I had a feeling today’s Haugenism would be special. Not disappointed! An acting teacher said it’s important to introduce a foreign accent discreetly so that the audience can get accustomed to it, then thicken it as you develop the character. Maybe this is the same process as holding back the secret chord until you’ve established the musical environment.
I can’t rave loudly and enthusiastically enough about Eric Haugen’s lessons on all platforms where his lessons can be found. Here, his website, Patreon, TrueFire, and so on - whenever I spend a little time with Eric’s work, I get so much out of it. Truly a special teacher. This lesson is no exception. Every time a new Eric video is posted, my immediate response is, "Ooooo, this is going to be good," and that reaction is always justified. Eric, your reminders and tips regarding staying calm and centered when learning, practicing, and performing have been put to real practical use of late. I’m currently enrolled in two courses via Berklee Online, and each class has weekly assignments that have to be recorded (video + audio) and submitted for grading. (Side Note: in addition to acquiring skills and knowledge, that kind of required discipline is a huge reason why I signed up for the courses - so beneficial!) Like many musicians, especially early-stage learners like me (in Year 3 of my own humble stumbling bumbling journey), I get super-nervous once the camera and audio recorder are on, so - not exaggerating or making this up - I hear your voice telling me to breath, relax the shoulders, arms, and hands, and I swear it works. Thank you, Jedi, from this Padawan!
Friday nights I slide into my weekend with guitar videos. Demos, discussions, lessons… but I always save Eric Haugen Guitar for last. I always know it will be good, I know I’ll feel good after it, and I’ll feel better about me. A person couldn’t ask for more as a way to start a weekend, and thank you so much for making that possible again today. Much peace and kindness to you. ✌️😌🎸
Chances Are I won't play guitar anymore due to old age and Carpal tunnel surgery in both hands. Chances Are that I won't ever see properly out of my right eye due to a surgery complication. However, my hearing is still in tact and I sit hear listening to your song "Chances Are" off of your new album "Bundle Up" I am so very grateful to you for writing this masterpiece. "Take it easy now slow runner" sent chills down my spine. What a great and poignant lyric. BEAUTIFUL. Kevin O'Rourke
Thanks so much Kevin! The slow runner is all of us! Hey what about slide guitar - that's always an option if your hands aren't as nimble as they used to be!
Eric, thankyou so much for these lessons. I’ve been learning from tabs or sheet music for 30 years without understanding how it all works. Your focus is on the student and that is a gift to people like me. Being kind to myself and eating pizza…😀🎸
Hey Eric...loving the Haugenicty on this (and the whole series). Want to thank you as today I wrote a fresh song combining this video, your views on having a creative objective, and the general vibe of being in your world. Felt great and sounded more like what I want to sound like. Huge thanks from the UK
Thanks so much Eric, that was an exceptional video. I can still remember when I first heard that 'Layla' chord. Those musical 'surprises' can be pretty powerful composition tools.
Beautiful man. I got hints of Zeppelin’s “the rain song” in that G major w/minor IV chord section. Van Halen’s “Panama” is one of my favorite examples of the flat 7-based chords in a major key. Thanks a lot!
Eddie doesn't get the credit he deserves for being such a great WRITER! To me, that's the thing that really sets him apart from all the shredders he inspired!
This is great! Giant 10,000 Watt light bulb, realizing I like *all* these songs with these borrowed chords. Another great one: Alison (Elvis Costello), key of E, but the D sneaks in and makes the progression!
I knew about the flat 7 chord but just recently discovered the flat 6. Pleasantly surprised to find an example on Motley Cure’s Home Sweet Home 😁 I love theory, but theory with application examples is so accessible and tasty 😋 Thx for another great vid!
Really useful, but I'm missing some of the connection with the 'parallel modes' and how that works. It's one of those 'I kinda get it (but really I don't)' things with me. Very cool though (that bit I get). Lost in 'Chances Are', I love that tune, man.
Fascinating how 12 tones can be infinitely manipulated. I have been using the simpler food rhythms to play over the grooves on the TrueFire course with appropriate triads and pentatonic notes. Very helpful to stay in time. I wonder if you ever met Tomo at Berkeley? Ever thought about building a site like his Guitar Wisdom site? Thanks for posting this video.
Be careful! Most speakers won't fit in the back! Only celestion-type speaker baskets will fit. Aaaaand honestly the DT-10 is nice, but not significantly better than the stock speaker!
Love the album Éric. Very inspiring. Are you a fan of Gaz Coombes? I love his solo albums and to me he is a benchmark of songwriting and production for people who record at home ( he has some very good gear though).
@@EricHaugenGuitar On the track “Deep Pockets” there are some Fripp style guitars , maybe you could do a video on how to get that sound? I think they do it be reversing a track with reverb on it. Anyhow, I think you will like him and the good news he has a new album dropping soon.
Yeah it's on there! You just gotta scroll down the main page until you get to the tabs - it has the same title: "Add Minor Key Darkness to Major Progressions"
Love the lessons...I watch you every week, but.... Your volume is way lower than other videos and when the next one autoplayed my dog got scared and peed in the floor. I hold this against you, Eric Haugen.

