- I've spent a seriously sad amount of time looking at Aerial views of my country on google earth. Playing this map was about as obvious a thing to do as it gets.
Last week the world capitals definitely tested me, but ultimately there were enough geographical features and variety to discern the country. In the broadly unvarying landscape of Britain however, was there a chance I could be stumped?
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to RUclips to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!
Here's the link to the map.. DISCLAIMER In order to get this working, you need to download the script, and for the script to work you need to have downloaded tamper monkey or something similar. It's easy, and I'm sure the source is trustworthy, but download at your own risk..

Thanks for playing my Map :) I really appreciate it! For me personally the new version of the script is also a bit laggy sometimes. Could be bcause it's mapbox satellite and not Bing anymore. The radius of the image varies in the versions. It should be 15 km so you should have easily seen the sea in Neath and Newcastle, which you can see in the older version of the script. Btw: you may now also view the location in 3D by right clicking and dragging the map, which is a really cool new feature in the v6.

"I really have looked at Britain a LOT on Google Earth" is an early candidate for understatement of the century.
I'm from Neath and knew the first one straight away, but hearing you say 'Is that the River Neath' blew me away. You're cracked

Lag could be caused by Hardware Acceleration in your browser settings, likely not your computer's hardware. Test if performance is better with hardware acceleration on or off. Common issue with Geoguessr among my friends.
Note: you will need to restart your browser EACH TIME to test performance when enabling or disabling hardware acceleration.

Thanks, this worked for me

I've found firefox works much much better than chrome in this game
It's also worth trying a few different browsers, sometimes certain sites have issues with one of them
I love how he apologizes for lagging and then proceeds to fix it by opening and closing the recording window and reminding the computer how much it cost
I'm a borough councillor in Basingstoke, I actually represent the ward where the coordinates were, so I recognised this straight away. Still very impressed you guessed it so quickly, not being from the south!
i instantly recognised it too 😂
I live in Andover, and jokingly said "could be Basingstoke" then was like '...hang on.."
England is a wild place with wild names and wild titles, god bless.
You can probably thank Douglas Adams for a lot more people knowing Basingstoke than really should :)
im from tunbridge wells and i knew it straight away lmao
fairly sure the shiny thing in the first round is an plane, usually they move faster than the satellite captures an image and it leaves an interesting holographic mark vaguely plane-shaped. on google maps, it's often rainbow coloured, but bing might use a slightly different image capture method that gives it such a cool look
tonight… i see an plane, Richard gets a glitched round in Argentina, and James says “are we filming?”
@@emmittwhite1290 Tonoit, on bo''o'm geeeeaaar maates.
A plane was the first thing I thought of. A pink and white plane. Wizz Air perhaps?
That is an aerial photo, resolution is far far higher than the top of the line 10 metre per pixel commercial satellite imagery out there. Still it probably is something in the air though when a moving camera is artificially fixating on a point in the background ie the ground in this case it can make objects in between appear to be moving very fast. This is of course what a camera trying to take a stable non blurry image of the ground will be doing to correct for the motion of the aircraft, focus on a point, take the exposure, focus on next point, repeat; all using a motorised gimbal camera mount to get the shots.
This is false this guy works for the US government in area 51. He is just trying to cover up the existence of aliens!
Long time fan but worth commenting just to say I particularly enjoyed this video, all the facts and bits of info ('Here's where they're demolishing everything for HS2' for example) really made it a quality watch. I hope the lag gets sorted and you do more of these! Speedruns would be fun but it's your insight, hunches and thinking out loud that absolutely make these videos.
Well said.

10:05 knowing about trains helps because the blue and red stagecoach livery and the 12 Carriges indicates that this is in the South West. They are South West Trains / South Western Railway class 450s (depending on when this photo was taken)
I knew it was Basingstoke because of the train and the station.
Basingstoke was such a great shout early on. As soon as you mentioned it I noticed all the roads I used to use for work.

