  • In this video I show how I installed two thermocouples in the SR540 coffee roaster and connected them to the Artisan Software. This setup also works for the SR800, although you might consider a longer Bean Thermocouple.

    Why would someone give this a thumbs down? There is good information here and a bunch of links in the description so why wouldn't they like it? Very strange. Anyway, I liked it and appreciate it.

      @@adolfoperez1312 I don't have the SR800, but check that the thermocouple tip is inside the beans when approaching first crack. The exact elevation is not very critical.

    Very interesting that the ET tracks the BT so closely. What would be interesting on the SR800 is how closely the ET/BT tracks with the built in thermometer below the bean chamber. This might provide users with additional information for controlling their roast.. If that thermocouple tracks closely with the BT, would be a nice evolution to tap into this thermocouple.

    anyone wanting to simplify this can use the temp probe on a Weber iGrill BBQ temp sensor and export the data to an excel spreadsheet. Graphs are easily made in the spreadsheet. You can save time/fan speed/power levels and graph airtemp/probe temp vs time.

    Thank you for the videos you posted. All are very interesting! I was wondering how you were able to control the speed and power of the 540 from the Artisan dashboard.

    • @chrismack3516
      @chrismack3516 3 года назад

      I just realized after watching your other video again that you were not controlling the speed and power with Artisan --you were marking your profile with the sliders after manually changing the speed and power on the SR540. Is that correct?

    • @coffeeroastingathome8890
      @coffeeroastingathome8890  3 года назад +2

      Hi Chris, yes this is correct. I make the changes manually in the SR540 with the knob, and then move the slider in Artisan to match the SR540 setting. I do this only to keep a record of the setting changes I made during the roasting for future reference, but you have to remember to adjust the sliders every time you make a change in the SR540. It would be nice to be able to control the SR540 directly from the Artisan sliders, but that will require modifications beyond my skills. Thanks for your feedback!

    Hi, first off, this video and your other one is fantastic. I wouldn't have been able to set it up without this. I've used your set up on my artisan profile, but the one thing I can't figure out is how to get the step visual of the change of the Air and Burn. I know how to configure and add them to the chart, but mine just shows up as small blips on the bottom of the chart. It's as if the scale is off or something. Thoughts on how to fix the configuration for that?

    • @coffeeroastingathome8890
      @coffeeroastingathome8890  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it and I am glad they were useful. About the visual indication, in the menu Config-Events-Sliders, make sure the Min and Max for the Air and Burner are set to 10/90, and click the "Coarse" checkbox. Offset should be 0.0 and Factor 1.0. I hope this helps, you can also download the configuration file and use that.

    I am setting up my sr 800 with thermocouples. I have ordered a 300mm probe for the bean probe. I am having difficulty determining where the end of the probe should be in relation to the green beans. Is it ok if the end is in the bean mass at the start of the roast or should it be above the beans? I also am using the extension tube. I have searched high and low and can't find the answer to this. Your videos have been a great help in setting up the artisan software.

    • @coffeeroastingathome8890
      @coffeeroastingathome8890  2 года назад

      Yes, it is OK if the tip of the thermocouple is in the bean mass at the start of the roast, an inch or two away from the bottom. The exact position is not too critical, as long as it is repeatable between roasts.

    great video. so for BT you would suggest to get a thermocouple that's longer so it would stay touching the bean mass but no to the point where it would touch the bottom where the heat is coming in right?

    Thank you for making this video. I am wondering if you plan to use the extension tube on your SR540 since they seem to provide a more even roast and more intimate with the air flow. If so, could you still use both therocouples?

      @coffeeroastingathome8890  3 года назад +1

    You mention the idea of only using the ET sensor. Have you noticed if it reads much differently than the temp sensor built into the sr540?

    • @coffeeroastingathome8890
      @coffeeroastingathome8890  3 года назад +1

      The built in temperature sensor measures the inlet air temperature, before it interacts with the beans. The beans exchange heat with the air and also release steam, changing the air temperature in ways that are difficult to correlate closely with the inlet air temperature. The built in temperature sensor reads generally quite a bit higher than the ET sensor, and the temperature changes when changing settings are much more abrupt. Hope this helps!

    I have the air and power settings showing on the left side of the Artisan graph like you do, but they do not change when I change the settings on my SR800. What do I need to do to get them to show the proper settings? Thank you

    • @coffeeroastingathome8890
      @coffeeroastingathome8890  3 года назад

      You need to click and drag the slider to match the settings in the SR800 roaster. There is no communication between artisan and the roaster settings, so artisan has no way of automatically knowing what settings you have in the roaster. The sliders are intended to keep a record of what you do (like writing the settings in a piece of paper, but more convenient).
