I have watched 2 eps and completely loved the style. Critics may have been used to the whole "every episode intrigue" like something shocking has to happen. But the pacing for Sugar captures the essence of like 1940's detective story which is perfect. Sadly those critics don't understand that.
Yes I agree with everything you said.. Love the humanity in John .. so different than the usual macho stuff. And the lovely locations. I’m one with John sugar!!.. slickly made well written I hope it s a season 2 please!., my watch list for the next few weeks..
I'm glad you agree! Unfortunately, I think Apple may have dropped the ball on advertising again because I don't think this show is getting the attention it deserves.
I liked your review! I am a massive Colin Farrell fan so I was looking forward to this unfortunately the supporting cast are not that strong as you said. I will stick with it for now and see where it goes. Watching from the U.K!
I love this series. My biggest problem with it is that I have to wait for the next episode. I can't binge it. The plot is a trope, but it is a trope I love. A girl that is missing or dead but the detective is falling for her as he solves the case. I.e. Laura.
I haven't watched the office but knew amy ryan from gone baby gone. She was nominated for an oscar for her role. I love theovie. You should give it a try.
great show, with some new and fresh interpretations of older storytelling tricks, exposition and weaving of various facets and nuances to the story but...the sci-fi is bland but more so out of place, at least to me, it had no business being there. it's like putting sugar in a fine wine with a complex character.
I’ve been looking forward to this, a big fan of Collin Farrel… love how they modernized the noir style, cinematography was great… feels like sin city meets true detective…. But I agree, the supporting actors are not that strong. Thanks for covering this series. I’ll be watching.
Agreed - loved the 1st two episodes and john sugar is mersmerising - inetresting camera work and choice of background music - it just elevates the whole viewing exp - I think I found something unique in this genre after long time .
I’ll give it a shot just because of this review. I’m hesitant towards most Apple shows. I loved Constellation for the sci-fi mystery aspect. I enjoyed Servant for the same reason, but over all I think Apple shows generally get a pass from me. (Apple, as a company, I have difficulty getting behind; he types on his iPhone) Love your content, keep it coming.
I was looking for a review of this show & yours is the only one I found! I watched the first two episodes & will continue. I don't know why so many critics really didn't like it, haven't read them. I have grown as a Colin Farrell fan starting with "In Bruges". I agree with all you said. Hopefully, other characters will be more fleshed out. I feel James Cromwell talents are kind of wasted, nothing like his character in, "LA Confidential". This series although the characters are not much alike remind me of "Ray Donovan". Although it's supporting characters were much stronger, but it had time to develop. I was taken as well with the B & W in the beginning & am glad creators are using it more, just as in another new version & crime series "Ripley". Keep up the good work, I just subscribed!
Watching this after your video about starting a review channel. I understand if it’s not your style, but I guarantee if you want more people to watch your channel / reviews you need a quick theme song intro. You have a great channel name and logo. From what I watched from your video your info / edit is solid, but you don’t have a hook. Background music is good 👍. Add a fun introduction to your reviews and the views will blow up. Same with recap vids etc. it’s just a branding thing. Everything else is great. 👍 Watch Dan Murrel, or Adam does movies as well.
Thanks man. I just rebranded then lost my job, got a new job, and started going back to school. All that paired with the fact that I’m raising 3 kids means YT is unfortunately on the back burner. But I have every intention of picking it back up as soon as I can make it work!