I can’t believe Neath came up first. I live about 10 miles away and was joking to myself that the only town I would recognise from satellite view would be Neath. Then when it came up and he said Neath I was doubting him lol
Lag is due to the website not the PC, notice when you zoom in on the map(the one you place the marker down) its quite smooth however the other is not.
Best ways to fix this either make sure no other applications are running, no extra tabs on the browser, or try new browsers like Opera GX or something else.
If he has his browser using integrated graphic on his cpu and not gpu that could be a reason/contributor at least. I only say that because it is weird a desktop is working so hard to look at sat maps.

Plus, 'I am an expert on UK cities....All-trin-cham!'
some random street in the UK
Geowizard: Ah yes behind the so-and-so firestation
That firestation is very very famous in the midlands and is only about 20 minutes from where Tom lives.
A bit of Line of Duty was filmed round the back of it and possibly inside it if I remember correctly. There was a bloke in a freezer or summat
Really enjoyed this video, as a West Mids resident myself, I thought it would be Meadowhall on that last one aswell, never would have guessed it would be Merry Hill 😂😂
My first thought was somewhere around Dudley as it looked like the M5.
First one I thought - that's the M1 so the location must be Rotherham :) I can't believe he took so long on the Newcastle location - how many rivers have all those bridges?
Tom! My late grandmother always watched Coronation street. Thanks for that call back to the show - I haven't heard the theme song since I last watched it with her. Thanks for the nice memory and the great videos as always. :)
A lovely Sunday Satelite video, nice one Tom
I just played the germany version of this mode, and the first city that came up was my literal hometown, even the marker was pretty close to the part of the city where I grew up in. That was quite the coincidence.
I live in Basingstoke and I had to stop scrolling and click on the video when I recognised the place
You hovered over my house for a bit aswell
Birmingham in seconds!
Honestly, would love to watch you doing some City Skylines.
A small tip for these UK satellite videos; if you can, zoom into railway lines and see if they are electrified or not. Chances are if they have overhead wires or third rail it will make a difference to the guess
10:10 As soon as I saw the red-yellow-blue livery I immediately thought South Western Railway. The green train is probably a GWR service.
I watched this video in hopes of seeing my home town and I was still shocked when it displayed Newcastle! Its always fun seeing your home city on geoguesser

Rounds 1, 2 and 5 were a write-off. I managed to get Round 4 after about half-an-hour of searching through various British towns. It even took me a few minutes to recognise Round 3 and it's my home city; the pin was about 100 yards away from where I play 5-a-side 🤣
I recognised Birmingham and round 5 immediately, since I'm from Birmingham
@@TubaBluba789 Got Brum, you can't not get it if you're a Brummie or a Yam Yam, Spaghetti Junction is just too obvious. Can't believe I didn't get Stourbridge though, kicking myself for that one.
Wheyyy greetings from Swansea! Keep up the great work!
This was the first time I tried the satellite mode for geoguessr and it was surprisingly fun. I managed to guess / deduce the first four but the last one completely stumped me. There is not much to go on when you can't read any signs...
Stourbridge represent! I mean, it was a terribly depressing place that I moved away from as soon as I could nearly 20 years ago but it was nice to see a pin being dropped right next to where I learned to swim.
I recognized that triangle ring road instantly! Didn't get any of the others though, it's fascinating seeing you do these!
a new mission is coming!! Amazing, Tom. I can't relate or understand (until I see it here) what the challenge is (I guess private property issues...?) but Black country - no roads sounds really good!
"And some of you might be asking how I knew it was Basingstoke..."
I'm just waiting for Tom to say, "Look, I'm just really fucking good, ok? And that's that. I didn't get here because I worked hard, I have a gift from God!" Lol
I live near Basingstoke and recognised it almost immediately, but I have no idea how Tom plucked this information out of the air on the first guess!!! What a legend he is...
Great video mate, I live in Stourbridge and got it straight away!
I loved this. I'd love to see you do this again.
Loved that you edited in a video clip there !!
I clicked on this thinking “I wonder if my little town will be here” less than 5 minutes in Tom zooms in on my house, love it mate

For Stourbridge, the giveaway was the shape of the ring road imo
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I instantly knew it was Basingstoke! Those roundabouts are no joke 😅

