I tried the game with my group recently, and everyone felt in love with the system (we had the opportunity to play 3 scenarios yet : one from the core rule book, one from a Free RPG Day module and a scenario from their living campaign). I plan to DM a STA campaign in parallel with our D&D sessions, because the game should work really well with an "episodic" format (so we can play a one shot when a player is missing from our main campaign). The pros of the system are, in my opinion :
    - The character creation : you have to think about your character's life before Starfleet and about his/her education/family etc... So it forces the players to have a story to begin with, with which the DM can play around.
    - The PCs are experts : there is very few progression for the characters, but they are very capable, and they should succeed almost everything they try, except for extremely difficult tasks. But the challenge often comes with time limitations, and the PCs have to act on the spot or must work with complications.
    - The system offers a lot of tools for the PCs to work with : team work, momentum, doom etc... The DM has to tell them the difficulty of the actions they want to attempt (because, as experts, they know how to evaluate the difficulty of a task), and the players then have to choose how they want to employ ressources to improve their results.
    - The system offers some tools for the players to participate in the narration : everyone can use momentum and/or doom to create/negate an advantage or a complication.
    - The combat system is very lethal and easy to understand, and the players are encouraged to find other solutions than direct confrontation.
    - The books are gorgeous and filled with usefull information (at least the ones that are translated in french when I write this).
On the other hand, the cons are :
    - You have to use memos to remember what actions you can take or what you can do with momentum/doom, at least when you begin with the system, because there is a lot of choice.
    - I haven't try a space combat yet, but it doesn't seems very intuitive for me right now (it plays like a normal combat, but ships doesn't behave exactly like characters).
If you are a fan of Star Trek, I think you might enjoy the game.

I've recently rediscovered ttrpg's. I'm knee deep in a solo Ironsworn adventure, at the moment. One thing I've noticed over the last couple of months of absorbing what's been going on in the community over the last 20 years is the amount of Canadians involved with it on RUclips. It's pretty cool. Bonjour de Montréal.

Yeah Modiphuis system is quite versatile, it's a grower. It's quite like the FF Star Wars system without the funny dice. Can be quite narrative. I will say there's a bit of option paralysis after a while with the momentum and doom flux and expenditure. The constant need to think of ways to spend them can get tiring after a few beers and man thirsts for a simply d20/armour class mechanic.

Congratulations on getting a deal on it. I've heard very good things about the system, has been a struggle to not succumb to buying the game :)

When I saw you had this I had to look it up on Amazon. Ordered it for US$25, plus tax, and it should be here tomorrow. Glad to see your quick unboxing. (As a fan from the original series I really felt the need to have a Trek game!) The only potential problem I can see is all that black ink. But we shall see.
Edit: Got it and I'm rather disappointed. Haven't looked through the adventures yet, but the rules booklet doesn't actually tell you how to make a character. I've figured out how to do stats (56 points divided between the six stats, with none being lower than 7 and none higher than 12), but everything else is a mystery.

I went straight to the core rule book and bypassed the starter box.

I was wondering if it's an update of the old FASA game like the FASA BattleTech game was taken over by a new company

Nope. New system, basis of several Modiphius games (Conan the Barbarian, John Carter of Mars etc)

I've been a Star Trek fan since the early 80's and have just about everything FASA published for their Star Trek RPG line. I was pumped when STA came out and have run several short campaigns. In the end, I've decided the system is not for me, at least from a GM perspective. RPGs that have game mechanics designed to directly affect the story or outcome of encounters (The Momentum / Threat mechanic) aren't my cup of tea. Also, I found the starship combat rules to be way too bloated, especially with more than two ships involved. I had to write my own simplified starship combat rules. That said, the books and accessories are excellent from a production perspective. All of their products have original color artwork - no still photos to be seen anywhere! So, they're pretty cool books for a Star Trek fan even if you don't play the game, IMO.
