    I don't think any of us will take a well-stocked JoAnn Fabric store for granted ever again. I remember walking into mine- in Hampton and in Denbigh, and seeing rows of empty shelves. It was so very sad! That shook me more than the great TP/Paper Towel drought. LOL

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад +1

      It was absolutely sobering! I think it was June before I went into the store. I refused to stand in line to go in and by June things were more normal and I could go in like a regular day. But it took months and months for items to come back. I just could not believe it. It's finally getting back to normal, but now they are short of staff and that's delaying their ability to get stock onto the floor. So it will be interesting to see how things go the next couple of months. I'm glad I've been slowly building up my home inventory to keep me busy for the next year.

    I have been buying fabric online thru Facebook sewing groups. I had to buy bobbins from Amazon since nobody else had class 66 bobbins. I do try and support local shops when they have what I need.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад +1

      That's smart! I always have specific needs so color matching winds up being important and I can't do that buying online. And I do so much of my life online, I enjoy shopping in person. Even though Joann is a chain, it still provides jobs and revenue to the local economy. And I would love to shop in the quilt shop here but it's $15 a yard vs $10 and in some cases $4 a yard so I only shop the boutique for a special occasion. But I do understand your point.

      I can see that Robin! This store is pretty new at 3 years now. It replaced the dingy shoebox in the same strip mall. I wish the yarn and fabric sections were larger, but in this market, I guess people prefer the home decor and Cricut supplies versus the DIY sewing and knitting. But I still enjoy the store, and I can easily over spend my budget by a lot every time I'm in if I'm not careful.

    After several visits to the closest Joann's... they have many aisles full of all the non-cotton fabrics, so good for lots of creative sewing, very little quilting cotton, and occasionally good BOGO or B2G1 sales for notions. It's not very busy store, maybe because the access is tricky near a freeway, and also because it's been understaffed for years, so there will be only one person trying to run the whole fabric/needle arts section, and you may wait half an hour to get a cut of fabric. The staff does their best to stay unruffled, but you can feel their frustration.

    Patty, so happy to see you again. Loved your black w/stars fat quarter and prints. Oh, my! Just GORGEOUS! Hey, a couple months ago, found a GREAT JoAnn's 20 miles north of me. Totally worth the drive. Back quarter of the store is yarn galore!. Found gorgeous off-white alpaca mix yarn and crocheted two basket-weave throws for wedding gifts. Beautiful results. Also found fat quarters in lavender and lt blue prints to make raggedy journals covers for granddaughters. Will check out your video on the zippered bags to go with the journals. Also would like to use fat quarter pieces to decorate a pillow case for the girls. Great haul, Pattymac! Love that you are back, and with such enthusiasm! Once I have finished sewing these things, I will buy some material to make pants. I need more pants for the spring and summer. I also plan to make more skirts. My goal is to make one thing a month. I remember last year when it took months for machine needles to come back in! I could not get them anywhere. So I buy a few extras each time I go to the store which is every couple of months, though I might go a bit more frequently now to finish up what I'm doing. I cast on that yarn last night to knit a swatch and I like it so far. I'll definitely make it into a hat for sure. I might knit a few new hats to be honest. I like them the best and they get a lot of wear in the winter.

    Cotton cuts you can order I think its 10 fat quarters for $20 and you can ask what colors you would like if they are available. I get my needles mostly at walmart, way cheaper.What are you going to make with the yarn. I think you will need more of that pretty pink. I love it.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад

      We do not have a very good sewing section in Walmart here. Sewing and quilting is not a huge thing in Virginia Beach, unfortunately. It's so hard to match color and prints online unless you are within a collection. I really need to see things in person if I'm matching something in my stash with something else. The color doesn't always translate perfectly across a screen. And the same color can run warm or cool and if you don't get the right tone it's just not a good combination. One of the challenges of a sewing and quilting hobby. I am going to knit the blue yarn into a hat, and I'm swatching it now. I really like it! The pink is gorgeous!! I'll probably make that into a cowl which is so easy to wear. Thank yoU!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад

      There are many machines that do automatic buttonholes! You should definitely have a machine that will do them. It requires a machine that does the sewing and a specific presser foot. You should do a youtube search on your model of sewing machine and button holes and see what comes up.
      Button holes is a feature on many machines, but I do not know of one that only does button holes.

    Thanks for the tour at Joaan’s, enjoyed it. I was surprised how expensive the sewing machine needles were, I think that’s why the expensive price tag (wow $140). In where I live, I can get sewing machine needles set for $2 on sale and normally $3-4 but I use membership card so it’s 40% off. I also love buying fat quarters especially for quilting and making bags and pouch bags but yeah they add up! On the other hand, I think yardage fabrics looked very economical there. I can’t get ones for $4 per yard in where I live mostly $7-10 for regular quality 100% cotton non-designer ones and I use membership card. I normally visit the US and Europe to get all kinds of stuff in bulk but because of Covid, haven’t travelled for a few years anywhere.. I also knit and crochet as well. @PattymacMakes  3 года назад

      Hi Ellie! Thanks for the great comment! The best fabrics in Joann are in the $7-$12 range, but generally the more expensive product does go on sale regularly. So only buying on sale is important. The machine needles are about $8 a package which seems quite a bit higher than last year, so I have built a good supply in my stash so I don't run out. I'm not sure what the $140 item is you're referring to. I do have several knitting tutorials already in my video archives. If you go to the channel home page and type knitting in the search bar, they will all come up. I would not do any new knitting tutorials, except maybe a general tutorial on making a basic hat. All the stitches and a lot of discussion is already on the channel, so take a look for those!