I loved Sugar, Colin Farral was superb, classy and personally, I thought the role is one of his best. I'm a Noir fan and asides from the "twist" felt that this show had been made for me. Roll on season 2.
Agreed 👍🏻 most people hating on it truly don’t get noir the critic from indie wire & the guardian were clearly ridiculous and just I feel didn’t get it and missed the point great job on your video
This show, based on those first 2 episodes, can become my favorite show of 2024 easy.. critics? Who cares about them.. John Sugar is great caracter, good at what hes doing, calm and collected, good heart, does not want, but its capable to hurt people.. its great, just great. The actor, the story so far, the style - 9.5/10 for me!
Progressive, female, feminist, yada yada. Moviephile. I have stopped trusting critics because often times they prefer to have “complex” shows that ultimately don’t make sense and blend reality with dimensions and mind games. It’s ultimately about how to create the next Memento. Problem with that is that eventually the originality of Memento, and similar stories ultimately becomes the norm and the stale and old that most critics find make us nostalgic. Not every show is going to be game of thrones, not every show is going to be the killing, not every show is meant to be the first of its genre or ground breaking. Some shows are about the visuals and dialogue; creating an atmosphere and world you’d like to be a part of. And that’s enough. I think the show is well acted, executed, with a crisp and interesting storyline. It’s not a shutter island or memento thus far. And if it is, it’s playing it different to the rest. It’s just a noir style show which we’ve missed. Thus far I like it. Watching it with my partner and he too likes it as well.
While Colin Farrell has been in some great work, you won't find him any better than in Apple+ Original Series "Sugar"! He plays a Dective from another peace-loving planet who are here on Earth to do one mission; "Observe and Report", while the Group of them carries on their natural selected work duties as a 'cover', their true purpose is to Observe and Report. This Genius and unique Series is in a Genre of its own making, theres no other TV Seeies, Movie or even book anything like it. RT wrote that they "fell in love with Colin Farrells character Immediately and Irresistibly". His Irish, boyish charm, love for animals, empathy and compassion for Humans in despair bleed through the screen. Sugar imagines seeing the back of his dead, younger sister Djen from the back in a long, black dress (Djen, pronounced "Jen", freakishly looks just like the young mussing woman he's searching for, Olivia). Sugar watches his imagined dead sister Djen going into the loo. He follows her to the closed door when Sugars Best Friend, Henry arrives to the party, when the bathroom door opens theres a long haired man with a beard. Toward the late middle of Epi. 7, Henry tells Sugar That he thinks he is going to be lost since his sister died ~ Sugar thinks about it, knowing Henrey is right.🌚✌️
I like this show, I like the old movie clips. Only downside is having to include an obligatory black lesbian for no apparent reason other than she a black lesbian.
Am I the only one who thinks it started so slow???? I wanted to like it. I finished it. It just wasn't for me. Out of a 5 star rating, I would give it a 3.
Paced detective story. I was intrigued by the hook: Who IS John Sugar. The online speculations were fun. But BAM E6 knocked out sox off (hubs and me). We loved it. On the rewatch we said, damn we should have caught that detail or that one or… The ending was bittersweet: Surely they’ll have to make a S2! Where’s Henry?! What’s he done with Djen? How will Sugar adjust to his new life with “them” hunting him down? The 1/2 hour segments left us hanging, waiting painfully for a whole week to see what’s next. Performances were all good but man, Colin Farrell is gold. The soft speaking sleuth asking a bad guy if he doesn’t want to settled things peacefully. 😅 There are big hitters here in producers and directors. I will sob my heart out if the cancel a S2!

