- This is a particular favorite rabindra sangeet of mine. The song has been used in the movie Paromitar Ek Din (directed by Aparna Sen) while portraying a deep emotional scene. The song is sung by Jayashree Dasgupta, and Shohini Haldar plays the part of an autistic person (seen here) whose inner self comes into the fore front when she sings.
Also worth mentioning is that Sohini is the daughter of the fiery bengali stage personality Rudraprasad Sengupta of Nandikar, and wife of Gautam Haldar, also part of the same theater group.

These type of rabindrasangeet are called taalchara gaan; thats why they are usually accompanied by tanpura only!
Well.... posting the lyrics mite not be that difficult, but the interpretation will have to be one's own i'm afraid. U see one has to understand the context of the movie/characters along wid the deeper insight that this particular tagore song brings here. I'll try n post strictly a lyrical translation of the meaning n leave it at that.
I think all those who know bengali here will undrestand that it's beyond us to try n translate Tagore in any form, ever. :)

Does anyone know the english translation of anything she is singing?
This is an abstract poem written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in bengali. Even learned scholars of bengal literature can't decipher the true essence of this poem. I am a mere mortal, I can't even begin to understand what he wants to convey. I just tried literal translation of the lyrics.
Translation :
My heart is expressed in the eternal sky
A sad tune resonated in the air,,
This blinding abundance of light.. This is my life story
It returns back into my life and saddens me..
You roam on the outside in various disguise..
I don't know whom you have given the garland which was meant for me..
Today when I see into my self, I see all the garlands are at your neck..
you took everything and then surrendered to all consuming doom.
This story got expressed today ..in the endless sky...
My best guess is this is about a lover who is reminiscing about her love who sort of betrayed her, in some way. But the poem is way too complex and multi-layered for me to distill out the meaning.

