Sears Suburban SS16

- One of our recent projects that we wanted to share has been fixing up our Sears Suburban SS16 a little bit. It is by no means a show tractor but we enjoy it and look forward to using it for several yard work projects around the house.

As an engineer for Roper I have spent many hours on the Suburban. As I remember the SS16 was a single cylinder Tecumseh and the ST16 was the Onan BF-16. Any questions let me know. Sincerely Richard Goodman
Holy cow we've got a celebrity in the house. I have to say the Suburban is just about as perfect of a design as an operator could hope for, so well done to you guys that created it. About 15 years ago it was a '67 Suburban 12 from craigslist that got me hooked on garden tractors. I restored it and used it quite a bit until the IGN coil went sneakers up. Within the last few days I tinkered around and now it's running like a champ again with the original Tecumseh 12.
The things turn tight, the steering is light, the low gear plows like a mule and the top gear gets on down the road and they're simple to work on. All that and a cigar lighter. Like I said, just about a perfect design. 😎
You are correct! It is a great tractor. I remember doing circle track testing where we ran 600 lbs. draw bar load for 600 hours. The only problems we had was tire wear!! Best Wishes, Richard goodman

Not sure what the front hub caps were off of but the back ones are, I believe are off an old Studebaker.

How the hell do you get at the solenoid?
Yours is in a different place than mine is. Mine is under the battery tray. Then again, mine is a different year because my dash is totally different.

Removing the battery provides access to the solenoid.
@@robotacropolis Mine didn't. I removed the battery and the plastic tray only to reach a metal plate that was integral to the sides of the dash and frame. The solenoid was bolted to the underside of that. I couldn't even see it with my phone camera, but did manage to get one hand in there with a 7/16 wrench and luckily got both nuts off the solenoid bracket and moved everything towards the steering column far enough to disconnect all the leads. I rerouted it all to the engine-side of the firewall and mounted the new solenoid there. I think our models are slightly different. Here's mine...
