Over 10 years on, this is still awkward to watch. I feel Stewart initiates it all and gets personal. Then Corden switches to a hard man persona and gets in Stewart's face. Overall they both made themselves look nasty and passive aggressive. I'm sure they both regret this, as no one likes the world to watch when the mask slips.
I love Patrick Stewart, I don't really know/care about Corden. But when Picard turns and goes "You wanna hear another one?". And hypes up the crowd. With this smirk on his face like "im gonna put this young punk in his place 😏" and then says the cringiest, nonsensical fat joke about the Jonas Brothers? And no one makes a sound... Dude I spit out my drink! Such an old guy move I love it.
"When the mask slips" is such a drama queen black-and-white way of thinking. If somebody's not angry 99% of the time and angry 1% of the time, that 1% doesn't magically represent "the REAL them." That's some infantile storytelling nonsense you have confused with real human emotion. Stewart felt insulted by Corden's conduct all night, so he insulted Corden back. None of that requires a "mask slipping" like you did some investigative journalism.
That's why its not funny. You didn't even get it. You're laughing because you like Sir Pat. I like him, but I'm not dull enough to laugh at something that isn't funny just because of the person who said it.
I find it telling that people forgive all kinds of bad behavior from celebrities they like, but somehow James Corden having a human reaction to be being publicly FAT-SHAMED is seen as unforgivable. The way people have piled on to attack him makes me sad about humanity.
It's about trust. Patrick Stuart has never given most people any cause to doubt his character, so when he decides to make a public issue of something, people trust that however uncomfortable, maybe private resolutions have been tried and failed. On the other hand, James Cordon has a well documented reputation for narcissism and vindictive cruelty and portrays himself as shallow and untrustworthy.
The whole thing was embarrassing for everyone involved. I think there's a time & a place, and it wasn't appropriate for Patrick to say it on stage in front of everyone.

This was obviously an informal award show and Patrick was roasting Corden a little bit about his job as a host. It was very soft, but Corden couldn't take it. Then he started acting all hard up in Stewart's face. That was hard to watch. James Corden has major punch face and I don't know how Patrick held back. It obviously threw Patrick off his game. Anyway, James Corden is absolutely awful.

"After that apology, it thought it would be poignant to make a terrible joke thus highlighting that I'm an actor and you're a "comedian", and that sometimes people should stick to their strengths."
I don't care for James Corden, but Patrick Stewart lacked class and showed poor judgement here. Perhaps he thought Corden was making faces behind his back by the way the audience was laughing.
Attacking someone on professionalism by being thunderously unprofessional in front of a room full of people. Chiding Corden for poor stage manner is one thing, as is finding him unfunny, attempting to shame and humiliate him with personal jibes is another.
None of this really matters, sometimes things slip from our mouths that shouldnt have. What was really unsettling, was Stewarts' complete inability to improvise on the situation and save face graciously. This is a universally revered classical actor with several decades of stage experience and he just laid there, gobsmacked, on the verge of crying almost. I mean, just laugh it off, hug the guy and give him a kiss, how difficult was that.

Nah Stewart wanted to expose the real him.
I love Patrick Stewart, I don't really know/care about Corden. But when Picard turns and goes "You wanna hear another one?". And hypes up the crowd. @@Space_Ghost_Hunter Earlier at the show Corden joked about fancying one of the Jonas brothers
Stewart wasn’t being passive though. He was straight to the point
While I think Stewart should’ve handled this better, the way Corden responded is really telling.
"If you like the Jonas Brothers, cover your belly." sounds Shakespearean in that voice. What a mess haha
The whole thing was embarrassing for everyone involved. I think there's a time & a place, and it wasn't appropriate for Patrick to say it on stage in front of everyone.
