John Deere 425, 445, and 455 compared: What are the differences?

  • I happened to have all three of the popular John Deere "4x5" series garden tractors lined up, so I figured I'd take a minute to go over some of the most obvious differences. Each is still a very capable machine, and it's hard to choose a favorite. What's your favorite model?

    The 445 and 455 originally came with small tires too, but Deere later gave them the biggies. Also early on, the couplers didn't always come with the 445 and 455, they had to be optioned. One other difference with the 425 versus the others is the others come with a 18hp PTO, whereas the 425 has a 16hp, that is a bit of hearsay from the forums, I haven't locked down Deere literature on that quote yet, but it stands to reason since the 20hp can struggle at times. Great video and side by side comparison opportunity. I think what would have made this video truly completet Luke is if you could have sourced a 415🤣.

      That's right. I forgot about the 92 models having the small tires. And Timothy told me to mention the 415, but it's unlikely I'd find one. I actually saw one sell on ebay in this country a few months ago, and I bid pretty high on it. I think it sold locally because the auction never ended. Maybe someday I'll come across one... Thanks for watching!

    I have two 445s, one is all wheel steer and the other one isn't. The fuel injection alone is a reason to have it over the 425. Great tractors

      Do the wider dish 2 wheel steer tires fit on the all wheel steer model? Or can you flip the aws wheels around?

    • @LukesJohnDeereGarage

      I don’t think you can fit the regular wheels on the rear a fan AWS model. You might be able to flip them around but they would be super wide- they have a lot of offset- at least on mine.

    I had a 1995 455 for over 10 years till I gave it to my godson…I loved it dearly and I had replaced it with a semi commercial 400 series Kubota zero turn which was much faster in mowing but much less enjoyable operating…I missed my 455 so much I sold my new zero turn and bought an x495 with the bigger 1.1L Yanmar!..and to be honest, mowing with it for the first time was like meeting an old friend after a long time away from each other!..the x495 is an amazing tractor and I would say it’s noticeably more powerful than the 455…these series of tractors will always be the top of the line tractor in this category which no other manufacturer makes anymore so they are effectively in a class all their own!..I hope JD never stops making them!..

      The X495 is one of my favorites. Much more comfortable than the older 4X5 series, quieter, and plenty of power to spare. The only zero turn that is as fun to mow with as a diesel garden tractor is a diesel zero return in my opinion. 🤣 That’s why I got the John Deere 997.

      There’s a lever under the fender by the right rear tire that you pull down on. And make sure the brake isn’t locked. Then it should roll.

    • @LukesJohnDeereGarage

      Thanks! To put a ballast box on a 300 series, you'll need a 3 point hitch. I'd get the one from Ruegg. www.rueggmfg.com/hitchkits.php Do you already have a ballast box?

    • @LukesJohnDeereGarage
      @LukesJohnDeereGarage  2 года назад +3

      What you want is a rear weight bar then, not a ballast box. Start by loading your rear tires and getting at least one set of rear wheel weights. Then get a weight bar for the back of your tractor to put on I would say a minimum of four suitcase weights.
