  • In this presentation Wesley Johnson explains how to recursively calculate DNA coverage of autosomal DNA test results. No method had existed for automating the calculation of DNA coverage. Wesley's 2022 paper in the "Journal of Genetic Genealogy" explained why only ranges and not a single number are needed to accurately represent DNA coverage when no children of the target person have tested. That paper led to two partial implementations - one that propagated the lower bound and one that propagated the initial test taker average coverage back through the generations. His forthcoming paper details how to calculate the upper and lower bounds and also examines their behavior and the behavior of the propagated average under different family tree configurations. The goal is to have all commercial family tree software include DNA coverage as a standard feature so that the results are free for anyone to implement.
