SUDDEN DEATH (1995) Review - Basically, It's Insane.

  • Jean-Claude Van Damme's 1995 Die Hard in a Hockey Arena movie Sudden Death, is possibly one of his greatest movies ever... or at least the most insane. From a scenery-devouring Powers Booth threatening to put spiders in a little girl's mouth to Van Damme fighting Iceburgh, the Pittsburgh Penguins mascot, Sudden Death has something for... well, maybe not everyone, but people who enjoy ridiculous, over-the-top 80s action movie that were made far past the expiration date of these types of movies. Sudden Death co-stars Pittsburgh hockey legends Mike Lange, Iceburgh, and Luc Robitaille.

Nice review! Hoping you do some more classic action movie reviews. I'm sure i saw this in the theater and probably never again, only because this one came out long after my prime 80s/early 90s action movie watching days, but i was a huge JCVD fan. True story: very early on when i was dating my wife i mentioned Van Damme she said "Im all ears" and used her hands to symbol an ear necklace (from universal soldier of course) and my mouth dropped... it was then she confessed that she was a huge van damme fan growing up! Needless to say i married her the next day (jk).

Haha, this is an amazing story of true love. Who knew Van Damme brings people together in meaningful ways! I'm happy to talk about more classic action movies, especially now that I can kinda, sorta see the end of the Arnold series (even though there are like 10 more movies to go). Thanks for watching and commenting as always!

I just watched this movie again on DVD. I watched it in the 90s as well when I was just a kid, and I've watched it maybe ten times in between. It's a classic for me.

The entire scene when McCord picks up his kids at their mothers house caught my eye this time around. The way they shot it with the city as the backdrop is a fantastic visual treat, they captured the background so well in my opinion.
I went to IMDb and checked if the street is mentioned in the filming locations and lo and behold it is! The street is 1016 Fritz Street and Google Earth Pro's street view was there to capture the street just last year in April. It still looks almost as it does in the movie, just a few more trees. I believe the house has been torn down and it's just a foundation there now.
You can still see that gorgeous backdrop of the city in the background.
I wonder how the heck they scouted and found that particular street.

That’s awesome! Inspired by this, I looked up the Location Managers, and was curious whether they had any overlap with Striking Distance (1993) which was also shot in Pittsburgh. Sure enough, Steve Parys was a location Manager on Striking Distance AND Sudden Death. He clearly knew the city pretty well!

The chef andrew was actually 64/65 years old during filming. He died 11 months before the film was released

Yep, Audrey Lindley (who played his wife) was in her late 70s and passed a couple years later after turning in another brilliant big part in The Relic in ‘97. The 90s were definitely a different era.

10:55🥶😵 18:00🤔 I Wish my Cleveland Lumberjacks could’ve gotten this treatment! That’s a really cool connection you have to the arena! But I want you to know, I Never Moved. Not when the video ended and everybody left! I Never Moved!😢😉👏 Always A Blast Sir!

Thank you! You’ll be happy to know the Lumberjacks filled in for the Blackhawks in this movie! Well, for a minute. The footage didn’t look intense enough so they shot it again using ECHL teams. Crazy!

Lethal Weapon 3 has a fight scene on the ice of the Forum during a fake Kings game. Fake players. Fake jerseys. But I was so happy to see it on the big screen, it didn’t matter. I loved it!
You being a Pens fan, I totally understand any unconditional love you may have for this ridiculous movie.

Haha amazing. I love seeing fake players, like in Major League. Or even the reverse - real players on fake teams, like Hines Ward in The Dark Knight Rises!

This was arguably Van Dame’s best acting performance apart from Time Cop, he really sold the sarcastic Bruce Willis with a martial arts background well. There were several factors working against this movie, the biggest one being it came out 6 months after Die Hard 3, which was an impossible act to follow.

Oh, and now that I think of it, anybody else wondering if maybe that over the top penguin mascot fight inspired the giant chicken fights in Family Guy?

Well, speaking of Sudden Death, I remember Van Damme appeared on local news (Argentina) saying "Muerte Súbita!" Many times while he was being interviewed. Lol, during those years anyone could promote their stuff with the peso being equal to a dollar. 😂

This is the last Van Damme l actually liked. Hard Target was the only Van Damme movie I saw in the theater(not counting Expendables 2)when I was 11 years old lol. I remember enjoying most of his films leading up to Sudden Death. After that I didn't really like any of his theatrical movies. Once his films started going dtv. I lost interest in Van Damme career. Much like I did Nicholas Cage career.

    • @NerdWithWords

Yeah, it seems like he hit his ceiling with Timecop. He never quite crossed over to a wider demographic the way Arnold or Sly did. Come to think of it, I didn’t see many Van Damme movies in theaters. I was too young to see Bloodsport or Kickboxer in theaters, and by the time he was doing stuff like Double Team, I was out. He was a VHS king though.

I think what hurt this movie was JCVD. Not because he's a bad actor, nor action star. The role was wrong for him. He is a MARTIAL ARTS ACTION ACTOR. In this action flick he plays an ordinary fireman, with no martial arts reference (like in the movie "No Where to Run"). The role of Darren McCord would have gone better with Bruce Willis, Brian Bosworth, Roddy Piper, Kurt Russell, or another big name action start with no Martial Arts reference.

    • @NerdWithWords
      @NerdWithWords  Год назад

His martial arts background is certainly bizarre for a Pittsburgh fireman. Hard to accept Van Damme as an Everyman, but it does it make it a lot funnier than the options you mentioned!