It's another classic, thank you for your content
This has been my favourite play along for sure
i could see my house on the last one! although i didn't realise it was stourbridge until you saw merry hill!
Cheers from Texas! Great video as always Tom, and I noticed you’ve mentioned your bandmates and wanted a refresher on what the name of your band was as I checked it out over a year ago and I’ve forgotten the name, but the music was very good!
That's cool to know your dad is in Swansea! I was in Cilmaengwyn north of Swansea for 7 years. Loved going to the Mumbles beach and pier.
My initial thought was Stourbridge for that last one, then when you picked out the Merry Hill Centre it threw me off and I thought Cradley Heath. It was all the old railways and canals that tipped me off.
It is difficult to diagnose why you computer might be stuttering without any information other than a symptom, but as others have said try turning on/off hardware acceleration. Another thing that comes to mind is that your pc could be thermal throttling (the computer slowing down processing speeds to save itself from overheating) because of bad airflow that could be caused by dust buildup. I will say the second option is most likely not the case, as you said you purchased the computer recently, and the odds of enough dust building up that quickly to thermal throttle a PC is astronomically small. Either way, the video was enjoyable nonetheless. Keep it up!
Good having ya back on the GeoGuesser grind. Been fun watching these vids. Though your other projects also appreciated.
Tom first thing I’d do is check task manager on my pc to see if its another program using my resources, or if its just chrome being wacky
check drivers
Guys this is a new pc...
@@blvberryy8025 What drivers would he check that impacts the chrome performance that badly, I think it's much more likely he has hardware accel disabled.
Definitely hardware acceleration in chrome settings
@@patrickf.123 dunno or his ram is unplugged LOL
There are some great bands from Swansea. The Pooh Sticks! Helen Love! Acrimony! I think some of the guys from Badfinger are from there too.
We're gonna need to hear some songs from that band now you have mentioned it
(note, if using a graphics card made by AMD, this will not apply) My best guess for the computer lag would be it trying to run off the wrong graphics card. While I don't know what your setup is and this might be completely wrong, it could be that your computer is using the integrated graphics instead of the actual fancy expensive graphics card. The way to solve this would be to go to your home screen, right click on your homescreen, at the bottom of the list that pops up click on "show more options", then click on "Nvidia control panel" when the panel opens there should be a thing labelled "manage 3D settings" and once you click on that it should display a bunch of settings, but the important one is at the top, where it should say "Preferred graphics processor:" then make sure it is set to "high performance NVIDIA processor"

Mate you are absolutely damn right about this script being laggy, but it has nothing to do with neither your hardware, nor broadband connection. I've got my 48 seconds result on Capitals of the World map, which I believe, still stands as a record. I was lucky enough to hit it literally hours before the script updated and it works terribly slow from there on. Maybe it's not the script to blame here, but rather Bing updates, I don't know for certain. Someone with a better knowledge and understanding of the situation might be able to tell what's going wrong here. For me though, this is a win situation, cause it's not longer possible to beat my result, unless there is a fix to these lags.
You should do the daily 'Worldle' as an intro of sorts to every geoguesser video, since it doesn't take too long
Or as one of them RUclips shorts maybe
How much ram do you have?
Does it lag in other browsers as well, or only in chrome (eg: firefox, edge)?
What is using your resources (can be seen in task manager, opened with ctrl+shift+esc)?
It's cool to see a youtuber from brum make it big, congrats man.
This was brilliant. The Basingstoke guess was nuts
The world cities with 1k population sounds cool, it could be more the style of your a diverse world videos with crazy guesses and whatnot
Hi Tom, love your videos, you may view it in 3D by right clicking and drag the map after the v6 update. Please click the satellite button in the menu for all the options, as well as checkout the script document's satellite section for all the new additions in the update, such as live weather, local time at the location, etc. Also please update to v6.0.2 that I released yesterday so you see as much area as the Bing maps implementation in v5. Cheers, Jupaoqq.
All give a like to this comment so Tom can see it for the next time.
For the lag: make sure your browser has hardware acceleration enabled. Also in OBS you can encode/record using the graphics card encoder to free up your CPU (output > advanced, nvenc instead of x264). Recommend updating to the latest OBS, also.
Do you also have the download link for more ram

