I cant come to work this season. These guys are tough and will play through bad backs, joints and everything else. I have never understood why Sig hates Edgar so much. But then again I think Sig hates pretty much everybody.

He was hurting before he showed up. He signed the contract, he breached his contract for greed . Any time you with hold information about your well being you are putting people and lives at risk. If you are part of a team you can make the team weaker.

This is not recently. I hope Edgar is doing ok in 2022. I know he got in some bad trouble.
The worse back pain I had was from kidney stones and man the only place I was comfortable would be the floor while in tears.
I broke 3 ribs in my back, and 2 in the front, and still drove with a collapsed lung. Took a day off after 2 weeks of short breath when I caught my breath and started coughing up blood chunks while my lung pumped back up.

And even when they do, such as in Edgar's case, he's still thinking of their best interest and going to send him to a doctor to give him the medical care he needs... I have a herniated disc in my lower back that gives me trouble on occasion. When it’s bad the sciatica pain cause me to be unable to walk or use much of my left leg.
My god they are the toughest men i no ,zig is a worrier when it comes to family, and crew he is just disappointed that edgar did not keep him informed, edgar is one hel of a worker 😢

My God, I lived in Florida for a couple decades and the crab that was brought to restaurants was gaint amd sweet tasting. Expensive to buy/eat, but I never got tired of it. I almost wish I was an Alaskan King Crab fisherman just to enjoy eating crab. It’s so good, I almost would work just to eat the crab for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Can’t imagine how great tasting the Alaskan crab can be lol😄

I fear a bad back or knees. Once they're injured it's down for. You can take pain pills but it does more damage because you don't really feel the even more damage you're doing.

I got severe whiplash and pinched both nerves in my right arm! It was the most painful thing I've ever felt and I've broken a femor! To this day I still suffer with it and the doctor's say they are going to have to fuse my spine with a rod to fix it!

This show is still on. Who would of thought.
Been out of work for a year now...worked in a cemetery....the constant lifting and shoveling and grinding...one day my neck shoulder and trap area went completely numb and I couldn't lift my arm. Now a year later and a uear of physical therapy and epidurals...I have destroyed nerves and tissue damage and I know have to settle and leave my job. It's just to physically demanding on my body. Spent last 20 years doing physical labor and my body is just giving out. I gotta re evaluate my whole life and find something to do.

I am a bit confused of how people don't understand the concept of Sigs words. He is not blaming Edgar for his back pain, he is asking why he is not informed of it. I am sure Edgar before the start of the season thought it will get better but it didn't and it is not like Sig is forcing him to work through his back issues. Quite the opposite...

I came a gnats hair from rupturing a disc once. Now my right leg can randomly flare up and go to fire and numbness. It sucks but its life. If you cant do the job, dont do the job.
Its hard to do anything with bad back pain, much less do what these dudes do.

Anyone out there ever had radicular pain!? I have. The toughest humans in the World cannot bear this kind of pain and function! Man up, stop the pills and get an MRI and get the disc extrusion surgically removed. 3 mos later, you’ve recovered and go back to work. Been there, done that! Hooray for the blade, or as we doctors say, sometimes, to cut is to cure!!! Bob Pills are a 1 way street!

Welcome to the crabbing industry that's what the old timers do in there eyes you break them down build them up Edgar's drug abuse through the years and leaving sig hanging at times over the years made there relationship that way it was sig started giving in and trusting Edgar but old habits of Edgar's started back up now he's off the show completely

Edgar went down those stairs like a man that doesn’t have back pain. I’ve felt back pain. You wouldn’t go down stairs like that if you were in so much pain that you couldn’t work. I think something else is going on with Edgar. Maybe an addiction? Maybe something else.

He definitely should see a chiropractor my father was debilitated with a pinched nerve he could barely move and ate so many ibuprofen he was sick, 3 visits to the chiropractor and he was walking and standing with ease sometimes you're so out of alignment you compound even the slightest injury
It doesn’t work for everyone. Some people are so far gone, it’s like as soon as you get it in place, you move and it’s out.
I like Sig but his treatment of his brother seem out of line or at least the way he was portrayed on the show
