  • A visual overview of our skin-on-frame canoe building process. These 3 canoes fit inside of each other, and all 3 are fitted to paddle, row, sail, and catamaran together. For detailed descriptions of each of these steps, check out our instagram page, / capefalconbuilds where we have the same video broken into 9 different videos, each with a thorough description of the process. First video in the series is May 4, 2020.

    Absolutely love the way this master teacher boat builder covers it all and most definitely knows what he’s talking about. Just the background music of this is plenty good reason to play this video. Some things in life are super interesting and educational to watch whether we actually ever do the activity or not. It’s a vicarious experience that helps us expand our horizons to engage with all kinds of exciting and interesting endeavors with others or just to enjoy by ourself.
    This video is one of the best of watching a real master of his craft do his thing, and the best is at the end of it becoming a shared adventure with not just one canoe but 2 and 3 !!!
    The guitar strumming is just grand as it gets.

In addition to making me want to build a skin on frame canoe, a craft which btw you have raised to a new level, watching and listening to your film just makes our household feel inspired by the possibilities and in awe of your continually improving craftsmanship with workshop and camera. Thank you!

You mentioned Duckworks in one of your videos, Chuck L and his wife are good people . Did the Texas 200 a while back with them . I might attempt again in a couple 66s.. set up Tandem style wit spray deck and lateen rig off a sunfish set up ( toying with different sail setups ) . Will pick your brain on that once I get to that point .

    This is so amazing! Thanks for all the editing work put into this summary. I'm curious about the dark colored rub rail in the largest of the three canoes. Just a dark colored Rubio Monocoat?

    • @capefalconkayak
      @capefalconkayak  3 года назад

      Just what happens to Ash, when largest Canoe is basically a Weather shield for the other two. I’m thinking about permanently switching to cherry gunwales to avoid the blackening. I also recently learned that we should really be using the Hardener with the Rubio, but that gets kind of pricey, because they don’t make it in small batches.

I do want to know since your natural wood color and only dye the fabric why didnt you use bronze screws when you attached the gunwale rub rails?

    • @capefalconkayak

      These days I’m using truss head bolts which also solves the snag problem

  • @LukePighetti
    @LukePighetti Год назад

    At 6:25 I found it really interesting that you apply the dye from the bottom up, my first instinct would be to apply it from the top down to control dripping. But maybe it doesn't matter? Would love to hear your thoughts on this

    • @capefalconkayak
      @capefalconkayak  Год назад +1

      Bottom up is better, because if you go to the other direction, you end up seeing streaks even after it’s completely covered but these days I’m not doing much acid die most of what I do is earth pigment, which is a completely different process

  • @kovacs4577

    Beautiful. Do you have a design that you would recommend for solo tripping or long weekend two-person trips? And no worries about the multiple emails the past 24-hours - this video more than made up for them. All the best,

    • @capefalconkayak
      @capefalconkayak  3 года назад

      I think that just depends on what you’re used to and what you’re comfortable with. If you have experience doing long solo trips in tandems you could do the same thing in one of my boats. Personally I prefer a boat for each use. I find that if I get a tandem small enough to where I like swallowing it it’s not big enough for a weekend camping for two people and if I make it big enough that it’s comfortable for two people for a weekend camping I don’t like soloing it. But that’s just me and I don’t have a lot of canoeing experience. The short answer is that if you see something you like in some other type of canoe you can build that with the system usually

    Very nice construction! In our shallow waters there 's a lot of submerged stuff, not only junk but half trees with snapped branches sticking out, and thorny bushes. Would the skin on this frame hold out against that sort of stuff? Using a PE canoe now, but it's very heavy.

    • @capefalconkayak
      @capefalconkayak  2 года назад +2

      It’s certainly not indestructible but I’m always surprised by what doesn’t put a hole in it. I did a really extensive video on skin on frame durability that you can find on the channel here but just to give you an example myself and my partner paddled into a piece of submerged rebar so hard that we were stuck on top of it and it took a couple minutes to get the canoe off of it. Left a nasty scratch but didn’t even get through the coating to the skin. We also recently catamaraned two of them together and took them down some moderate white water including some pretty heavy crashes with no real damage. In 20 years I’ve personally never punctured the skin on skin boat and in the roughly 2000 boats I’ve helped put on the water I’ve only heard of two on the water punctures. So it can definitely happen but it doesn’t seem to happen that much.

    • @wouter4551
      @wouter4551 2 года назад

      @@capefalconkayak Awesome, thanks for your reply and it's an answer i'm happy to read! The rebar is something i've hit before- i'm in the Netherlands and you can expect trash anywhere in the water including concrete and metal. Looks like i'm going to have to try out this method! Love your video's and going to search for the one on durability!

    May I ask, is there a particular reason for the brownish dye? Personally I would stick to pure white any time, but maybe there is a reason beyond mere esthetical differences of opinion?

    • @capefalconkayak
      @capefalconkayak  3 года назад

      The white would be nice but it doesn’t stay white because the coating turns yellow, so adding some fabric dye to make that look better is the reason.
