They did that with all of Mercedes’ relationships. Kurt, Santana, Sam. Even though they were better with Mercedes’ and their relationship with Rachel came out of nowhere and felt super forced.

Not for long as in the season 4 clips when they visited mckinely his whole face lit up when they interacted....and season 5 and 6 even better....they really have a close bond till this day.

I feel like they took Kurt, then Glee's most popular character, and paired him with Glee's most hated character, Rachel, to make her less hated. And it didn't work, it just ruined one of the best friendships on the show.