It’s more money but I never buy China direct (except for my eye glasses because i can’t afford my eye doctor) because it hurts our American economy so much. When I buy online fabric I already know specifically what line and color that I already want. Usually it is Lori holt that I am looking for so I know how to find what each of her fabric looks like.I have priced it in the sewing groups through Facebook are usually cheaper than buying it on Etsy.

      That's a great tip!! I can see how that would work so well, and I'm sure Finding Lori Holt is pretty easy. She's so popular and her products are amazing. Etsy has very high seller's fees so that's why it's more expensive to shop there. It's easy to undercut small shops when people are selling with no fees. I have an etsy shop with a few items, so I've seen the costs go up and up the past few years. I had to drop my line of coffee mugs because I was only making 50 cents on a $25 mug. It wasn't worth it to me anymore. I'm looking at a new seller to make them for me, so I'm hopeful that will be good quality.

      @@sheliagage2227 I would love to sell some fabrics on etsy or on my website at some point, but I don't have have the storage here at home. I will let that wait until the economy settles down because now is not a great time to open a retail outlet. Some people are very successful on etsy, and I have made a little here and there over the years. I focus more on making content than on selling products, but I do need to put some thought and attention into product offerings.

      @PattymacMakes  2 года назад

      Oh my gosh, Annette!! You are reading my mind! I started working on that very topic this week. What I realized is that it's not short and simple.....but I can split up the explanations of the relevant pieces with some examples to demonstrate different concepts. I have been looking at a number of videos on the topic in our subject area of quilting and see that primarily people recommend resources without actually explaining WHY we use them or why it matters. Or how to apply it to fabric selections. I took color theory and design courses in art school, but that was quite a long time ago, so I've been working on my notes to create an understandable explanation for practices to pick color in fabrics. I published this video earlier this week on one way to help in making color choices, so take a look at that if you haven't already. ruclips.net/video/TAGymPTGY2k/видео.html. It's about using your showcase print to make other fabric selections. And let me end this very long winded reply by saying this. Putting the fabrics together is difficult! So it's not your imagination that it's challenging. It's a challenge especially if you're pulling from your stash and working outside of a specific collection. So please have a look at that video to get a start. And thank you so much for asking the question, because it tells me I'm on the right track with putting the videos together.

    It amazes to see quilting cotton at $3.99 per yard. Here in Canada we are paying anywhere from $18 to $22 per meter. (our meter is 3" bigger than a yard"). I think i need to cross border shop again!!!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Год назад +1

      If it makes you feel any better, those cheap prices are long gone. And the $4 cottons, if still available, are pretty terrible quality. Thankfully even our nicer fabrics and still not as expensive as yours, but I would guess by next year that will be a different story. Cotton crops are way, way down and industry is offline in many places where textiles are manufactured. So I think we are going to see a big shakeup in the fabric industry as the year unfolds, but hopefully I'm wrong. If you can cross the border and stock up, now is a good time to do so!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад

      Well, it is still less money than a quilting store, and the quality in Joann is pretty good these days. Unfortunately, prices on fabric are likely to spike out of control due to supply chain issues and the cost of containers on ships ballooning from about $2000 per container to over $30,000 now. Plus the coming inflation will play in. I'm stockpiling myself now so I have plenty of fun choices and project to tide me over for a while since I do believe it's going to become a pretty serious issue in terms of shortages and very high prices next year. The key to Joann is using coupons and/or shopping only on sale, but even then, it is still very expensive. Handmade is not a cheap hobby unless you can buy in the thrift store, but they don't seem to have anything I want. LOL My taste out spends my budget unfortunately.

    I have two Joanns I can go to, both about an hour away! One is in a fancy upscale neighborhood and they cater to that crowd, so everything is very nice. The other one is pretty nice too but you can surely tell the difference! Loved your tour! You talked recently in one of your videos about using the color wheel for fabric. I just received one in the Fat Quarter Shop Sampler box and have no idea to really properly use one. Could you give us a general type tutorial on how to actually use one? That would be awesome!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  2 года назад

      YES!! The neighborhood definitely makes a difference! It's so funny you say that about the color wheel, because I made a video that goes up next week about using one. Color is a complicated subject, so I'll do a series on it and using the wheel over time. But I hope the one coming next week will at least get you started. I see a lot of videos where people show them and talk about them but not so much regarding how to use it in terms of selecting fabrics. So I'm going to approach it from that angle. I thought doing several shorter videos might be the way to go in terms of talking about this topic. As always, be sure to ask question when it goes up and I'll do my best to answer.

If music is playing you'll have to remove the audio and do a voice over when you're editing to describe what you're seeing. Try not to film other people and especially don't include children in your videos. I want to do more of these as there are a few stores I'd like to visit around the area. Thanks for watching!
