To be clear, all of the trains physically fit the tunnels, they are just not authorised to go in during normal operations. Designing the tunnel in such a way to allow all trains to use it in normal operations would require far more complex platform screen doors, and would either require older block signals to be installed in the tunnel, which would severely limit the capacity of the tunnel, or retrofit all older trains with high capacity signilling, which would include an astronomical cost. Essentialy, trying to allow all trains to use the metro would both add significantly to the cost of the project (in the range of hundreds of millions to billions of dollars) and significantly limit the usefulness of the tunnel.

Why is everyone making a huge deal out of this all of a sudden? It's been in the plans since day one of the Metro Tunnel that only HCMT trains will go into the tunnel. The disadvantage is that it decreases flexibility, the advantage is that it means the new trains and the metro tunnel don't need to be confined by the antiquated design of the 150 year old train network we have. Firstly: Platform Screen Doors wouldn't work with our other trains. The Comeng's, Siemens, X'trapolis and HCMT trains all have different door arrangements that don't line up with each other. Therefore if we want Platform screen doors, then we can only pick one train for the doors to line up with. Secondly: Signalling. Our network has been using Automatic Block Signalling for over a century. It was decided to use the Modern CBTC signalling instead (What the government likes to call "High Capacity Signalling") to increase capacity. It would be very difficult and expensive to refit all the Siemens and X'trapolis trains with CBTC and basically impossible to refit the 50 year old Comeng's with CTBC. Thirdly: The HCMT's can't go anywhere else in the network because they are too long. The Pakenham/Cranbourne/Sunbury lines have all been modified to support the 7-10 Carriage HCMT's. Whereas the rest of the network only support up to 6-Carriage trains. It was a deliberate decision to design a dedicated train fleet for the Metro Tunnel so that the new tunnel and new trains can be designed using modern technology without needing to confine to the rest of our ancient train network. Sacrificing Flexibility gives us more Capacity. Just like how the new Sydney Metro wasn't designed with the old double decker trains in mind. These journalists that know nothing about trains or railways found some random thing to clamp onto and start making outrage about. Instead how about asking anyone who knows something about how trains work or read the Business Case for the Metro Tunnel which outlined exactly why they decided not to support other train types.
Why did we need platform screen doors? We have managed quite well without them before this. There are may major systems in the world that work quite well without them. Without them we could run any train type on the line. Then they opt for an orphan signaling system just for this line, when the trains still have to run on lines that are not equipped with that system to get to this line. Also without this signaling system we could run any train type on the line. As for building HCMT that are limited as to where they can run, did it never occur to the government to simply run more standard trains? Then to build this line with no direct interchange with any other city stations, including Southern Cross. It just beggars belief.
@smedleyfarnsworth263 PSD's increase safety, there have been a few incidents with people falling on tracks and the trespassers that we often get. If you don't think it's worth it, fair enough. The HCMT's can use both the old ABS and new CBTC signalling. CBTC is only active between West Footscray and Clayton (via metro tunnel) so outside of that they still use the old signalling system. And other trains will never need to run into the metro tunnel. The 70 HCMT's are more then enough for the Pakenham/Cranbourne/Sunbury lines, when it is time to replace them then we will design a train that can run into the metro tunnel. And if a freight train or out of service train needs to get from Sunbury to Pakenham, they will still be able to take the route via Flinders Street. The X'traplis 2.0 is the solution to "more standard trains" as its job will be to replace Comeng's on the Cragieburn/Upfield/Frankston lines. Also not all of our trains can run anywhere, the X'trapolis 1.0 cannot run passengers on Cragieburn/Upfield/Pakenham/Cranbourne/Sandringham. The Siemens cannot run passengers on any lines going through Burnley. As a side note, the HCMT's can be reduced to 6-Carriage sets so that they can fit on other lines. However the government decided on X'trapolis 2.0 instead to keep the Ballarat Train Factory which builds them open, as Alstom probably threatened to close shop if they didn't get a new order The "no direct interchange" is just false Town Hall Station directly interchanges with Flinders Street. State Library station directly interchanges with Melbourne Central station. They have different names because Metro Trains Melbourne and the 000 responders wanted them to be easily distinguishable.
Incredibly silly take - "Bascially none of your trains" actually meaning all the 70 new ones built for this purpose, and the only type which will operate on the line for the next 40 years? Gotcha...
Shouldn't the introduction story read.............. that five out of six Melbourne train sets will be unable to use the new Metro Tunnel. The reason................ The safety door barriers at each Metro Tunnel station are only designed for use by High-Capacity trains, which comprise just 65 of Melbourne's 460 train sets. Using the New Metro is ruled out for 85% of Vctoria's rolling stock
Its not a discovery. It was known form the beggining and the hit up is wrongly based. The metro tunnel was the first step toward a metro system with gated platforms. The new HCMT trains are made for this and of course the only ones that can use these platforms. Unfortunately with so much lagacy infrastructure it is imossible to have a sudden and extensive cut over. So a politcial beat up in this case based on poor understanding.
I despise the Victorian government as much as anyone does but development of the HCMT trains that will use the tunnel went hand in hand with development of the tunnel. It was no afterthought.
