    Thank you for the video, it's a great help. One thing I didn't realize, using the MS6514 set as "Meter" (not PID or TC4) in the Device Assignment, T1 on the unit is read as Exhaust Temp, and T2 is read as Bean Temp. After troubleshooting some serial port issues, everything seemed fine but my test reading kept showing "u.u" as BT. I had disabled ET display since I only have one probe currently. Well guess what, if you disable ET display and your probe is plugged into T1 on the MS6514, you see nothing! 🤔
    So word to the wise, by default T1 is ET, T2 is BT, and from what I can tell there is no way to switch these on the Meter setup. No big deal, just Good To Know as they say. :-D

      YES thank you so much for mentioning this! This is a critical point with the Mastech that I meant to point out in the video so I'm gonna pin your comment for others. I've had my thermocouple plugged into T2 for so long I just took it for granted and forgot why 😅

    • @MattSF23
      @MattSF23 Год назад +1

      Hah thanks yeah I see the same thing in the computer space--you have something set up in your environment so long that you completely forget you had to set that specific thing aeons ago 😆
      It looks like you can Swap ET/BT under Curves->Filters, but I assume this would be used when you had data coming in on both channels.

      @@TheCaptainsCoffee Just set up my Artisan using this video and was struggling with getting my Perfect Prime T21000GN (aftermarket Mastech).... Anyways you do need to put words in the video (where you are configuring the TC device) that you need to have it in T2 connection instead of T1.... I was messing with driver setting and finally figured this out haha. Just want to help the next person who finds this video and save them time. Again great video!

    I really appreciate this video! I'm sure it saved me hours and let me get right to trying out Artisan on some roasts. I'm wondering if you have any plans to do a video showing an actual roast using a Fresh Roast machine and Artisan. So far I'm finding it very difficult to understand what I should be watching for and targeting during the roast, and the result is an RoR that's all over the place and not very good tasting coffee. I'm especially having a hard time figuring out how much heat to give it during the drying phase to get the roast on a trajectory where a declining RoR is possible throughout the rest of the roast while achieving the temperatures necessary to hit first crack. Thanks!

    • @TheCaptainsCoffee
      @TheCaptainsCoffee  6 месяцев назад

      I am planning on a video on RoR! I hadn't planned on focusing it exclusively on the fresh roast, but I can certainly use it as an example. Personally, I think folks focus on the RoR too much - if you focus on a reasonable bean curve, the RoR will follow. If you wanna email a log or two of what you have going on, I'd be happy to provide some feedback!

    Hello again David, I know you mentioned that you don't use ET with the Mastech, but can you measure bt and et with the 6514? Is it just a matter of using T1 and T2 on the Mastech and using 2 thermocouples?
    Bill

    Great video! This is awesome for a newbie. When I hit drop and OFF, it asks if I want to save the profile. If I hit yes it clears the viewer, and I need to manually open the profile if I want to look at it. Where can I find the setting where it does not auto clear the completed roast?

    • @TheCaptainsCoffee
      @TheCaptainsCoffee  10 месяцев назад

      Hmmm, so for me this is what happens: when I click Save, it opens the saved profile in a separate window and then clears the profile from my original window. I'm not sure where to adjust that setting, but if you find it please report back and let me know!

    Great video. Very informative. One question: When i configure my buttons as you did yours, they lay over the top of each other in the same range yet yours (auto?-) separate into different ranges on the y-axis as if augmented with a value plus the [99, 88, 77,... and so on] that you entered. Is the "combo" setting the one that auto-separates those data points and lines for power and fan into separate ranges?
    Also, what's the idea behind the 99, 88,...? Why not use 100, 90, 80,...? Maybe this is the piece I'm not understanding here.

    • @RamonMartinez-jz9uv
      @RamonMartinez-jz9uv 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I dont understand either why his actual values for both fan and power buttons seem to show on the graph in a completely disconnected way from either the left or right y axis. Fan9 with value 99 seems to show at 300 on the left axis, 27 on the right. Similarly disconnected to values for Power1 value 11, etc.
      The idea behind separating the button values by any number greater than 1 is that they will create that stepper effect and visually convey the up or down steps youre making with the fan and power settings. The larger the number, the larger the steps will display, the more pronounced the effect.
      "Combo" is just the event-marker style that shows on the graph, which is what the event buttons trigger. It is a combo of the "flag" style, which displays the assigned button values (99, 88, etc.) and the "step" style, which is that distinct stepper line you see across the graph.

    Nice! This would have made configuring for an SR800 so much easier, but since it took me hours poking through Artisan settings, at least I know how it works now 😂 One thing to look out for in smoothing, during the roast increasing the sample count and span will add delay to the RoR calc, so high smoothing might make it difficult to react quickly. In any case I've found RoR in an SR more of a nice to know during the roast since it's so reactive to air temp. I'll just stick to my fan and power plan, then review the RoR vs taste to adjust the next roast. Lastly for Phidget users, I've designed a nice 3d printed enclosure to hold the boards and wires. Keeps things neat and as noise free as possible.
    As always, thanks for being one of the only resources for SR roasting! I've learned so much from this channel and will continue to buy your excellent green to support!

    • @TheCaptainsCoffee
      @TheCaptainsCoffee  Год назад

      Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I go back and forth on roasting reactively to RoR and just using it as diagnosis when cupping and deciding on a good profile. These days I look at it as more of a trend as to what's happening and try not to be super reactive mid roast... It's so easy to overcompensate and overshoot. Either way, it's a tool for your toolbox and how you use it is up to you! Do you sell your 3d printed phidget enclosure?

      If memory serves, that can happen if you forget to mark Dry End (DE) and 1C during the roast! You just have to click the buttons when those events happen, Artisan won't mark them automatically (unless you set it up to mark them at certain temperatures)