Nothing like a bit of what you do best!! Reminds me of the spoons series
I've just watched this while sitting about 100yds from the final marker and my initial thought was Sheffield as well. Recognised the shape of the ring road though. Lovely coincidence!
The lag could be the internet speed too, since it's got to load a really high definition large image every single time you get to a new location. I imagine there is some way to cache all the maps locally, but that would take a LOT of really fast storage space. Google maps offline for a small city alone is 300mb, so for a whole country? You're talking about hundreds of GB, maybe TB of SSD storage that would be required.
Mad. Watching from Stourbridge. Was screaming it as soon as it loaded 😂😂
I guessed the Basingstoke one immediately, the new town arrangement gives it away!
The fact I clicked on this just to see if my town was on there, it was, and I firmly said when it showed up, "Well this isn't it" and then it was makes me ashamed on so many levels
The author of the originally planned "CITIES OF 1K" map should be exiled to Vorkuta for the name alone.
10:08 It's actually the South West Trains livery. It has now been succeeded by South Western Railway, and some of it's trains still aren't repainted, merely with the new logo on top of the old one.
A process (aka "task") or processes are eating up your CPU. In order to identify what it is, go to Windows Task Manager and view how much CPU all your tasks are using. Often it is a buggy Windows process itself that misbehaves (for example the notorious Windows Smart Screen process). You can right-click on the offending process/task and click 'End task'. I also wonder whether the plugin that is being used by your Web browser for GeoGuessr isn't perhaps itself misbehaving (perhaps it was not well-made.)
Not using a wireless connection to your router but a cabled one would help you a lot with a more stabili connection and the lag of downloading the maps quicker and more reliable. Best regards
I used to love Merry Hill when I was a kid, but now I understand why my Grandparents refer to it as "Merry Hell".
Try working there 😮💨
@@dgtlrn A real hero
I would check your memory usage using Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) while playing this map. If the memory usage is high I would look into buying more RAM. My hunch is that the full satellite image + recording a vid is a lot for your computer to handle, but having more RAM would fix that.
I got Newcaste before you moved. I saw the football stadium. Great video.
I was hoping for you to check out what the tall buildings all together were about, in Basingstoke.
Tom you aren't missing out much on merry hill lol, it's like an American mall and full of kids and car parks. More choice than bullring tho
*are we recording?*
To diagnose lag, go to the start menu and type in "Resource Manager" or you can do Control-Shift-Escape to bring up Task Manager and then select the Resource Manager tab. You will see a chart for CPU usage, Memory usage, Network usage, and then in another tab you can see Hard Disk usage. Leave this window open in the background when you are doing your normal computer stuff and then if you experience lag, you can switch back to the resource window and if any one of those charts has maxed out to 100% usage in the last few minutes then you can be pretty sure that that resource is the bottleneck, be it CPU, memory, hard disk, or whatever. Good luck!
Shift+Escape opens task manager for the browser, check if something is using a lot of resources.
Ctrl+Shift+Escape opens Windows task manager, check if something is using a lot of resources.
A lot of the times you just need to restart the browser or computer to clear out some old junk from the memory.
To diagnose computer lag: press control+shift+escape. This will open the task manager. Make sure it's in expanded view. From there you can see exactly which part of the computer is working hardest, CPU, Ram or GPU.
From there you can see what program is taking the most percentage of resources and what component is working hardest.
Sometimes windows runs security updates in the background that slow things down. Hard working computer / lag could be anything really but good to learn the tools to diagnose your own rig. If you find some random program that is hogging resources just google the program name and for sure someone has had your exact problem.
Good luck and Godspeed
As someone else has said make sure your web browser uses your graphics card and not your cpu this could prevent lag
because of the lag, it's most likely the website eating all of your RAM. The easiest fix attempt would be to switch browsers, chrome tends to eat a bit more RAM than other browsers. Just another tip in general to make things a bit smoother is to record using your graphics card instead of your cpu (I'm just assuming the graphic card is not too old since it's a brand new pc)
