This dropped when I was 12. It marked a change in Joel's sound. Listening along just now, it sounds to me like The Rolling Stones, especially the single backing vocal on the later half of the verses and the chorus, like Keith Richards behind Mick Jagger. The guitar solo followed by the sax solo sounds like the Stones too.

My favorite drumming in a Billy Joel song! I always thought that if I ever had a grungy little garage band, this would be the best song to cover. It's just so raw and in your face. This came out in 1980, and the whole album Glass Houses was his take on the late '70s punk sound and the emerging New Wave.

My sister was friends with some people that had a bar band in the mid-'90s to early '00s. I saw the band perform two or three times; this was a staple of their sets. They were amazing in their performance of it. BTW, I am a huge Billy Joel fan, and Liberty DeVitto was (and still is) a beast behind the kit.

This is my absolute favourite Billy Joel song . My favourite lines in the song are remember how i found you there , alone in your electric chair, i told you dirty jokes until you smiled . The whole song is about a guy with a devil may care attitude , trying to get a more cautious, straight laced girl to like him and live a life , totally different to how she was bought up

With his "Glass Houses" and "An Innocent Man" albums, Billy Joel melded the sounds of late 50s through mid-60s rock and soul with 80s sensibilities. Between Springsteen, Mellencamp, Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits, and Billy Joel, the spirit of rock and roll was kept alive amidst all of the new wave, proto-techno, and hair metal so prominent in the 80s.

1970s for sure. Speaking of which, my favorite album of his is actually the stranger, which came out in the mid to late '70s every song on that is fantastic. One of his really rocking songs which I think rocks even more than this one although I really like this one, and it's from The Stranger album, is called, only the good die young. I don't know if you've done that one yet or not. Other great ones from that album are Vienna waits for you, our little Italian Cafe, or something like that anyway, movin' out - I don't know they're all good now that I think about it, laugh. She's Always a woman, that huge hit for him, came off of that album as well.

I disagree. From the perspective of a writer, it packs a whole lot of description of a (possibly toxic) relationship into a very short song. It's surprisingly nuanced. One could probably write a novel using this as inspiration for character and conflict.

Just a note on the lyrics. "Bedford-Stuy" is (or was) a notorious public housing complex in New York City. As you can probably guess from the context - not a place you'd want to stroll through alone in the 1980s.

Naysayers always have tried to pigeonhole Billy, but he doesn't really have one "style". Every album was different than the last. For example, 52nd Street was his jazz-rock fusion project, which differed from The Stranger; Glass Houses was his attempt at hard(er) rock; The Nylon Curtain was an homage to The Beatles and George Martin; An Innocent Man was a throwback to '50s and '60s rock. All completely different sounds, all from the same artist.
