  • Mr. Saving the Day fixes the Ignition and Door Lock on his 2004 Toyota Tacoma Deluxe Cab, V6, 4W
    Hey guys,
If you really need to drive your truck (emergency) and the ignition lock is giving you trouble, if you can get it to the acc position, you can pull the lock. If you look inside the lock holder there is a metal tab. If you turn that metal tab to the right, with a long pair of pliers, you can start the truck. Turn it off by turning it the opposite way. Order your replacement lock and install it ASAP. My son thought that was cool and wanted me to leave it that way (lockless, starting with pliers)....I said,"No Way" , Mr.SavintheDay-Out

I Love the way Toyota stays consistent with socket sizes and plastic latches. Makes working on them easy.

OK, I'm a locksmith (just a disclaimer). Worked on a Toyota Solara SLE today. The original key worked in the ignition just fine, and the trunk (after a lot of wiggling) but wouldn't work in either of the doors. I cut a key to code. That means I called in the VIN and got a key code, translated the code to the cuts, and basically cut a factory key. This key worked in all of the locks, which means the original key had worn down enough to prevent it from working in the doors. Toyota for a while used split wafers in their locks to make picking difficult. They wear more on one side than the other and cause the key to pick up only one side, or the worn wafer twists, both scenarios will cause the lock not to work. All that junk in Mr.SavintheDay's lock was probably a mixture of graphite and liquid lube. DPO (damned previous owner) probably used graphite one time and WD-40 or some other spray lube later to make gunk in the lock. A shot or two of electronics spray cleaner may have cleaned the lock without removing it. Don't go overboard too fast with the cleaners as you may end up with it running down the outside of the car and you'll get streaks just like when you spill gas down the side of the car. Have soap and water ready if you're an over the top kind of guy. If the split wafers are the real problem, you can take them and the springs out (have to remove the locks). This does decrease the security, but there's usually only one set of split wafers. There are 8 wafers in the door with 4 depths, theoretically 65,536 combinations. By dropping one wafer you go to 7 pins, or 16,384 combinations, That's a big drop, but it's still a lot of keys to try out. Ten wafers in the ignition gives 1,048,576 theoretical combinations, dropping a wafer gives 262,144 theoretical combinations. The numbers are theoretical because of the Maximum adjacent cut specifications or MACS, where you can't cut too deep a cut next to a shallow cut or you'll change the depth of the shallow cut. Even so, anybody with that many keys in his pocket is going to have a hard time keeping his pants up and running away from a Cop or you chasing after him. He'd probably ditch the pants, and if you picked them up and whacked him upside the head with them it would be better than a sock full of quarters.

Thanks for the info., I was wondering how to get the keys copied at the non-wore out size. I think that is part of the problem with the door lock, sometimes if I flip the key over or almost hold it in the center of the lock, I can get the wafers to let lose and turn--------------- Thanks again for commenting

The Ilco catalog shows that the 2004 Tacoma does NOT have a transponder chip in the key. Take your registration to the dealer. They should cut you a non plastic head key from the VIN for about $15 plastic head will cost you more. This is as close to a factory original key as you can get. If you want to support your local locksmith, he can do the same thing but it will cost a little more because he has to pay a service to convert the VIN to a key code, The service costs me $15 during business hours and $25 after hours. Call around, the dealer may not provide a non-plastic head but the locksmith will have a TR47 key blank without the plastic head (TR47-P)

The problem may also be the split wafers. I saw them clearly in your video. If your new factory key doesn't work in the door, pull the door lock again and remove the split wafer, the one with the line in the middle. looks to be about #5, about the middle of the lock. Positions 1 & 2 aren't used in the door lock. Make sure you get the 2 springs out too or they'll fall out later and really "F" up the lock.

Does this mean your son has a key that goes to the ignition and then another key (old key) that unlocks the doors? I am having trouble with my Tacoma driver side door and replaced the handle last year and wasn't sure if I replaced the lock would I have to use a different key for that one door or how that would work?

Before you do all that just go to the dealer with your VIN and have them cut you a new key-99% of the time the locks work like new again (the keys wear down).

If I recall right, the key code was stamped on the cylinder of the passenger door lock.

$139.00 for toyota genuine parts to replace both door and ignition locks. Thanks for this video. I'm going to try to degrease and lube the driver lock cylinder.

Never put oil into a lock switch. Oil attracts dust. Use graphite

Roy Phillips if I don't have any graphite can I just grind up some number 2 pencil lead really really fine and use it instead?

Shaving the graphite of a pencil in the hole or scraping the graphite or the key channel and then putting the key in with the shavings in the hole always worked for me.

Does this work if the key won't even go into the lock? My key no longer goes into the lock, as if there's something in the lock and it's been jammed

Microtouch Titanium Trim is a rip-off. All reviews of it are bad.
