I've watched this production at least 5 times and I still can't take my eyes off her in this final scene... mindblowing. She is the epitome of the ideal singing actress-- amazing stagecraft and unparalleled vocal skill. Even though it's dubbed, you can tell she's still actually singing during the filming.

I have seen a number of performances of Salomé and that is my absolute favorite.
Everything was just perfect about this set. The set, the costuming and the singing. And no one on or off camera has acted a better Salomé than Stratus. She is what I imagined Salomé to be. Totally demented. Yet pitiful and terrifying at the same time.

One of the greatest opera performances on screen ever. Bravo

The finale scared the shot out of me when I was in my teens. She almost thrust that head up her free. The ending was brilliant and have such a huge impact on the landscape of opera.

Magnífica. Uma interpretação de arrepiar. Todas as intenções, as expressões e os pianíssimos... Absolutamente maravilhosa. A Salomé perfeita.

I saw this performed live a few years ago and the ending was one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. Good music.

The way her voice breaks during "Give me the head of Jokanaan..." Just too disturbing for words!

@YettiYogiBear Yeah, there is something profoundly scary in how this awesome and beautiful music transcends everything and insists on possessing our souls. Just like Salome, herself, if you think about it. Theresa Stratas' work in the movie "Salome" is generally regarded as the greatest filmed opera performance. The only other one I can think of that comes close is Leonie Rysanek in "Elektra."

Heh-heh, and people think opera is boring. You won't see beautiful, insane women singing to the severed heads of dead prophets on Monday Night Football or Glee, that's for goddamn sure.
Thank you for sharing this with us!

Remember, this spoiled girl has NEVER been refused anything in her life. As she reminds us, she is the Princess of Judea! Then comes along the one thing in her life that she wants above everything else and never had. Nothing else comes close.
Then, that thing slams the door on her, but good! Niemals!, he says. With such frustration and rejection, she flips...goes pscyho. It's happened to others.

"Well, let me tell you there are not enough dead men" makes you wonder what she would have done is she had survived...

It's a shame that Ms.Stratas didn't actually have the vocal power to perform this role because she would have set the bar for who Salome is. Nillson and a few others may sing it better but none of them have acted Salome with the same realism passion and terror that Stratas did.
Look at her face at the very beginning. It's so sinister. The way she sounds at :30 when she ask for Jokanaan;s head is just disturbing, And those faces she makes at 1:07-1:16 are sick and terrifying. Stratas was Salome.

The recording does her justice... but live... no the vocal strength needed for this role she does not have. Stratas is good in many things, but the vocal power needed to ride over the orchestra.. no.

The weak link is Herod, completely expressionless, especially considering this isn't even live theater. Excellent otherwise.

LOL! You know what? I guess you are right. Have never really liked the abuse of that word, but in this case, I guess it is appropriate. I don't really have a sensitive disposition, just to mention that.

@vocalpianist I don't think that even during her heavy flow days, Turandot could amount to half the bitchiness Salome possesses.

Salome is easily the most decadent opera---who would have thought 'family man' Strauss would have evily brought it to life?! But just try to look away!! Stratas is her usual divine self.

I am sorry, but I live in this world of serious art (am playing Salome with SF Opera in October). By any definition I can think of, any woman that convinces someone to kill someone else because she was rejected is both crazy and a bitch. Sorry for your sensitive disposition.

Tenia que ser una falta conocedora del arte y de una bocota tan vulgar para tratar asi a otra mujer que ha interpretado una de las mejores Salome como Teresa Stratas

  • @Salomes7Veils
    @Salomes7Veils 15 лет назад

I totally agree that this is exciting high drama, but do you really have to write bitch? Language like that doesn't belong in the world of serious art, maybe on the comments page of a rap/r&b/hiphop tune, but not here...

latinfreestylesoulvinyl This is some of the finest singing on record. Bright doesn’t mean too light...that’s the damn problem with all the “Wagnerians” today, they sing in their damn throat.
