- Kevin's mother formally worked as a civilian in the military in the underground complex control centre, UGC, in North Bay. This was an underground building that was used during the Cold War.

I went on a private tour before it closed... my dad was a civilian who worked there for years. Very cool place.
Just for fun, I tallied up my time spent in the 'Hole' on 3 separate postings... I have a total of 1600 driving trips in tunnel, 8,500 hrs working inside the complex. My first tour was just over 3 yrs mid to late '70s in 22 NR. Of the 400+ personnel on a given day I was one of 2 people doing the actual Identification of incoming aircraft to the continent during a given shift... we were in a small separate room from the main operations room that included Weapons control, Tracking, Height and Manual Inputs sections... those people made up the bulk of the operations personnel on a given shift. My room was never without a person behind the screen day and night for 43 yrs. My next tour in the complex was in mid '80s as the Course Director for all of the Air Weapons Control and Counter Measures School (AWCCS)... that was the school that trained all Canadian NORAD personnel who served in Canada and USA. My third underground tour, returning from USA NORAD exchange, was in the Region Operations Control Centre (ROCC) which replaced the former Semi Automatic Groundcontrol Environment (SAGE) system. They were exciting and stressful times. (stress is when a 1/2 ton chunk of rock breaks loose and hits the roof above you during a midnight shift)
My Uncle, Cecil Hewitt, was mayor of North Bay in the late 50s. As Mayor, he was given a complete tour of the facility.
