    The Monkees summed it up best themselves. In a scene from HEAD, their movie about biting the hand that fed them, they sing “Hey hey, we are the Monkees, you know we like to please/A manufactured image, with no philosophies” over a series of TV screens. Well said boys.

      Head is the most surrealistic psychedelic absurdist mind-f#%k of a film ever done. Script by Jack Nicholson. The opening music Porpoise Song was written by Carol King and includes the line "riding on backs of giraffes alright for a while" a reference to the singer Mickey's stint as a child actor in a tv show called Circus Boy.

    Grew up on the Monkee's, great show and fun music for its time. Some big stars wrote some of their music (Neil Diamond - I'm a Believer). Fun fact: Michael Nesmith's mother who was a secretary invented White-Out and made a fortune.

  • @zendt66
    @zendt66 3 месяца назад +18

    The singer on this song is Davy Jones who starred as the Artful Dodger in "Olliver" in both London and Broadway. The fellow on the tambourine is Micky Dolenz who had a TV show "Circus Boy" when he was younger. The other two, Mike Nesmith (on guitar) and Peter Tork were primarily musicians before being cast for their roles here. Often dismissed as "the pre-fab four", they had a great team behind them writing songs and recording the early songs. These included Boyce and Hart, Neil Diamond and Gerry Goffin/Carole King and other names from that era that you would recognize. As a band, they grew into their roles.

I lived on campus in a dorm and you had to get down to the TV ROOM (we didn't have TV's in our rooms) about 2 hours before their show started or you wouldn't get a seat on a couch, a chair or a place on the floor!!! I am not old enough to have been around when the Monkees were first around, so I missed all the "controversy" about them not writing their own music or not playing their own instruments. Even though they eventually did both of these things. I just remember when I was growing up that I would watch The Monkees TV show in reruns every day after school. There I fell in love with their music. Though not quite as consistent as The Beatles, they had lots of great songs. In fact, I would argue some of the best songs of the 60s. The Monkees history you read at the end didn't mention the Monkees also starred in a 1968 movie, HEAD, written by Jack Nicholson, a TV special in 1968 after the series that guest-starred a bunch of 1950s rock legends, and a number of guest appearances with Johnny Cash and various other talk and variety shows. Their series reran on Saturday afternoons and they continued to do new commercials for Kool-Aid. In the '70s, Micky and davy teamed up with the two guys who wrote their early hits and toured and recorded as Dolenz, Jones, Boyce, and Hart. Mike basically perfected the music video format that led to MTV, Davy later became a jockey, Micky acted a little (he had been a child star on TV in the '50s) and palled around with John Lennon and Alice Cooper before moving to England and becoming a TV director. Peter did some jail time for pot, then became a teacher and started several new bands. Then, in the '80s, MTV reran their '60s series, causing them to become popular again, Rhino Records released a major box set and a number of rarities LPs, the band reformed (without Mike at first. His mother had invented Liquid Paper and he inherited millions), put out a couple of new LPs and then became a huge hit with oldies concerts and TV appearances. Mike would rejoin every once in a while and the four of them put out a new album in the '90s, followed by a one-hour TV special that was a sequel to their '60s series. Mickey and Davy wrote autobiographies. Mike became a cult-favorite with his solo albums and is often credited with inventing country-rock. They continued to tour and put out NEW material in various combinations even as Davy, then Peter, then Mike, died. Their 2016 album GOOD TIMES got rave reviews and has songs written by some of TODAY'S best songwriters. WHEW! I was just gonna mention the movie and got carried away!

    I've always liked the Monkees Lee as they broke free with proven talent of the constraints set upon them by the management who regarded them as their sole creation. They were to show by their writing and playing that they weren't just a fictional television band ! They were bold and rather suprisingly good. Davy was an english theatre star with a good voice , Micky a previous TV star too (Circus Boy) and he could sing as well and so could Michael Nesmith who would go on to separate success . Stephen Stills was passed because of his teeth so he sent along his mate Peter Tork from Laurel canyon. They were colourful characters. 😹🌈💈🤡🔥

    The guy with the glasses is Michael Nesmith and he created MTV. His mother invented a thing called white out which was a way to fix typewriter errors back before there were computers for that sort of thing. Also, this band was created for a tv show American answer to the Beatles. They were musician actors who could do both, but the studio did not want that, so they went to war with the powers that be, and the show lasted for 2 years. The Saturday morning reruns are what solidified them with the youth of the day. They actually have some pretty awesome songs other than this one. You should check them out

    Those 4 distinct personalities were what made the tv show so great. They were really genuine in who they were & how they performed. They were already talented when they were cast on the show, Davy Jones, for example, had done Broadway & London productions & was nominated for a Tony Award. The others, too, had their talents pre-show that made them perfect for the show & the band in real life.

    Great Beatles sound alike songs like All You Need is Cash and The Fool on the Pill. Instead of having a guitarist who loved Indian music, he was an actual Indian.

    In 1967, the boys revolted and gained full control of their recording (after their management had already sold 75 million albums) You can even see Mike alongside John Lennon in film footage of when The Beatles were recording Day In The Life. John felt sorry for them cause they were trapped in a system almost like the Beatles had been trapped in. Just as they were gaining some control and self-respect the backlash against the faked music from earlier resulted in their show being cancelled and the "band" finally dissolving in 1970. They didn't even make all that much money.

    Although he Wasn't on the credits for this song, Mickey Dolenz was the group's drummer. Although I haven't read the other comments before I. Wrote this I'm assuming somebody must have filled you in about the basics of this group. They were actually 4 actors, although 2 of them were musicians also. I'm.
    Pretty sure that it may have been the wrecking crew that actually handled all the music on their first 8 or 9 hits before they started doing their own music. The TV series was a huge hit and they themselves became more and more talented in that all 4 of them ultimately actually could sing. And that's when Mickey took up the drums. So in the end, they did become a true band but it was a long road for them and to their credit. They were fighting it all along. But in their contract is no uh. Reference to them doing their own music because they were hired simply to act in a TV series, which was basically the same type of movies that The Beatles had already made. They took on the same silly antics. And just like The Beatles, they did a lot of speeding up a scenes comically. Anyway, they were pretty much an enigma. Despite being poked fun at quite a bit by other real groups. Or even actual rock band followers. I give them credit for becoming what they did become. Since their TV series was aimed at younger teenagers.
    Their music was aimed at, and listened to, by younger teenagers.

      Yes, you are in fact, correct. But I was referring to the fact that this was a rare cattle call where everybody and anybody could come in and apply for a role in this TV series. And despite not being a band member anywhere, Peter was able to play instruments. The same as Mike Nesmith. Whereas Mickey and Davy had no musical experience with the exception. That he always had an exceptional voice but was not in any other musical group. So Davy usually played with a tambourine. When the groups performed and Mickey learned to play the drums.

    Their popularity rivaled the Beatles in the early days. The main complaint was that they didn't write their own music. Sure, in retrospect, they were nothing even close the Beatles, but the question is were they a decent group from the 60
    s . The answer is yes, and they were also a popular band with a tv show and thus a cultural phenomenon. They had longevity people loved them long after the 60's disappeared. My favorite recollection is seeing Davy Jones on the Brady Bunch. The Monkees show was shown in reruns for decades and that is when I saw it as a youngster and became a fan. Long after they came on the scene. Let's be real, a lot of performers today have other people write their music They don't play any instruments, they are just "singers" with autotune. so, let's consider the facts here. The Monkees were way above! and, I was a Mickey fan. Their music is fun!