First I would like to thank Mr. Srijit Chatterjee for uploading this song. This song is simply beautiful & the sequence of this particular song & the entire film & of course the rendition of this particular song by Madame Jayashree Dasgupta.
Then comes the part explaining the meaning of this song.
I would like to say that both the translations given here are good in their own ways. But they are simply translations and nothing more. They cannot give the right essence of the inner meaning of this song. Actually that is the basic problem of translation and its limitations. A translation can never let anyone get near the actual meaning of the prose or poem or anything because no two language is same. No two culture is same. No two belief system is same. Like for example if we say the word 'Dharma', then it's real meaning is no where near 'Religion'. Dharma is not equal to Religion. They are completely different terms but for the sake of translation these words are interchanged.
Now comes the part of Rabindranath Thakur. For translating his creations, mere translation of words will lead to nothing. His entire creation will be lost in translation. In these translations too, the same thing happened. To understand the deeper meaning of his works, we have to know his beliefs. We have to know his culture, our culture.
I am absolutely in agreement with the fact that each and every one of us has his or her way of understanding this poem. Actually this rule applies to everything. Still I think, to understand and to fathom Rabindranath, we have to understand his belief-system. We may not be entirely successful, but what's the harm in trying!
Rabindranath Thakur's beliefs were deeply rooted in the Vedas & the Vedantas. A huge section of his literary creations are resonance of the Upanishads. So to get a grasp of the inner dimensions of his poems, we have to have somewhat of an idea of the Upanishads. That's entirely my opinion and anybody & everybody has the right to differ.
Like his other poems, this poem too, I understood according to my way of comprehending things. I know I may be completing wrong but that's simply my understanding.
My way will not be as poetic as that of the others who tried to translate the poem, but I would like to share it with you.
Hriday aamaar prakaash holo ananta aakaashe.
Bedon-baanshi uthhlo beje baataashe baataashe
Ei-je aalo-r aakulataa, e-to jaani aamaar kathaa-
Phire eshe aamaar praan-e aamaare udaashe
Baaire tumi naanaa beshe phero naanaa chhale;
Jaanine to aamaar maalaa diyechhi kaar gale..
Aajke dekhi paraan-maajhe, tomaar galae shob maalaa je-
Shob niye shesh dhora dile gabheer sharbanaashe
Hriday aamaar prakaash holo ananta aakaashe - I found me in eternity;
Bedon-baanshi uthhlo beje baataashe baataashe - The sound of melancholia filled the air around;
Ei-je aalo-r aakulataa, e-to jaani aamaar kathaa - This desire for light, I know it's my own;
Phire eshe aamaar praan-e aamaare udaashe - That very desire leads to the consequence of my sadness;
Baaire tumi naanaa beshe phero naanaa chhale - In the mortal world you take many forms;
Jaanine to aamaar maalaa diyechhi kaar gale - I don't know whom I have worshiped;
Aajke dekhi paraan-maajhe, tomaar galae shob maalaa je - Now I see within that you are the one who has taken all my devotion;
Shob niye shesh dhora dile gabheer sharbanaashe - Robbing me from me, now I found you in the labyrinth of loneliness.
My translation is neither poetic nor it is perfect. But this is how I understood this poem.
Ishvar or Brahman or Atman or God or Nature or Shunyata or Universal Intelligence or Simply Nothing, whatever we say, it's the same. Realizing our own-self and our relationship with our creator (if we believe in any or if we don't) is the ultimate goal of every human being. That realization is Nirvana. That state of being makes us face to face with who we are and the real intention of us being here in this world. When we find out who we are, our mind gets filled with joy and sadness at the same time. Joy because we get the answer to our question and come to know the true us. Sadness because we discover that we are absolutely alone. This particular process of realization is very Upanishadic by nature and Rabindranath was a firm believer of that particular theory. Buddha was his ideal.
I won't exaggerate with the philosophical lectures here but I would like to give small examples from the Upanishads to explain why I deduced such an understanding of this particular poem, especially from the first four lines.
prajñānam brahma - "Prajña is Brahman", or "Brahman is Prajña" (Aitareya Upanishad 3.3 of the RgVeda)ayam ātmā brahma - "This Self (Atman) is Brahma" (Mandukya Upanishad 1.2 of the AtharvaVeda)tat tvam asi - "Thou art That" (Chāndogya Upanishad 6.8.7 of the SāmaVeda)aham brahmāsmi - "I am Brahman", or "I am Divine" (Brhadāranyaka Upanishad 1.4.10 of the YajurVeda)Ekam evadvitiyam brahma - Brahman is one, without a second (Chāndogya Upanishad)So 'ham - He am I (Isha Upanishad)Sarvam khalvidam brahma - All of this is Brahman (Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.14.1)
So from these I concluded is that when Rabindranath says "Hriday aamaar prakaash holo ananta aakaashe", this 'ananta aakaash' is not just the eternal sky, but it is eternity itself. Then the rest follows. When we discover ourselves in the midst of eternity and we find out that I am the only ONE. Then we realize how lonely we all are. We have nobody. We only have our own company. We become overjoyed to discover our-self but at the same time we become saddened by the melancholia.Rabindranath was devotional by nature. The amount of his devotional poems can definitely define his form of devotion towards the Creator. So, when he says "Baaire tumi naanaa beshe phero naanaa chhale", he may have meant that in this mortal world all the manifestations that we observe are of our Creator's. Everything is Him. Therefore Rabindranath is actually not sure which form he had selected for his worship. But this is only a poetic dilemma. These words are said to be humble. Then when he sees the mirror, the mirror of his inner-self, he sees that he has devoted his entirety to his Creator. The last line of the poem is simply amazing. The reflection that he sees in the mirror is his own, because he is the Only One. He is one with his Creator. All the garlands are actually donning on him. That makes him again realize that how lonely we all are. That's the cause of eternal damnation in the labyrinth of melancholia. Ultimately we are all doomed in that island of eternity where we all are lone residents.
It's virtually impossible to translate. And no RUclips commenter here can do that properly.

read about the discussions on toppas and bhajans...and how this is not a bhajan and a toppa subclass with it's pakistani routes...is thumri very different from this? if so could any one tell me how?