I think most of them were fine with the show until the end. So, we’ll have to wait and see!
Then it was all ruined by the alien reveal.
Because they’re infantile….
Who cares what the RT guys think? They just write for each other, not an audience.
I’ve been so into this show and no one around me has seen it 😭 so happy to find a channel nerding out about it too!
It’s a shame how so many apple shows fall into this category. Lol
People tend to wait until the full show is released rather than having to wait ages for the full show to be available to watch it.
Myself included.
Yes I agree with everything you said.. Love the humanity in John .. so different than the usual macho stuff. And the lovely locations. I’m one with John sugar!!.. slickly made well written I hope it s a season 2 please!., my watch list for the next few weeks..
I'm glad you agree! Unfortunately, I think Apple may have dropped the ball on advertising again because I don't think this show is getting the attention it deserves.
loving it so far, i love the old movie scenes they show in it and and that john sugar is a movie buff
Yeah, I’m really enjoying it too! 😊
I liked your review! I am a massive Colin Farrell fan so I was looking forward to this unfortunately the supporting cast are not that strong as you said. I will stick with it for now and see where it goes. Watching from the U.K!
Yeah, I’m hopeful that this will be good in the end.
Thanks for being here!

Apple problem. I binged first three episodes and I was there going. I need a ticket to LA. lol
I haven't watched the office but knew amy ryan from gone baby gone. She was nominated for an oscar for her role. I love theovie. You should give it a try.
3:52 - You missed 'Dream On' from the 90's, about a guy who watched a lot of old TV as a kid & reminded of scenes whenever something happens to him.
great show, with some new and fresh interpretations of older storytelling tricks, exposition and weaving of various facets and nuances to the story but...the sci-fi is bland but more so out of place, at least to me, it had no business being there. it's like putting sugar in a fine wine with a complex character.

Awesome! Glad you’re here!
Sin City meets true detective is a great comparison!
It's all right, I don't think it's Farrell's thing personally. He is just not all that believable of a super nice guy, it's like it's forced
Original af. Idk, man, Every Apple tv production ive watched so far, has been PRETTY good
Its a modern take on Phillip Marlowe, the character created by Raymond Chandler. In fact the plot is very similar to The Big Sleep.
Agreed - loved the 1st two episodes and john sugar is mersmerising - inetresting camera work and choice of background music - it just elevates the whole viewing exp - I think I found something unique in this genre after long time .
Yes! The production quality is just so stinking gooooooood
I’ll give it a shot just because of this review.

You only watched 2 episodes before making an evaluation? 😮

Also, at the beginning say “Welcome to TheorySmack’ I’m your host etc.” You’ve got a great channel name, you just need to plug it.

All that paired with the fact that I’m raising 3 kids means YT is unfortunately on the back burner. But I have every intention of picking it back up as soon as I can make it work!
Amy Ryan was a standout in Gone Baby Gone and first notable role was in The Wire.
Underrated actress
I loved Sugar, Colin Farral was superb, classy and personally, I thought the role is one of his best. I'm a Noir fan and asides from the "twist" felt that this show had been made for me. Roll on season 2.
Hoping it’ll reach the no 1 spot

Yeah, I think you’re right.
Really hoping this thing can remain strong to the end!
Or they just don’t like them being aliens out of the blue.
6:08 - For me, most good shows never completed their 1st season... So no critic could help them.
Simply put after binge watching 4 episodes back to back: this show is really a good show.
You’ve got it!
This show, based on those first 2 episodes, can become my favorite show of 2024 easy.. critics? Who cares about them.. While I agree it’s off to a strong start, we should probably hold off on ratings until the end! 😝
@@TheorySmack Bravo for that! Making judgements on whole series after 2 half hour episodes?! Wth
I just started watching this series
Please get us every series review like this❤
I’ll do my best!

I think this is a better fit for him vs penguin 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ can’t wait to see the ending hope it gets renewed for season two
Idk why but I’m getting Ray Donovan vibes
Yeah I can see that
Stick with it, there is more underneath the surface of John Sugar than you know.
Will you be watching Sugar?
At least the first two eps...
Yes Colin is a great actor looking forward to this show and Penguin this fall
@@lenapersson7450 Cannot WAIT for Penguin!
I will watch i like him

I loved the pacing, personally
I will watch it just because it has a sense of thriller into it. Im not a drama type of guy. In fact, I hate that.
Vecna doesn’t seem like someone who would be into drama. So, I get it.
I love it
Wait. The show starting already.
Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh!
Comes out on Friday!
I hate reviews of series from people who see only 1 or 2 episodes. Just wait for the end and then give your opinion.
I wasn’t allowed to comment on the whole series at the time of this video because of restrictions by Apple
It has Lynchian vibes
Without any threat dread or darkness.
First 2 episodes boooooiring😢
Noooooo 😔
Was a great show till that really stupid reveal, wtf were they thinking!?
I didn’t mind it personally
I loved the show. Then when there were signs it was about intergalactic aliens... come on. That killed the show for me.
Loved it.
I was thinking the same thing, most ridiculous reveal ever.
And I loooved that! Up till E6 it was a good, though slow pa 1:37
Paced detective story. I was intrigued by the hook: Who IS John Sugar. The online speculations were fun. But BAM E6 knocked out sox off (hubs and me). We loved it. On the rewatch we said, damn we should have caught that detail or that one or…