Best guitar instruction on RUclips. I also bought your ‘Caged’ master class and I highly recommended it. Brilliant
Yay! I’m glad it’s working for you!
I just found you and m learning that theory is so easy when taught like this. This concept finally clicked after 20 tears….

It’s true - learning just by numbers is great up to a point. Then, it really pays to learn SOME theory!
As ever only have to listen for twenty seconds and Eric is 100% on it ! Woa
Thanks Chris!

@superreality that’s vey cool and I would love to hear your song. These video lessons give

Very cool sounding 🎸. So pretty sounding.

That minor progression reminds me of Aurora's "Warrior". Just beautiful. Congratulations on your newest album, Eric.

Thanks so much Scott!
Hey man, just want to tell you this....You are a blessing to the guitar community. Learnt so much from you!! Thanks a lot for what you do!
Thanks so much Azareal!
You realize we need a Haugenized version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” now, right? Great video, as always!
It’s so tempting to do! Maybe next holiday season!
Hey man! Nice album! Congratulations!
Thanks so much Ricardo!
My favourite flat 7 is No Rain by Blind Melon. Classic.
Oh hell yeah

Eric, my Friday's are better for having you. The new album is badass too. 👑
Thanks so much Patrick!

Just got the new record Eric, Sounds great man
Thanks so much man!
I really like the way the vocals are sitting in the mix , it’s very cool
Each song has so many cool sounds going on, nice touch with the birds 🤙🏼

Oh yeah!
Who would've thought "Lola" and "Home Sweet Home" share chordal DNA!
Thanks, Eric
Another great lesson.
Great videos Eric! Enjoy your style....I hope I teach in a similar way!
Just discovered you today, you've got a new subscriber.
Yay! Welcome my buddy!
Thanks Eric you've massively improved my song writing but now I eat far too much pizza
Excellent
A modern classic, “The Power Of The 5 Minor” by Tom Bukovac.
The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin lives within All I Want For Christmas Is You? The progression and style it was played took me right to LZ.
Abm7b5 is usually a bad plot twist ;) Another hip take on music theory! - I mean modal subversions and songwriting
Duders I am Ralph Wiggum to your Carl Sagan when it comes to this stuff.
just great

“chances” is my most Neil Young On The Beach attempt!
Just listening to your new album on Spotify - love it. Guitars remind me of Johnny Marr - but better :)
Thanks so much man!
There's plenty of jangle on there - my dano 12 got used ALOT!
Bruce Katz 👍 Ronnie Earl.

Tomo is so nice! I never got to study with him at Berklee but we comment on each other’s vids now 🤠🤠
@@EricHaugenGuitar yeah, he focuses a lot on being kind and kind to yourself. I subscribe to a lot of videos, both you guys are at the top of my list!
Another banger!
That's one perty guitar.
another great lesson Eric. quick gear question - I note you have a weber d10 in the vibrochamp - did you try others or is the a first choice upgrade?
Be careful! Most speakers won't fit in the back!
Only celestion-type speaker baskets will fit.

b7 chord, b6chord, min4 chord
Eric did you by chance tab out that layla part at the beginning of the video? i cant find it on your patreon.
Yeah it's on there! You just gotta scroll down the main page until you get to the tabs - it has the same title: "Add Minor Key Darkness to Major Progressions"
Would Radiohead's Creep fall in to this bracket? The four chord C changes from major to minor? Always wondered how that worked theory wise...
Yeah! Radiohead do this sort of thing all the time!
When you substitute a chord, does it change how you solo over it?
It certainly can! I didn't send you a Kingsley pedal by chance a couple months ago?
@@joshphillips9033 unfortunately you didn't
Absolutely it does! That's where knowing CAGED shapes and pentatonics comes in especially handy!
Can't eat pizza. Need to lose some weight.
Loving the new album. Modernizing the 60's/70's sound.
Thanks brother!
That’s the idea - I LOVE the classic stuff, but always try to surprise myself and push things into the edges
@@EricHaugenGuitar And the sweet, sweet tone. You sure know how to set up a crazy good sounding overdrive.
What was the song in the intro? I know its a really famous song but I just can't remember the name.
Layla
Specifically the ending of the album version of Layla
Wtf guitar is that 💥🤯 to sick looking
I always list all my gadgets in the description box brother!
That’s an early 2000s epiphone firebird vii - so coooool 😎
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks just started following definitely can hear it's tone shine.
"Defies theory". You wouldn't believe how many songs I would transcribe to use major chords because we didn't know any better... 40 years ago...
Would Led Zeppelin's The Rain Song be an example of this idea?
Oh yeah 💯!
Jimmy page doesn’t get the credit he deserves for being a chord weirdo!
I’m behind about three videos. I’ve let you down
HOW DARE YOU!!!
Fun fact - when you put a IV minor chord into a major progression you get sued by Radiohead
People think Neil Young is sloppy? And stupid?? Who are they, I want names