@@ivanfilippov6374 why would you make a tunnel system that fits only one type of train? The other three don't. Waste of taxpayer's money. Another labor, money laudering rort.
@@nathanhansford76 To increase capacity by not being tethered to the antiquated technology in the old trains. Instead of using the 100 year old signalling system, we can instead use modern "High Capacity Signalling" so that can run trains closer together. The old trains are not equipped with the equipment required for the new signalling system and it is easier to just buy new trains than to refit all of them. The HCMT's can be made 4 carraiges longer than our usual trains because the Metro Tunnel Supports trains longer than the City Loop and the rest of the network does. To increase safety we can add Platform Screen Doors, which can only line up to one type of train. The Metro Tunnel does not need to be a general purpose railway tunnel because Freight Trains, V/Line, Older metro trains etc will never need to use it as they can easily go around it via Flinders. Therefore we can tailor the tunnel and the HCMT's that compliment it to do the one job they are designed to do more efficiently by not bothering with the century old standards that govern our railway network

Instead how about asking anyone who knows something about how trains work or read the Business Case for the Metro Tunnel which outlined exactly why they decided not to support other train types.
Well my answer to that is if taxpayers are paying out the rear do the bloody job right to begin with.
@@georgekordis4268 What is the issue? Like I said they decided to sacrifice flexibility to increase capacity
@@ivanfilippov6374 Flexibility does give rise to better capacity.
However the government decided on X'trapolis 2.0 instead to keep the Ballarat Train Factory which builds them open, as Alstom probably threatened to close shop if they didn't get a new order
The "no direct interchange" is just false Town Hall Station directly interchanges with Flinders Street. State Library station directly interchanges with Melbourne Central station. They have different names because Metro Trains Melbourne and the 000 responders wanted them to be easily distinguishable.
The horsewoman of the apocalypse
Peta Credlin? I wouldn't give her that much credit
Incredibly silly take - "Bascially none of your trains" actually meaning all the 70 new ones built for this purpose, and the only type which will operate on the line for the next 40 years? Gotcha...
Same in America 😢
Amateur decade.........
Why is that a problem? The 70 (they bought 5 more) HCMT's are more than enough to run metro tunnel services
Yes, it should read like you said. They are well aware that everybody will jump up and down without doing any research.
Meanwhile im still wrapping my head around how the Metro Tunnel services JUST 2 TRAIN LINES OUT OF 16
Arguably it's three - Sunbury, Pakenham, and Cranbourne, with the airport line to follow, if it's ever built.
People that I knew never voted Labour don’t know how they got in last time. They are so incompetent
Yay Victoria
Now we know why they increased the land tax
Oh well you’ve still got your football and meat pies 😩
There's always another agenda. Labour knows exactly who they're following
Ah Victoria, perfect once, but, long, long, long ago, but Australias biggest disaster EVER!!!!
Should of got western Australia to organise it for Victoria...they get jobs done
I ain't no Labor cuddler, but Peta, you and Tony didn't exactly cover your selves in glory with the 'floor show' you two put on?!
Typical labour blunders. This government needs to go.
It’s not all bad in Victoria- after all they’re working on a treaty.
Victoria is too busy being woke & protesting to be productive. One has to ask what engineer planned the tunnel? Or was it a DEI appointment???
The same thing happened in Sydney
They had trains built in Hong Kong
14 mm to wide
2019
Where is Alan Jones ???
It’s because the trains in the tunnels were just a second thought, the tunnels were built for other reasons. Iykyk.
I despise the Victorian government as much as anyone does but development of the HCMT trains that will use the tunnel went hand in hand with development of the tunnel. It was no afterthought.
@66secularist clearly not true or the trains would fit.....
@@nathanhansford76 The HCMT's fit, there's videos of them going through the tunnel
Ask about the hidden over spending in Jacinta’s shipping containers.
Tell us more.
They are geniuses 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 jail Dan Andrews
What do you expect - Jacinta Allan has made a mess of every portfolio she has controlled
Duh. Aluminium smelters can't operate on intermittent supply. Anyone who knows anything about aluminium smelting could have told you that. The pretence of converting to so-called green supplies was always a sham - pretty words to appease the political class.
Danistan. No one will be responsible. No one will remember who approved it. Who is surprised?
Only the Labor Party can invent new ways to balls things up!!!!
We’re selling up and leaving Victoria
This is making us a laughing stock in North Korea.
You’re stuffed Australia and you did it to yourselves
When one Premier in Victoria wanted to China’s Belt and Road initiative.. shame, shame, shame 🇦🇺
Up north we had a saying, every winter Victorians leave home and head north with a clean pair of undies and $5. They stay six months and don't change either.
They have farmed outthe parking infringement responsibilities to some private company here they don't even do that
Victorians Must Feel More "PAIN" before the STUPID goes Away (Vote the Bastards OUT 4EVER)💥🎯💥
They were never meant to fit into the tunnel.....that was the plan..
And yet the average Victorian don't have a problem with this Government..otherwise they wouldn't be in office😢
The average Victorian voter is obviously politically ignorant!
